- 0. What Are DVs Anyway?
- -----
- Okay, you, stop. I see you, you're about to feel overwhelmed by numbers. Relax. This will be easy.
- DVs are simple. When a Pokemon is encountered in the wild, or hatched from an egg, each stat gets a random number assigned to it between 0-15. But doesn't that /suck/? Yeah, it makes every Pokemon unique and that's all great and wonderful, but when it comes time to battle, isn't it a shame that you can get the short end of the stick just because your Pokemon has worse DVs than the opponent?
- Of course it does! But don't worry! Breeding perfect Pokemon in CC is super simple, and I'm going to tell you all you need to know about how to do it. You can be ready to breed in as little time as it takes for you to catch ONE SINGLE POKEMON. Let's get into it.
- -----
- 1. Getting Started
- -----
- So you're ready to breed your awesome perfect Pokemon, but where do you begin? Well, unless you're breeding for specific Hidden Powers (more on that later), you need a Ditto with 15 Defense DV, and either 7 or 15 Special DV. That's it! If you are breeding for specific Hidden Powers, we'll cover what you need in that section, but I kid you not, it's just three more /slightly/ different Ditto. Thought this was gonna be complicated? Nah, we don't play that.
- -----
- 1.1 Gaming the System
- -----
- So you /could/ go catch those Ditto in Cerulean Cave or somethin', waiting around for them to show up like a chump... like I did. OR, you could do something a lot easier and faster - resetting! You see, Crystal Clear is amazing and offers Ditto as a meme starter for challenges. But heck that, we're just gonna start up a new separate save file and use the soft-reset mechanic on speedup to get these blobs, then use bgb or MyOldBoy and their built-in smooth-as-silk trading systems to send them over to the main save. Cheating? Ehh. Time saved? MAXIMUM. Battle Tower? Gone.
- Note: It's best to begin your Ditto saves in Johto so that you can ensure no Trainer Battles before getting to a Pokemon Center to trade. Thanks to Discord member Alex Russell for this amendment!

- 2. Breeding Mechanics
- -----
- Okay, so this will be the most intimidating part to read, but it's as simple as cereal and milk, and you don't panic when you have to buy those, do you? Well, nevermind that, the cereal aisle can be intimidating. But this isn't. Let's get into it.
- If you put a Ditto into the daycare, it will always be the one passing down DVs. Otherwise, the parent with the opposite gender as the child passes them. Regardless of which one is passing, the Defense DV will ALWAYS be passed down to the child. So you've got a Ditto with a 15 Defense DV? All of its children will also have a 15 Defense DV!
- Special is the other DV that Ditto/Father passes, but this one is only slightly more complicated than Defense. Ditto/Father passes its Special DV half the time. The other half the time, it will either add or subtract 8 from the DV, and pass that instead. So if your Ditto has a Special DV of 7, it has a 50% chance to pass 7 on to the child, and a 50% chance to pass 15 onto the child. If your Ditto has an 8 in Special, it will either pass 8 or 0 Special onto the child.
- This is the extent of control you have over DVs the child can inherit from parents. Attack and Speed will always be randomly generated, while HP uses a formula to determine its DV, depending on the DVs in your other stats.
- So... that's it! You just get that Ditto, stick it in with whatever you want to breed and keep going until you get the perfect baby to hatch. It takes time, but there are no other barriers to entry after you get this one Ditto. Unless...
- -----
- 2.1 - Egg Moves
- -----
- So almost every Pokemon that can be bred has special moves they can only learn if their father has the moves. For example, Charmander can only learn Rock Slide in CC if its father knew it when it was in the daycare... creating the baby Charmander. How did the father get the move? Well, the father was a Tyranitar that knew the move, while the mother was a Charizard!
- The female Pokemon will always pass its earliest species form down to the egg, while the father will pass DVs and egg moves, if it has any that it can pass down. Serebii's Pokedex has a nice section at the bottom of their Pokedex pages where egg moves can be found, just be sure you're using their gen 2 Pokedex! Similarly, Bulbapedia also has an Egg moves section for any Pokemon, just be sure to click on gen II!

- 3. Hidden Power
- -----
- So you're ready to breed your amazing Heracross when you realize "Hey, know what this Pokemon could use? More coverage than just Megahorn!", but to your surprise Game Freak decided that you really should just have Megahorn. Well screw them, who are they to tell you what's best? Hidden Power is a move every Pokemon that can learn TMs can learn, and its type and power is dependent entirely upon your Pokemon's DVs.
- So how do you breed a Pokemon to have the DVs necessary for the correct Hidden Power? First, you're gonna need three more Ditto. Yeah, I know it was annoying the first time! But just hear me out okay, it'll be worth it, probably, maybe.
- So the new Ditto(s) you're gonna want are the following:
- 14 in Defense, 7/15 in Special
- 13 in Defense, 7/15 in Special
- 12 in Defense, 7/15 in Special
- I'll wait. Got those yet? Yeah? Okay, now you can literally breed perfect Hidden Power /ANYTHING YOU WANT/. You see, the way Hidden Power is determined in GSC and CC is dependent on what your Attack and Defense DVs are. That's it. Speed? Nah. Special? Doesn't matter. You'll want to shoot for 15 Speed and Special, while the Defense DV will be whatever you want it to be depending on which Ditto you put in, and Attack will be random per egg.
- So what DV combinations give what Hidden Powers? Here is a handy spreadsheet, just for you <3
- Dark: 15 Attack, 15 Defense
- Dragon: 15 Attack, 14 Defense
- Ice: 15 Attack, 13 Defense
- Psychic: 15 Attack, 12 Defense
- Electric: 14 Attack, 15 Defense
- Grass: 14 Attack, 14 Defense
- Water: 14 Attack, 13 Defense
- Fire: 14 Attack, 12 Defense
- Steel: 13 Attack, 15 Defense
- Ghost: 13 Attack, 14 Defense
- Bug: 13 Attack, 13 Defense
- Rock: 13 Attack, 12 Defense
- Poison: 12 Attack, 14 Defense
- Flying: 12 Attack, 13 Defense
- Fighting: 12 Attack, 12 Defense
- Big scary list. But just look, all of those have a Defense stat of one of the three Ditto you caught earlier, which it will always pass down! So it's a matter of time before your Ditto also passes down the Special DV, the Speed DV randoms onto 15, and the Attack DV randoms onto the desired number.
- Admittedly, this can take a while. I've done it before, many times, and you're gonna want to use speedup for this process if I'm just being the realest possible dude right now. But we've added Quality of Life additions to CC that take some of the pain out of this process:
- - When the game tries to generate an egg, it rolls an extra time.
- * After beating the Elite Four, it will roll a third time if the first two don't succeed.
- - Two tiles of grass on Route 34 can be permanently cut to ensure you have a long stretch of land between Route 34, Goldenrod, and Route 35 that is uninterrupted by NPCs or wild Pokemon!
- -----
- 4. Summary
- -----
- So that's a lot of reading, but if you want a condensed version of what you need for breeding, here it is:
- Perfect breeding Ditto: 15 Defense and 7 or 15 Special
- Hidden Power breeding Dittos:
- 12 Def, 7/15 Special
- 13 Def, 7/15 Special
- 14 Def, 7/15 Special
- Children will always inherit Ditto's Defense DV, and a 50% chance to inherit a Special DV that is + or - 8 that of the Ditto's Special, which means either 7 or 15 Special DV works for the Ditto.
- So that's it! I've taught you everything there is to know about breeding competitive Pokemon in Crystal Clear, probably. If you have any questions, or amendments to make, DM me about them or discuss them on the server and I'll be happy to discuss things!
