- Homework: p. 149 parts 4 and 5 - write an article to give advice to students coming to your country.
- ---
- p. 152 part 1 - in pairs, complete the paragraph to make correct third conditional and “should have”, “could have” or “might have” sentences for regrets and advisability about the past
- 1 had been
- 2 wouldn’t have gotten / couldn’t have gotten / might not have gotten
- 3 could have frozen
- 4 wouldn’t have been able to / might not have been able to
- 5 could have turned out / might have turned out / would have turned out
- 6 hadn’t gone
- We don’t use “could” together with “be able to”, because they have the same meaning (with people):
- could = was able to, were able to, would be able to
- could have = would have been able to
- ---
- If I had had more money, I would have bought a car. = In the imaginary world where I had money, I definitely bought a car.
- If I had had more money, I could have bought a car. = In the imaginary world where I had money, I had the ability to buy a car.
- If I had had more money, I might have bought a car. = In the imaginary world where I had money, maybe I bought the car and maybe I didn’t.
- might = maybe + would (or maybe + will in speculations about the real future)
- I might have bought a car. = Maybe I would have bought a car.
- (with things (not people), “could” has the same meaning as “might”)
- ---
- part 2 - make statements (with grammar from this unit) based on each of the sentences
- 1 If his father hadn’t given him a camera, he might not have been a photographer.
- 2 He might not have found the snow leopard.
- 3 Steve should have moved higher up the mountain sooner.
- 4 If NatGeo hadn’t commissioned the assignment from Steve, he wouldn’t have spent ten months trying to get this photo.
- commission = pay or plan to pay for a predetermined project (especially art)
- ---
- I went into the building. = I entered the building.
- I’ll have a go at billiards. = I’ll try it. I’ll play one game.
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- TEST
- (Then go over the answers as a class and check each other’s tests.)
