  38. I’m actually getting very tired of working in XML while I agree it is a great document format I now question whether it is the best approach to a Turing Complete Markup Language. I agree it needs to be designed so it can transform into XML. I’m not sure if I’m thinking about this for 3.5 or 4 yet but this the basic idea I just ran by Anders in an li request:

  107. Jason, if having an ID associated with every element is a key feature of machine-readability per se, perhaps I should update my Wikipedia article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine-Readable_Documents
  108.
  109. I don’t see any reference to element IDs at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine-readable_data either.
  110.
  111. I do understand that associating GUIDs or UUIDs with each element make them more directly referenceable -- like this – and I can see how that can be useful for other elements in the StratML schema. However, respecting the KISS principle, it seems to me we should leave those use cases to apps and services like yours and Chris’ before trying to incorporate them into the standard itself.
  112.
  113. Also, unless and until we have the means to test usage of the stratml:Relationship elements to build out the value chain in StratML Part 2, I don’t think we’ll be able to fully understand those capabilities and, thus, what more might be required.

  136. Actions can be documented in StratML Part 2 as <PerformanceIndicator>s of the Input_Processing and Output_Processing types in the value chain. I have little doubt that Chris’ app may provide additional value in that regard, but it would be good to test usage of the StratML value chain elements to see how far they can take us. As far as I’m aware, no on has done that yet.
  137.
  138. Tim, enabling coordination among nonprofits is among the purposes of the StratML standard. See use case Goal 2: Charitable Organizations -
  139. Publish the strategic and performance plans and reports of charitable organizations on the Web in open, standard, machine-readable format.
  140.
  141. Now that charitable contributions will no longer be tax-deductible, it will become more important for nonprofits not only to work together more efficiently but also to document and report their effectiveness to potential donors.
  142.
  143. It would be great to engage student volunteers in helping to render in open, standard, machine-readable format the performance plans and reports of charitable orgs in your area. I’ve been hoping we might be able to do that here on Hilton Head Island, in support of my proposal for the Mayor’s visioning project.
  144.
  145. In the meantime, a quick and dirty StratML rendition of BCRDC’s about statement is now available at http://stratml.us/drybridge/index.htm#BCRDC A link provided there opens the file in Joe Carmel’s XForm for StratML Part 2. However, I’m providing it only for demonstration purposes because Joe’s form has a few quirks that make it ill-suited for everyday usage. Chris’ app is probably more reliable and Patrick Halstead is working on a more usable free-standing Part 2 form. (Joe’s Part 1 form works great: http://legisworks.org/StratML/Part1Form.xml I use it almost every day, including just now to convert BCRD plan.)

  157.
  158. Good to meet you.
  159.
  160. You can create and publish StratML for your project(s), including vision, mission, goals, objectives, performance measures, actions in https://www.StratNavApp.com It is free to use for a limited number of projects.
  161.
  162. Just for the record, whilst StratNavApp allows for actions, StratML does not. So whilst you can include actions in StratNavApp they will be omitted from any StratNavApp output.
  163.
  164. Please let me know if you need any assistance to get going.
  165.
  166. Kind Regards,
  167. Chris

  182. We’re flushing out a concept for conducting a “State of the County” assessment and report. We have over 100 non-profits that are doing good things but no way yet of connecting everyone. Sooo. StratML comes to mind to collect vision, mission, goals, objectives, performance measures, actions etc. We have to keep things as simple as possible – would like to involve students (middle school – high school) in collecting the data.

  201. Fascinating...I've enjoyed reading!!
  202.
  203. After I shared my PSP on my website, three people contacted me saying they were really inspired by it, and had wanted to join with me because they had a similar passion, and have been working on their own for years (it was in regards to stronger neighborhoods). StratML's drive to make standardize these kinds of plans and make them more 'connected' is exactly what our networked world needs!
  204.
  205. I'd love to have a library of a dozen or so people's PSPs' available on a website, so that people who haven't started a PSP yet can get some ideas for what would make for good goals, objectives and strategies....no need to reinvent the wheel!
  206.

  235. Happy new year to you too, Rob. Your blog is cool but I love your plan even more. It may come as no surprise to you that it is now in the StratML collection, at http://stratml.us/drybridge/index.htm#RGP Seeing your values makes clear why you are such a likeable and engaging person.
  236.
  237. Here are some comments, for whatever they may be worth:
  238.
  239. 1. Yours is the second “personal” plan in the collection but it is the first that is truly personal. Brand Nieman’s was the first but it related to his employee performance plan at EPA: http://stratml.us/drybridge/index.htm#BLN Unfortunately, Brand passed away a couple years ago. Having such plans in the collection helps demonstrate applicability of the standard to personal as well as group and organizational plans.
  240. 2. With reference to your Objective 3.A(3)b: PM System - Conduct an in-depth study of a chosen project management system for full adoption, it would be good if any such system you may choose supports the StratML standard.
  241. 3. Although I have rendered your plan in StratML Part 1 format, your third-level and particularly your fourth-level objectives would be better documented as <PerformanceIndicator>s in Part 2 format.
  242. 4. Clicking on this link opens your plan in Joe Carmel’s XForm for Part 2 but the form has some quirks. So I wouldn’t advise using it without understanding its constraints and limitations.
  243. 5. Your sequencing scheme doesn’t display as well in StratML format as in your original format. Limiting objectives to one or two levels and using decimal numbers -- e.g. 1.1.1 rather than 1.A(1) – and documenting 3rd and 4th level elements as <PerformanceIndicator>s might be better.
  244.
  245. I could probably go on but that’s probably enough complexity for now. With reference to your offer to serve as a “lab rat,” I’m copying a few folks who might like to engage you as a usability tester for their StratML apps and services.
  246.
  247. Finally, when the StratML Committee reconvenes under the new auspices of the 3D PDF Association, I believe the priorities should be to:
  248.
  249. a) reaffirm Part 1 under the ANSI/ISO process, perhaps with no changes, and
  250. b) reestablish Part 2 under the ANSI process, with a minor, technical change, as quickly and straightforwardly as possible.
  251.
  252. However, I look forward to having input from you and other participants in the Committee. As always, what we do will depend upon consensus among the participants.
