Early game - Pre Falkner

scouting slots, looking for a main, if you aren't finding one. you have the choice to bite the bullet and hope you find something better in fishing. beating falkner is relatively easy and most any pokemon with good moves can do it because stats at those early levels doesn't matter as much as your actual level. but doing this with a trash poke you don't want to main will be putting you behind on the xp curve

Early Game - Post Falkner

Not really scouting slots, if you have a good main doing some of the route 32 trainers can be good but if you have a good main you don't really need them and if you have a bad main they can be very very slow and possibly kill you. a level 7 from union cave or a fishing poke can be good targets since the difficulty doesn't really pick up until bugsy and rival 2. but if you do this you'll be behind on the happiness grind and also behind on xp.

MidGame - goldenrod

 at this point it doesn't really matter. most likely you can find a decently leveled poke in the bug catching contest but you really should have a decent main or at least something that can be decent (a poke that is easily walled or a poke that does'nt have reliable answers to certain common types like grass/water. the sudowood can also be a viable option or the 800$ poke (it's level 15) that being said main switching at this point is pointless since it'll be far behind the curve

Midgame ecruteak

if you don't have a good main, get past rival 3 and catch the 40. make sure you have repels from azalea or goldenrod. and go to the south route repel and twitch in place for a bit, if you don't find it. leave and reenter the route until you find it. this doesn't work if the 40 is completely shit but you will have tms and surf to even it out hopefully.
