One day some Great Beings came to a planet called Spherus Magna which was where all the Glatorian and Agori lived. They started making stuff, like Elemental Lords, Baterra and all sorts of stuff. One day energized protodermis was discovered in the planet and everyone started fighting over it, and it became 'The core war'. The Great Beings made a giant 40 million foot tall robot called Mata-Nui. Inside the robot were a bunch of islands, continents etc where Toa, Matoran, Rahi and others lived. Spherus Magna broke into 3 pieces, creating 2 moons; An ocean world called Aqua Magna, and a Jungle world called Bota Magna which orbited the remaining planet, which was then called Bara Magna. Mata-Nui took off into space to explore the universe and study the cultures of other worlds and how they solve conflicts. Inside Mata-Nui were the Matoran, workers and villagers. Toa, the protectors of the Matoran. The Turaga, which are what Toa become when they fulfill their destiny and give up their power. Makuta, which were Rahi makers who populated the Matoran Universe with Rahi and were led by Makuta Miserix, also by the way they weren't evil to start with. Some Makuta had personal Toa bodyguards, called Toa Hagah. Teridax (The Makuta from the 2001 story) had a team of Toa Hagah himself, Norik, Iruini, Gaaki, Pouks, Bomonga and Kualus. These guys called the Barraki also became warlords who ruled big areas and stuff but got taken to the Pit, a big underwater prison and got mutated by the waters and became horrific waterbreathing monsters. One day Teridax wanted to overthrow Mata-Nui and rule the universe so he betrated Miserix and took over the brotherhood of Makuta and send Miserix to a small island to imprison him, and all the other Makuta sided with Teridax. Teridax's Toa Hagah got suspicious and stormed the Makuta fortress, stealing the Avohkii, the Mask of Light.
They eventually got mutated into Rahaga by Roodaka. A whole bunch of years later, a creature called the Kanohi Dragon attacked Metru-Nui, a city populated by Matoran. 11 Toa arrived there and stopped the Dragon, and became a team called the Toa Mangai who were the protectors of Metru-Nui. Over on a far away island, a group of baddies called the Dark Hunters (led by the Shadowed One) sent a few Dark Hunters to Metru-Nui to force Turaga Dume to let them build a dark Hunter base there but he refused and the Toa Mangai drove them away. One day Teridax secretly kidnapped Turaga Dume and impersonated him as part of his big plan to rule the universe. He then sent most of the Toa on missions outside Metru-Nui where a Dark Hunter he hired killed them. Eventually only three were left - Lhikan, Nidhiki and Tuyet. Some time later some Matoran were being murdered and each had a tablet next to their bodies saying "Toa Tuyet" on them. Lhikan and Nidhiki went and asked her about it but she said she knew nothing. She told them that the Dark Hunters thought she had a powerful artifact called the Nui Stone, and they wanted to take it but she didn't have it. Some more Matoran were killed and Lhikan and Nidhiki got suspicious. Eventually Lhikan discovered that Tuyet did have the Nui Stone, and she then used it and fought Lhikan and Nidhiki, only to lose. Tuyet was imprisoned for her betrayal and a being named Botar took her to the Pit. Later a Dark Hunter called Lariska persuaded Nidhiki that if he worked with her, he could rule Metru Nui so he agreed. He made a trap for Lhikan, only to find Lhikan brought in hundreds more Toa who then drove the Dark Hunters and Nidhiki away. Nidhiki soon got mutated into a spider like being.
Lhikan then made some Toa stones and gave them to 6 Matoran - Vakama, Matau, Whenua, Nokama, Nuju and Onewa who then became the Toa Metru. Dume (teridax) put Mata-Nui into a coma and put the Matoran into pods which wiped their memory so he could awaken them as their savior. Vakama used the Mask of Time and the Toa Metru stopped him, and found an island called Mata-Nui. They then went back to Metru Nui to get the Matoran and bring them to the island, but the city was overrun by Visorak spiders which mutated the Toa into Toa Hordika. They met the Rahaga, and went looking for Keetongu, a rahi which would restore the Toa to their normal selves. Vakama joined the baddies but then became a goodie again, and the Toa took the Matoran pods to Mata-Nui, and gave up their power to awaken them which turned them into Turaga. Makuta then controlled the Rahi and used them to harass the Matoran for about 1 thousand years. Then the Toa Mata came to the island in canisters to save them. They found some masks and got golden ones, then they defeated Makuta. Then they defeated the Bohrok and became the Toa Nuva. Then they defeated the Bohrok Kal. The Turaga then upgraded the Matoran to make them stronger, more agile etc. Then Takua found the Avohkii (Which the Rahaga gave to vakama to hide) and him and Jaller did Lord of the Rings and got attacked by Rahkshi. Takua became Takanuva and defeated Makuta. The Matoran then went back to Metru-Nui.
The Turaga then revealed that Mata-Nui was dying, and six Matoran - Jaller, Hahli, Hewkii, Nuparu, Matoro and Kongu went on an epic quest to Voya Nui to find the Mask of Life. They went into the realm of Karzahni and got their masks taken and replaced with new ones. Then they got into Toa Canisters and escaped, but then they got stuck by some red lightning and became the Toa Inika. They fought the Piraka, then they fought Vezon, and then the Mask of Life went into the sea towards Mahri Nui and the pit. The mask transformed them into the Toa Mahri so they could breathe underwater and stuff, and they fought the Barraki, Hydraxon and all those guys for the Mask. A Maxilos robot (a guard of the Pit) got possessed by Makuta who then made Matoro revive the body of Toa Tuyet using his mask of reanimation, because Makuta wanted the Nui Stone which the pieces of were embedded into Tuyet's armor. Later, the Toa are in trouble and they need to cut the stone cord holding Voya Nui up so it can float back down to where it's supposed to be. Matoro puts on the Mask of Life and sacrifices himself to save his buddies and bring Mata-Nui back to life. Over in a place called Karda Nui which is in the center of the Matoran Universe, the Toa Nuva have a big sky battle with some Makuta using their adaptive armor to fly. They find the Av Matoran, the Matoran of Light who help them. Tahu, Onua and Gali go down into the swamp of secrets to find some keystones to open the Codrex and awaken Mata-Nui.
The Mask of Life created a body for itself (Toa Ignika) to help the Toa out. Meanwhile, Takanuva is on a crazy interdimensional quest to get to Karda Nui and warn the Toa about some energy storms. He eventually gets there and saves Gali. Toa Ignika gives up his body to awaken Mata Nui. The Toa find awesome vehicles and use those to escape Karda Nui and not get fried by the energy storms (which kills the Makuta in Karda Nui). They all go back to Metru-Nui and celebrate. Then they all hear Makuta's voice in the sky saying "I am everywhere" and they discover that when Mata-Nui awoke, Makuta took over his body. The Toa and everyone pretty much lost. Makuta launches Mata-Nui's mind out into space trapped in the Mask of Life. The Mask crash lands on Bara Magna, and creates a body for Mata-Nui. Mata-Nui meets the Glatorian and stuff and some things happen. He gets them to all be happy peace friends and unite their villages (parts of an old prototype for the Mata-Nui robot) and Mata-Nui notices that it looks like a body. They find this power source thing and Mata-Nui controls the other robot (which is smaller than the other one). Makuta (In the giant Mata-Nui robot body) comes to Bara Magna and they have a super massive giant robot battle, while the Toa and everyone fight Makuta's armies of heat vision Rahkshi and stuff on the ground. There's a giant war and Mata-Nui tries to unite the moons with Bara Magna to repair the planet. Eventually Bota Magna comes flying towards Bara Magna, and Mata Nui pushes Makuta into it, defeating him. He then unites the moons and the planet becomes whole again. He makes it all nice and nature-ey, and sort of dies and the Toa, Matoran, Turaga, Glatorian etc all live together happily ever after.
