MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang believes that the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona would not affect the economy.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said on Monday that President Aquino will not be distracted from the task of improving the economy.

“The impeachment has now been diverted to the Senate and the Senate will be the main focus of the impeachment trial. The President right now is continually focusing on improving the economy… We will continue to provide service to the poor. However, our advocacy against graft and corruption will still continue,” he said.

The Palace hopes that the Supreme Court will not stop the trial in the Senate from proceeding. The trial is expected to start on January 16.

“Naniniwala po kami na ang taumbayan na po ang nagdesisyon. Ang aming pakiusap sa Korte Suprema ay pakinggan po nila ang sinabi po ng taumbayan. Sila po ay naniniwalang dapat ituloy ang impeachment. Naniniwala po sila sa kilos ni Pangulong Aquino,” Lacierda said.
