- 2 independent, choice question - 15/45
- 3 integrated reading/listening/speaking, campus announcement and conversation - 30/60

- ---
- Task 5
- - Listen to a conversation about someone’s problem and two proposed solutions.
- - 20 seconds to prepare your response
- - 60 seconds to speak about the problem, the solutions, and your choice and reasons
- ---
- Listen to Oxford CD 3.24 (p. 320)
- What’s the problem: Her roommate makes a mess and doesn’t clean or help at all.
- What two solutions does the man suggest?
- - Refuse to do any of roommate’s chores (no dishes, no laundry, no cooking for her), she’ll eventually realize she needs to contribute
- but: woman is too nice
- - stay with the man for 2 weeks, leave a mess and don’t clean it, leave a note saying tired of cleaning and need brerak
- ---
- During the 20 seconds, you can write a “key-words-only” outline, basically the same as what you’d have for task 2:
- choice: S2
- reason 1: rm realize she needs to do something
- reason 2: woman can relax and avoid an argument
- (Remember, with choice questions one or both reasons can be disadvantages of the other choice.)
- ---
- You don’t need to note every detail of the conversation. Once you identify the problem, the rest of your notes can be like:
- S1:
- but:
- S2:
- but:
- ---
- “The students discuss two possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Describe the problem. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer, and explain why.”
- You can organize you rresponse like this:
- 1 Introduction/Summary: summarize the problem and list the two solutions they discuss
- 2 Topic/thesis statement: state your opinion about which solution is better
- 3 Lead-in: “I have two reasons for this choice.”
- 4 First reason
- 5 Detail/example
- 6 Second reason
- 7 Detail/example
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Record your responses to the ETS Guide questions.
- Listen. What was good or bad about each one?
- Timing: 20 seconds to summarize the problem and solutions and state your opinion
- 20 seconds to state the first reason and give supporting details or examples
- 20 seconds to state the second reason and give supporting details or examples
- ---
- Homework: if you want more feedback on your writing than a score and a sentence or two, send me a self-evaluation about what you think you did well or badly, particularly in comparison to previous writing you’ve done
