- Lesson 1
- ---Welcome, everyone, to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Before we get into the theory part of the course, I think it is important that we take a while to definite what magick is.
- ---To me, I lean towards Aleister Crowley’s definition of magick. This definition is that “Magick is the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with Will.” While this definition states that magick is a science and an art it does not quite go into the theory of magick’s operation. This is where my personal expanded definition of magick comes into action.
- ---“Magick is the science and art of causing change to occur in objective reality in conformity with the operation of the Will upon subjective reality.” For this definition, and for this class, objective reality will be assumed to be physical reality and the things we can detect with physical instruments and sense with the physical senses. Subjective reality is all other realities. Through this it can be seen that by the operation of the Will upon the metaphysical, quite literally meaning that which is beyond the scope of the limited human senses, and is determined to be the subjective reality, manifest results, through the process that is the science and art of magick, can be attained in objective reality. This is the framework we will be using in this class.
- ---To put it in the simplest possible terms, I believe that the definition of magick is this: “Magick is the art of creation.” I will be going a bit more in depth into the nature and theory of subjective reality in the next lesson. For now, I want to leave you all with a question to answer.
- ---Tell me in the comments please: “What is magick to you?” and “What is your own definition of magick?”
- Lesson 2
- ---Welcome back to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Glad to have you here. To recap, this is the expanded definition of magick that I presented last week: “Magick is the science and art of causing change to occur in objective reality in conformity with the operation of the Will upon subjective reality.” This week I will focus on a more well-defined view of subjective reality.
- ---The Big Bang theory states that at one point, at the beginning of the universe, everything there was and ever would be was in a near infinitesimally small point called a singularity. Quantum entanglement is a phenomena that, for its application in this class, is concerned with particles being connected to each other and affecting each other across space and time. For further elaboration on quantum entanglement you can do a search on “spooky action at a distance” and the “EPR Paradox” which was something that Einstein and his colleagues worked with.
- ---I introduce quantum entanglement here to address that if the Big Bang singularity was a near infinitesimally small point that contained everything then at one point everything was connected. It is logical to say that the Big Bang singularity was a quantum entanglement.
- ---If the bonds of quantum entanglement from the time of the Big Bang are, perhaps, still intact, then this would mean that, to this day, everything is still connected. I am connected to all of you in some way, and to everything else in some way. You are all connected to everything else. This can be expressed through the concept of Indra’s Net that is a part of Hinduism.
- ---In Indra’s Net there are countless amounts of pearls, and each and every one of these pearls are woven together in a net. Each pearl in the net is connected to every other pearl in the net. This is literally an infinite number of interconnections. This is our reality.
- ---Since everything is connected to everything else, this means that, from any single point, such as the point that you are in as you are reading this now, it is possible for you to have access to the entirety of reality. While the physical senses are limited to what we tend to call objective reality, the imagination is not held to those limitations. The imagination is the sense that is used to perceive the subjective realities that the physical senses cannot.
- ---Science tends towards the thought that the universe is finite. I like to believe that the universe is a transcendental infinite, which to me, means that the universe is an infinity so large that it must contain all possible qualities. This means that the universe is infinite but also finite because being finite would be a quality of a transcendental infinite that contains all qualities. For the sake of this class, we will assume that the universe is an infinity that can be expressed by using the quality of the finite in mathematics.
- ---If the universe is, in fact, a transcendental infinite then this means that everything must exist somewhere across space and time. This means that somewhere, everything has an objective reality that can be sensed from the point of view of the proper physical space. This means that every subjective reality has an objective place across space and time. This concept is important for things like manifestation magick, as a good example, because it means that the goal of manifestation is not necessarily to create a reality, but to travel to the place in space and time where the desired result is already taking place. This concept can be expressed in simple terms through the magick of walking to the store to manifest a loaf of bread.
- ---This concept can also be applied to things like visualization. When you visualize being in the store and getting some bread, you are seeing with your imagination the reality where you are at the store and getting the bread. This reality, at times, could be the reality that is experienced. This is also a possible explanation for Déjà vu, through the process of the mind having already experienced a reality before it became an objective experience. This is often the case with prophetic dreams also.
- ---So now I have explained how your reality is connected to all other realities through the bonds of quantum entanglement being unbroken from the time of the Big Bang singularity. I have expressed this in terms of the application of imagination as a sense by which subjective reality can be perceived. I have given an example of this through a couple of its magickal applications. Given the definition of magick that I have given last week, and again this week near the beginning of this lesson, it can be concluded that working the Will upon subjective reality, as viewed as an existing objective reality through some potential point of view, can have a real effect in determining which objective reality is experienced in this physical space.
- ---I will conclude this lesson with a simple experiment that I want you all to try, as well as a short educational video that shows, practically, how the imagination is able to perceive subjective reality and how it does have an impact upon physical objective reality. The experiment is simple and it goes like this: Take a few moments each morning to visualize yourself finding a coin during the day. This can be any type of coin, for the people here in the USA, as an example, it could be imagining yourself finding a quarter on the ground. Do this every morning until you find the coin and take notes about your visualization practice and how the objective reality of finding the coin was similar or different to your imagination if you do find the coin.
- ---Here is the video. It is an experiment with a rubber hand. Enjoy it and I hope you can use it as a practical supplement to this lesson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxwn1w7MJvk
- Lesson 3
- ---Welcome back to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Last week we talked about subjective reality and how it is a valid reality. We also talked about how things are all connected. Today I will go a bit more into detail about these connections.
- ---If everything exists somewhere, objectively, and everything is connected, then the first important thing that I want to express to you today is about the nature of language. A word invokes a thought in the mind. Every word has meaning. Every meaning is connected to a thought. This is how a word is the thought that it represents, a symbol. And this is how the thought of a thing, which is represented by the word, is tantamount to some part of the thing itself, given the connected nature of reality. This is part of why it is so important to be precise in spell work. Every word matters.
- ---Everything is said to be energy. It is my belief, which has shown accurate to me in practice, that all energy contains information. This can also be backed by the ability to break down anything into numbers. To me, this information is the building block of the apparent phenomena of consciousness. This information innate in all energy is a form of intelligence. All energy has an intelligence through the information that forms it. Everything can be seen to be mental. Everything is mind. This is the viewpoint of animism and also panpsychicism. It is what I have found to be valid. This also is a deeper layer of the reasoning behind why subjective reality is accessible through the imagination which is mind.
- ---My practice for you this week is to take a word, any word, but preferably one that is either very meaningful to you or very ordinary and not meaningful to you at all, and to meditate on it and allow your mind to day dream about it or just mentally wander on the subject of it. Take into consideration in this exercise the relationship between mind and meaning. Also take into account the relationship between the subjective quality and reality and the objective quality and reality of the word. The goal of this practice is to deepen your understanding of the way things are connected through the mind and how they have both a subjective and objective mental existence.
- Lesson 4
- --Welcome back to Fundamental Magickal Theory. This week is all about symbols. I spoke last week about how language is a symbol and how words evoke the thought of a thing which is connected to the thing. This week I will explore this concept a bit more in its practical application.
- --If every letter is a symbol and every word is tantamount to an evocation given its meaning, then this means that other symbols can do the same thing. Many of you here from the chaos magick community will be able to instantly realize this to some extent. Language is a set of symbols that holds power because we collectively choose to give it meaning. What happens though if you, individually, say maybe draw something, then say it means something to you. You know, like a sigil.
- --The symbols you create for yourself in your own workings can have just as much evocative power and ability to manifest something as the words we each agree on the meaning for. It is the meaning of the symbol that matters more than the symbol itself. This is why it is said that the true sigil is in the mind.
- --This also holds true for any symbol, not just for letters and words. Like, for example, in ceremonial or ritual magick. During a rite the things you do are symbolic. This could be blowing out a candle or pointing in a direction with the wand as examples. Taking these simple actions, and the power of words and the meaning of symbols, which are words among other things, you have the power to create your own rituals with your own given meanings that are connected in reality to the things they represent. This is a huge part of why it is so important to be precise in working magick, especially when using languages and symbols that have collective meaning.
- --I hope you are starting to see more now how magick truly is a science and an art. For your assignment this week, go do some magick. Make a sigil, or a ritual, or a spell or something, but whatever you craft for this assignment, pay extra special attention to its meanings and how you apply those meanings.
- Lesson 5
- --Hello everyone and welcome back to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Today we will take a brief look at several of the models of magick and establish some common traits between them.
- --Information model. Everything is information. This model tends to incorporate ideas from information science, a big one being that information is always maintained and never lost. The idea of information not being lost ties into two very important premises I have addressed earlier in this class. If the universe is finite, and remember that the finite is a quality of the transcendental infinite, so a universe on the scale of the transcendental infinite must also be finite, then the universe is a closed system. The universe being a thermodynamically closed system in relation to no information being lost ties directly to the Law of Conservation of Energy which states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed.
- --This takes us into the energy model. Here is where it is claimed that everything is energy. So the energy model believes that everything has a fundamental being that it is made from. This is nice, and it begs the question of rather the material world or the immaterial world came first.
- --The psychological model. This model states that everything is in your head. Given the sciences, this is a viable position to take since it cannot be proven that anything exists beyond the senses and leads to the mind-body problem in philosophy. It is quite possible that everything is just in your head. I tend to see this through the point of view of Indra’s Net and the infinite quantum entanglement that I mentioned earlier in this course.
- --I like to see the fundamental being of energy as containing information and I like to see that information as a form of intelligence. I choose to believe that everything is mental. That everything is a thought and we are all in a collective dream, all in each other’s heads.
- --This is where things get rather fun. Allow me to touch on some of the Hermetic principles, which can be found in full in the Kybalion, which I recommend as a reading assignment for you all. It is a fairly short read, but full of exceptional information. As within, so without is the principle I will touch on now.
- --Given the infinite entanglement of Indra’s Net, and seeing things from the perspective of the individual frame of reference, it can be seen that, given an infinite universe, everything is within you that is without of you. You are your own unique universe. It is possible to change your world by changing your mind or changing your being. I have personally done this many times and I see internal alchemy as the strongest form of magick.
- --As within can be seen as a subjective reality and as without can be seen as an objective reality. Between this subjective and objective reality is you, and all of your actions and thoughts and choices have a causal relationship with your experiences. Everything you do is, in fact, an act of manifestation and an act of magick. Take some time today to ask yourself the question, “Why?” Self-knowledge is the key to effective self-transformation through the magickal process of internal alchemy, and as such, is also the key to much objective results-based magick through the changes that occur in objective reality though the subjective changes made through internal alchemy.
- Lesson 6
- --Welcome back everyone to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Today I will cover some meditation basics since it is a very important tool to be used in magickal practice.
- --In meditation one can learn about their self. One can learn how they function and why they do what they do. Through meditative introspection one can learn the internal causes that are behind their actions as effects. This is very important because it allows the magician to be able to gain the knowledge needed to change their own self in such a way that they can attain the results that they desire.
- --Keep in mind that magick is manipulating the subjective reality to cause changes to occur in objective reality. Inner causes are subjective and outer actions are objective. Through this, internal alchemy can be performed effectively through knowledge of the self gained through meditation.
- --Another very important purpose of meditation to the magician is learning the mental voice. Every day in the muddle of ordinary consciousness there is so much going on that most people are never aware of. Do not hesitate if you have trouble meditating because your mind will not clear. This just means that you have more work to do to sort out the inner muddle.
- --Within the normal muddle there are several different main things to be aware of. The most important is your own mental voice. Everyone has their own internal voice and it is important that one meditate, preferably in a neither-neither method, to be able to isolate and identify their mental voice from the rest of their thoughts and any other voices that may be present in the mind.
- --Once one meditates enough that they have learned to identify their own mental voice and the mind is typically devoid of muddle and clear on a regular basis, it is actually normal to start recognizing other voices in the mind. This is the beginning of the development of telepathy and is a common occurrence for the adept meditation practitioner. Telepathy is not anything special and it happens beyond the muddle of ordinary consciousness all the time. Telepathy is communication with the energetic system that constitutes the soul of another being. Since I have presented before that everything is a consciousness this means that with telepathy, you can theoretically speak to anything. This means clear communication with gods, demons, angels, plants, animals, and even your shoe is possible. This is a very important reason why the mental voice must be identified. Personally, I have meditated to this point of developing telepathy and I use this skill, with real world objective results, on a daily basis.
- --So now I will go into several different types of meditation. To me, there are only two main types of meditation and any different form of meditation can be classified into one of these two types. The two types of meditation to me are meditation with a focus and meditation without a focus.
- --Meditation with a focus constitutes meditation on a word or phrase of power such as a mantra, meditation on a question, meditation while listening to music, or really any other meditation where there is a focal point.
- --In my experience and according to the basics of the theory of relativity, knowledge of a thing exists relative to the thing itself. This is why experience, often called gnosis, is very important. Part of the Buddhist teachings is the experience of Satori. What Satori is would be the experience of the self. Since knowledge of a thing exists relative to a thing that means that to experience the self, one must experience it relative to something. This is why meditation with a focal point is so important. The Satori experience of the self can only happen when the self is experienced relative to a focal point.
- --Meditation without a focal point is, to me, always a neither-neither meditation. This means that there is no focal point within or without. No focal point subjectively or objectively. This type of meditation is very good for observing thoughts as they arrive. It is good for the practice of Samadhi where one becomes completely in tune with their environment and thus their objective world and their subjective world are united. This ability to observe thoughts and other goings on of the subjective, internal, mental reality is a large part of why neither-neither meditation without a focal point is useful.
- --One other thing that neither-neither meditation is good for is for allowing the free flow of energy to an activity. It is good for meditation in the midst of action and is the ideal state of meditation for creative projects. The meditation practitioner should aim to always be in a state of neither-neither meditation during all of life, and to be able to realize when this state has been left and to return to it. This allows for the act of creation in an open channel of energy from the internal subjective reality to the external objective reality at all times. This makes life itself an act of creative and transformative magick. This is a state that I am personally striving to embody on a regular basis now in my own personal practice and is likened to Zen Master Hakuin Ekaku’s ideal of living life as one koan. It is the living sound of one hand.
- --In my experience, the ideal practice of neither-neither meditation is what is referred to as zazen. It literally translates to roughly mean sitting sleep. To meditate in zazen, simply be as you are and just vibe with life in the moment. You will arrive naturally at the thoughts you are meant to arrive at, and this will include having to confront all of your held baggage and internal issues, so do be warned.
- --Through meditation we can all grow as a magician and as a person. The more you meditate and learn to simply live and live fully as you are in the moment the more you will realize how much power you have always had the entire time. The process of growing as a magician is like the process of creating the Philosopher’s Stone in the alchemical traditions, with one major difference. In meditation you do not create the stone, you clear away all of the muddle, excess, and baggage that is keeping you from living life in accordance with the Philosopher’s Stone that you have always already had.
- --My assignment to you this week is this: Set aside at least 5 minutes each day to practice neither-neither meditation. If neither-neither meditation is problematic to you, which it typically is to people who have not practiced meditation very much, then do a meditation with a focal point using this song as the focal point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0IoDwBxiCU
- Lesson 7
- --Welcome back everyone to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Today I elaborate some previously covered material to demonstrate how it can apply directly to internal alchemy and external results through the alchemical process.
- --“As within, so without.” This is not just a statement of correlation; this is a statement of causation. Given the mentions of Indra’s Net in previous lessons, where I mentioned that everything is connected and we are all pearls in Indra’s Net, let us now talk about what it means to be a pearl in Indra’s Net.
- --Each pearl is a universe. The self is like a drop of water in that the drop of water is not separate from the ocean and the self is not separate from the universe. While every pearl is connected to every other pearl, every pearl is still individual. The actions that happen “within” your own internal world in your subjective reality directly, in a causal manner, impact your external universe “without”. Since the self is not separate from the universe, each and every pearl, through its infinite interconnections, is, in its own way, a configuration of the totality of the universe.
- --Through changing your internal world, and working with your subjective reality, you can carry out operations that literally change your objective reality and external world. This is the basis of the transformative power of internal alchemy and also a viewpoint from which all magickal operations can be seen as internal alchemy. Remember that magick is the manipulation of subjective reality for objective result. What you have been taught up to this point is literally the means by which magick functions. Change your mind; change your universe.
- --As you progress in your own Great Work and elevate your own self, you will find that you will be elevating your entire universe and experience of objective, external, reality. Likewise, if you run into an obstacle in external reality, there is a cause for the existence of that obstacle in your internal, subjective, reality. To work with either the external objective or the internal subjective world is to work with the other. This is a reason why meditation continues to be important.
- --Through introspective meditation one can gain knowledge of the self, and thus the internal subjective reality, and through that knowledge work can be done to transmute and elevate the individual universe, and thus also impact and elevate the external universe without or, vice versa, the internal universe within.
- --Also, through this process of internal alchemy one can have external influence over other living beings. Remember, all of the pearls are connected in infinite different ways. This is the reason why I typically do not do baneful magick. To harm the external is to harm the internal. To cast ruefully on another is to cast ruefully upon the self. However, many powerful workings can be done through the manipulation of the universe without through the manipulation of the universe within.
- --My assignment for you this week, is similar to the experiment with the coin in previous weeks, but this time, do not cast to find the coin in the external world. This time, in as detailed of a manner as possible, cast upon the internal world in such as way as it means to you, that you will manifest the coin and find it in your external world. Once again, the coin is just a simple example; feel free to substitute it for whatever item, event, or occurrence that you see fitting. I would love to hear reports of any successes in this operation in the comments below.
- Lesson 8
- --Hello everyone and welcome back to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Today we will look at a practical example of lessons so far in applied action. The case study for today is telepathy.
- --I know I mentioned before about how telepathy is just another way of communication and how you can talk to anything with it since everything is information and consciousness. But how exactly that translates to a functional application is interesting.
- --As within, so without plays a huge role in this. Since we are all connected through the concept of Indra’s Net, telepathy allows you to talk to things that are in your external, objective world through talking to these things as they exist in your internal, subjective world. This is one example of how realities do connect. The thing that is talked to exists both inside your head and outside of your head.
- --This is possible because of the nature of something called the “set of all possible sets”. The set of all possible sets must, paradoxically, also contain itself. This means that in Indra’s Net every one of the interconnected pearls in the net also contains the entire net. Here it can be seen that we are dealing with several different types of infinity. This can be simplified by thinking about the counting numbers. Each number is an individual unit but each number also contains infinite decimals within it. We are each like a counting number, containing the objective universe within our subjective reality, inside our mind.
- --Think about this nature of the mind and its subjective reality as you move forward in your meditation practices and magickal workings and how this applies to internal alchemy, such as what was discussed last week.
- --I know the lesson was short this week. Please take time now to ask any questions you may have in the comments below, or feel free to message me directly.
- Lesson 9
- --Hello everyone and welcome back to Fundamental Magickal Theory. I have pretty much explained so far what magick is, so this week I want to discuss how it works.
- --Everything can be tracked back to a theoretical fundamental cause. Currently we know that fundamental cause as the Big Bang. From the point of this fundamental cause, everything tha has happened, and continue to happen, is a matter of cause and effect.
- --What this means is that we live in a universe that is theoretically mathematically perfect. Also, if the universe is indeed a transcendental infinite, as I have presented it to be previously, then everything exists somewhere. This means that manifestation, such as in the exercises that I have presented previously, is not just a matter of manipulating subjective reality to impact objective reality. It becomes a matter of making the right choices to accomplish the proper goals.
- --In a mathematically perfect, causal, universe, it is possible to see everything as being deterministic, and all preordained within the totality of the universal system. It can also be said that, given the deterministic extreme, all of this data results in complete freedom of will. In short, everything is random, until it is not, and this is a matter of necessity. Things move into being because they were moved into being. There is always a force at motion and an object at rest stays at rest while an object in motion stays in motion.
- --Since the universe can be seen as a closed system, since the transcendental infinite, by its nature, is also finite, it can be seen that the universe is always in motion.
- --We are all entities of consciousness, and energetic systems. Everything is an energetic system and all energy is information and consciousness. Everything is in a state of motion, and of communication. This is why it is important that you learn to find and work with your own natural flow.
- --Working with your own natural flow allows you to communicate with the rest of the universe, be it subjective or objective, in a more optimal and efficient manner. Aleister Crowley called this natural flow the True Will. It has been called other things in other traditions also, such as Zen or Tao.
- --What is important is that you realize that you are always creating something and you are always in motion and affecting change. It is also important to remember that knowledge of a thing exists relative to the thing so the True Will must be experienced and not necessarily overly logically conceptualized.
- --Aleister Crowley said, as I stated near the beginning of this class, that magick is the art and science of causing change to occur in conformity with will. I say that magick is the art of creation. Today I want to hear from you all the answer to this question. What are you creating?
- Lesson 10
- --Hello everyone and welcome back to Fundamental Magickal Theory. Today I will talk about what I believe is the most optimal manner in which to go about living a life of magick.
- --First I want to talk about the concept of “lust for result” since it is something that people warn others about so much in magickal practice. For one thing, it is ok to desire a result. In the literal sense of the word it is even alright to lust for a result. What the concept of lust for result actually talks about, in my experience, is the excess imposition of order upon reality by the individual. Speaking in terms of thermodynamic and entropy, when order is imposed upon a system it results in a decrease in the total possible probability states. The simple way to put this is that by imposition of order it is possible to literally destroy the possibilities that would lead to the desired result before those possibilities are able to happen.
- --Now let’s talk about how to best live a life without the excess imposition of order that is commonly known as lust for result. Wu Wei is the named that refers to a state of what could be called effortless effort. This is the proper way of life in my experience, and this is why. Like water, I have found that it is the natural tendency of all energy to follow the path of least resistance. Also, in chemistry, it is known that things form bonds the most easily with the thing that completes them. What I find this to mean is that when you live a life of flowing, and without imposition of order, you will naturally have what you desire, but not necessarily what you think you desire. The best life is not only possible, but sort of paradoxically, when you do not try to make the best life happen through excess imposition of order, that best life will naturally occur.
- --The way I try to stay in a Wu Wei flow state in my life is through this saying that I formulated in my own experience. It is this: “When you are hot, be hot; when you are cold, be cold.” To me, this is simple, and it means that in whatever state you are in during the present moment, you should be exactly that, completely, and nothing in excess or less of it. To be as you are in the moment, throughout the chain of moments, is the best way to flow in Wu Wei and in doing so, t naturally follow the path of least resistance and satisfaction through the acquisition of the natural energetic desires, despite what one things is their desire. Remember previous lessons where I have said that knowledge of a thing exists relative to the thing; this includes the thoughts of the desires of the self relative to the self.
- --To me, love is the active process by which things seek satisfaction. In existence, things are in motion, which means there is no absolute stillness, and as such also no completion. Everything exists in an incomplete state and thus naturally seeks completion and satisfaction through that completion. This is love. The entire universe is an act of love. This is what I believe Aleister Crowley was referring to in his declaration of the law when he said, “Love is the law; love under will.”
- ---Meditation is a very valuable tool to use to strip away the excess, and the tendency to impose order, and also the tendency to identify with your thoughts instead of your own fluid nature and will. If you have not yet, I encourage you to start a meditation practice and in the time you set aside focus on being hot when you are hot and cold when you are cold. Do not try to clear your mind or anything else at all. Just sit, and be as you are. Through the process of being as you are it will become more apparent what the baggage is that you hold and you will be able to deal with it. --We are all magickal beings by default. Magick is your birthright. Magick is your nature. Practice being as you are so that you can learn to see more clearly the amazing magickal being that you are. This universe is love. God is love. And we are not separate from God. If you remember my teachings on Indra’s Net you will see that we all are God. Every last one of us is the master of our own pearl, our own existence. And together we are the creators of our joint reality. Ask yourself, because with every thought and action you are doing it, “What am I creating?”
- Gavin Wince's Existics material and Marko Rodin's Vortex Based Math complete the picture alongside this document of understandings to allow for a Grand Unified Theory of Everything. Wince's material shows how particles interact with each other in such a way that there could theoretically be an unseen world that directly interacts with our own. It is my theory, and practice, that this unseen world can be accessed and that part of the mysticism of magick across the ages has involved working with this unseen world.
