Hit the Reset Button

A light wind blew through the trees causing the leaves to rustle and make a soothing sound. Wind was not something Kouta was unaccustomed to, but the warmth of the sun actually made it pleasant. The difference in weather between the countries of Fire and Lightning was astounding, and he was still taking time to get used to it. When he had gone to a clothing store, he automatically looked for a warm jacket, but found none. It dawned on him that the temperature would probably make that rather uncomfortable. He had found some simple attire, a sleeveless dark green shirt and jeans. The shirt was one thing, but he wasn't ready for shorts yet. Unfortunately, he had still not managed to find a place that sold an eye patch, so the bandages over his eye would have to do. This ensemble and whatever money he had constituted the whole of his belongings. He was essentially starting over here.

In his new duds, Kouta walked through the streets of Konoha, exploring his new temporary home. Somehow or another he had wound up in the bazaar known as Sigmar Square. This was one of the first places he wound up after getting out of the prison. He hadn't spent a lot of time here, so this time he figured he could take a better look around. He had money to spend as well, and he needed a number of things. Clothes, lodging, food, and possibly weapons. He had managed at some point to pick up a map of Sigmar Square with a list of shops, and now seemed like a good time to take a look at it. He walked to a wooden bench nearby and sat down, taking out the map. He began to look it over, seeing what shops he might wish to visit.

"This map could use some pictures..."

Kaza had gone... somewhere and Yuii wasn't quite sure how she had lost him. Well, she knew, he had kept walking when she had noticed a cake shop and so like many other times in her life Yuii had been left behind. It hadn't really bothered her though, she had been planning to make a break for it at some point that day. It was just annoying that she wasn't really sure of the direction their Inn was now, nor did she know where to go for anything else. Wisp had remembered the name of the place they were staying but not much more, her excuse was Konoha had changed in the last hundred years of so.

Somehow she ended up in the square, which was fine because she needed some supplies but the milling crowd was intense. The little cloud genin wobbled from foot to foot, vainly trying to see around  people that bustled by. She tried to stock along the walls of the shops like she would at home and found that occupied by children in her own or worse predicaments, it just wasn't good.

Dizzy and overwhelmed she searched out a quieter place to think on what she was going to do. Then she saw him, a man with a map. A map might help her, maybe it would have those bits of important information she was looking for. She wasn't the very best at reading but that was what the man with the map was for, surely he would be kind enough to sound out words for her.

With that thought in mind she basically skipped over the the bench where the man sat and perched not on the bench seat but on the back of it. Doing her best to not be obvious she tried to peek over his shoulder to get a look at the map. It was a confusing piece of work, she didn't understand it at all and she couldn't even pick out where they were. Ugh this was terrible, it really needed-

...pictures. Blinking owlishly a moment she wondered if he had read her mind. "I like pictures." Yuii agreed out loud, sitting back with perfect balance to stare at him though her blue hair with bright blue eyes. She was obviously foreign in her long sleeve shirt, leggings, shirt and opened jacket, never mind the cloud headband around her neck. "Um, I can't even find the 'you are here' dot."

Moments after he spoke to himself about the map's lack of pictures, an innocent and honest sounding voice came from behind his head. To have gotten up there without him noticing, it was enough to convince him that she was a ninja... if she wasn't so young. He looked her up and down wondering if perhaps it was an illusion but caught no signs of such deception. What his eyes did find was the Cloud-nin's headband around her neck.

A Cloud shinobi was sitting there, casually talking to him, a missing-nin from Cloud. Of course, there was no way she could know who he was, thankfully. She was too young to be anything more than an Academy Student... but she had a headband. 'Genin, then,' he thought, trying to be logical. Student or Genin, it was unlikely they had met before. Even if she had a picture for reference, he looked different than when he left.

The child continued to talk to him about his map, and Kouta was fairly convinced that she wasn't intending to fight him, or else she would have taken the opportunity already. He had received warning from his "handler" that Cloud-nins had recently come to Leaf, but he hadn't expected to find one the day after. She seemed harmless, but Kouta knew it was unlikely a young girl like her was traveling alone; however, it would also be unlikely that she would be sent on a hunting mission, so, there was probably nothing to worry about.

This logical thinking took about 5 seconds in Kouta's mind, during which he looked from the child back to his map. What was it she said? A 'you are here' dot? He chuckled quietly, shaking his head.

"If it's a portable map, it would be hard for the cartographer to know where to put that dot, wouldn't it?" he said, angling his head to face her again. He wondered if she understood what he meant. He had no experience with kids, even if he did have a sister near her age. They had never lived together. He thought about how he should act. What did she want?! It was so awkward!!! What did people usually do when a child they didn't know walked up to them?

"Are you... uh... lost?" he asked. Could he help her even if she was?

Yuii's face scrunched up in confusion at his answer and you could literally see the wheels turning in her head as she tried to pick through the words to find some meaning. Portable meant it moved, she thought but she didn't understand at all what a cart-o-grapher was and she guessed that was probably important. Did that mean there was a little man in a cart that followed the map around then up dots on it when you went to look at it?

Yuii glanced around herself quickly, whipping her pigtails back and forth as she did so. Nope, no little man with a cart, well that explained it but he could have used smaller words. "he'd put it where we are but I guess he has to catch up first," Yuii answered finally, her voice ever so confident that she had figured out this riddle.

She stopped and stared at him a long moment, again thinking visibly as she looked for the answer to his question. Was she lost? Well, kind of, she was missing Kaza and the hotel but she kind of knew where she was. She wasn't wandering in a scary forest or anything so then she wasn't so much lost as misplaced. Misplaced, she liked that word.

"I've been misplaced," Yuii answered, grinning wide at him because she could use some big words too. She hopped down from the back of the bench to the seat and stared again, "You kind talk funny, but so do I, do you like ice cream? You can buy me ice cream right? Or cake? I really like cake. Hey do you know where the prison is? Uhm, um, do you think they have that frozen ice stuff with the syrup too? I like that... Um, oh! I'm Yuii~" No last name.

Kouta could see by looking at the child that she did not understand what he said. Her words confirmed it. He briefly considered teach her what a cartographer was, but he dismissed the idea. She probably had a sensei somewhere to do that. She responded to his second question seeming happy about it for some reason.

'Misplaced? Is she an item?' he wondered, resisting laughing since she seemed so proud of her word choice. Before he could say anything further on the subject, Yuii jumped down on the bench next to him ant sat down. She mentioned his manner of talking, which brought up something interesting in his mind. Even if only slightly, he probably sounded different from the Leaf-nins, considering he was a former resident of her village.

There was no need to offer an excuse as she quickly derailed the topic before it had really gone anywhere, now asking about sweets. A lot. When she finished finally, Kouta was simply staring, bewildered, and trying to process all of the questions that had been strung together. Something about buying food and prison. Considering he was budgeting his money carefully since he needed to start over in this village, extra spending was out of the question.

"Uh... first of all, no, I'm not going to buy you anything. I know where the prison is, but now how to get to it, though I don't know what that has to do with anything..." he said, trying to catch up with the conversation before it got away again. What else did she say? 'Oh right, her name,' he recalled. Naturally, he would give his.

"I'm Ko-"

He stopped short. His name was the name of a missing-nin. Even if she didn't know it, there was the possibility of her speaking to another Cloud-nin and telling them that she met a Kouta. Even if it was unlikely, it would be better to make up a name. He coughed to stall as he thought of another name. Only one came to mind that started with Ko.

"Kokoro," he said with a super serious face, somewhat scary even. 'Wait a minute... that's a girl's name...' he realized suddenly. That wouldn't do. His alias could not be a girl's name.

"Heh heh heh, I mean... Ryouta. I was just kidding," he corrected himself. 'Damn, that was suspicious sounding,' he thought, slapping his palm to his face. (facepalm) Change the subject...

"On second thought, how about I get you that ice cream?"

Yuii's squirmed around in her seat, half paying attention to his answers and half distracted by the people passing around them. She was staring at a man with strange metal in his face when she realized he was actually answering her, which was strange because most people didn't at first. She didn't know why, Wisp said her questions were uncomfortable but she wasn't really sure what that was supposed to mean. They weren't itchy questions, they were just questions.

He wasn't going to but her ice cream, which sucked because it was really hot and she would have liked some. Her face fell a little but besides a bit of red in her cheeks she did a good job of hiding she was upset about that. Besides, she was distracted by the more important answers, in particular-

"Where is it!? I heard its really, uhm, cool and... no that's not what I meant just where is it? "she trailed off awkwardly, much the same way he did when giving his name. There was a second of awkward silence which he was kind enough to break by offering ice cream and she saw it for what it was but was fine with that. So long as he didn't make a big deal about her asking about the jail, and bought ice cream, Yuii wouldn't ask why he momentarily forgot his own name then tried to give her a girls name. There were any number of reasons anyhow, many even that explained was he made that funny R sound common in Kumogakure.

"I really like ice cream, I like cake more though, do they have ice cream cakes of ice cream with cake? or, oh, ice cream flavoured like cake! Do they have that? I like when the have little spoons too, do you think they have little spoons... do you even know where to get ice cream?" she answered with a bright smile, genuinely excited about free sweets. Traveling had meant limited sugar and she was dying for some now. She was feeling kind of slow and tired...

Yeh, this was Yuii sluggish.

Kouta couldn't help but wonder what the girl's fascination with the prison was. It wasn't exactly a pleasant place. Even if he wanted to go, the prison was hidden well. Upon leaving, he had to follow someone to make his way out of the forest that housed it. He knew where it was, but he wasn't going back. Luckily, the thought of ice cream was apparently enough to occupy Yuii's mind for now.

She spouted off another series of thoughts and questions too quickly for Kouta to keep up with answering them. Instead, he focused on the last thing she said. It was true, he didn't know where they would get ice cream. He had only been (free) here for one day. That was another issue. If he was to mascaraed as a Leaf-nin, he should know his way around much better. Time to improvise.

"Well, of course I know! Let's go!" he said, standing up confidently. He took a brief look around, hoping to find an ice cream shop in the immediate area. No such luck. He started to walk, assuming she would follow if she really wanted ice cream. If she didn't... that would solve the problem even more quickly. Assuming she did, he kept on walking, glancing stealthily around with only his eyes, trying to find a sweet shop while walking as if he knew where he was going. He needed to do some more diversion.

"So, what brings you to... ...our village? I assume you are not alone?" he asked casually, aside from the small hesitation in referring to the village possessively. It was a question that wouldn't be suspicious for a Leaf-nin, but actually he wanted to know how many Cloud-nins he needed to avoid in the village. He had no ill-will towards them, but it wouldn't be good for anybody if he was found out.

With a glance in the direction of an ice cream cake shop Yuii had spotted earlier she followed the man in the opposite direction. He was weird, and Wisp said he was suspicious too. She even mumbled something about keeping his story straight but really wouldn't explain. Yuii could only guess poking at these things would get her what she wanted. The point was, he didn't know, because he was pulling her off the wrong direction.

"Haha very funny! The ice cream cake shop is that way!" She squealed, breaking into a wide grin, "You were trying to trick me weren't you! I bet there is celery that way! I'm allergic to celery.... and boys!" Yuii smiled good naturedly but there was a glint of knowing in her eyes, she knew he hadn't been playing.

Curiouser and curiouser his question was off but he was all off so maybe that was just him? She was faster to answer, already knowing how she was going to deal with questions."I'm going to break my brother out of jail!" Yuii announced, a great big grin on her face. She held it for a bout five seconds before breaking into laughter and skipping on a bit ahead, "Just kidding! Kaza-sensei is here for medical stuff and then we're going to Mist to see my big sister!" She called behind her shoulder. The crowd was still busy though so she didn't go too far just in case he tried to escape before getting her cake.

"I like scary stuff though, like prisons and grave places and stuff. Lots of scary goulies in those places and I they say they're even haunted!" They were, she knew that much about places were people brought to suffer, die, or rest. Prisons always had a scary grave yard for the men that didn't have families that wanted to deal with them, those were filled with very angry goulies. The worst were the innocent ones, ghosts tended not to lie because they had nothing to lose and guilt twisted people.

That was what made shinobi graveyards scary too.

"Whats your favorite kind of icecream? I like them all but cake is the best. Mmmm chocolate cake or spice cake or or angel food cake is the bestest!"

Of course, Kouta would be going in the wrong direction. She already knew where the shop was, only making him look more suspicious. 'Figures she'd know in advance where it was...' he thought, masking his annoyance. He turned back to her smiling an awkward smile.

"Haha, you got me! No fooling you," he said, scratching his head sheepishly. This was getting out of hand. By now, getting a mask had been bumped up to his top priority after getting out of this. The Hashigaki ANBU from before had given him a crystal which somehow altered his voice. From now on, he would be using that to mask his accent, but of course it would be far too obvious to use it now.

He could just leave, but little Yuii was so sweet and innocent and he couldn't bring himself to ditch her without delivering the promised ice cream. She was also a bit... strange. First she had asked about the prison, now she was making a joke about breaking somebody out. She moved on from that to revealing the name of her partner here in Leaf. One person, named Kaza. Presumably this person was a Jounin ranked Med-nin, since any lower than that would still have a lot to learn at home. Most importantly, there were just the two of them. Kouta would verify this with the ANBU later.

Finally, she returned back to the topic of the prison. Why was she so fascinated with it? Maybe it was infamous... he certainly hadn't enjoyed his stay there with the creepy sounds coming from the fourth floor and the chakra limiters. Even when he was able to leave, they made him wear a blindfold as to deny him knowledge of the path back, as if he would ever try to go. The whole place seemed shrouded in mystery. In this light, he supposed he could see why it might be an interesting place to speculate about.

Well anyway, back to the ice cream.

"Uh, I dunno, rocky road? As for cake... red velvet is the best, with good cream cheese icing... mmmm....." he said, the thought of the red velvet cake actually occupying his mind for a few moments. Damn it all, now he wanted red velvet cake. Luckily they were now right outside the shop, and it seemed that they sold a large variety of sweets. Scanning the windows, he spotted his target. Delicious, beautiful cake. It would be his. He walked in to the store, getting in line behind a few other customers and looked down at the short one that was accompanying him.

"Alright kid, what do you want? Your limit is one slice of cake or two scoops of ice cream," he said, being firm on the limit. His funds had other destinations than buying copious amounts of confectioneries... aside from one particular item.

Yuii grinned wide, nodding her head at his choice of favorites. It was kind of a girlie choice, something reserved more for weddings her sister had said, but really yummy none the less. On the few occasions she had gotten to have it she had not regretted it. "Maybe they have that too!" she chirped energetically, genuinely amused to see someone excited about cake. Adults were funny like that, you had to remind them of how good cake was sometimes before they would finally get excited.

Yuii, being very small and unobtrusive managed to sneak past the waiting patrons to peer at the cakes and ice creams while her new friend stood in line. They had a lot of cake but even more ice cream to choose from and with all the bright colours and flavours she was feeling overwhelmed by it all. From the display in the window she had known what she wanted but now Yuii wasn't quite sure. There were some here she couldn't remember hearing about and others that she would have never dreamed up; all in all quite amazing.

Ryouta said then that she could only have one take or two scoops of ice cream and it struck her that she would need to be very careful in how she chose. She didn't want to choose something new and find out it tasted awful; as ice creams sometimes could, but she wondered is she would ever pass by some of these again. Time was running out, marked by the shortening line, and slowly she narrowed her choices down. Then she glanced at the prices, calculated in her head how much another scoop would cost and how much cheaper her next pair of socks would need to be and decided.

"I'm going to have three! The really red one, it's pretty, the one with green and purple in it and the brown gooey one!" Yuii announced, digging in her pocket until she found the extra 200yen in would cost to get that extra scoop. The workers behind the counter looked amused but an child excited about ice cream was good for business. "Is that okay Ryouta-kun?"

Kouta removed his wallet from a back pocket while the line moved up a bit more. For the most part the shop was filled with children and their parents. Thankfully he was young enough that there would be no misconceptions. As they came up to the counter, Kouta looked to Yuii to see if she had made up her mind. Luckily she had, listing three different flavors. Kouta was about to object when he noticed her reaching in to her pocket for the extra money. A few of the people around looked at him accusingly. How could he make the poor young girl pay for her own ice cream? No Leaf-nin would do such a thing!

'Tch! Damn people, mind your own business!' he thought irritably as he put his money on the counter, holding a hand up to stop Yuii.

"Well, you heard her..." he said solemnly, staring at the money he had put on the counter. It was enough to buy her extra scoops. It took a few moments for the man to prepare her ice cream, but once he was done he handed her a delicious looking cone with three perfectly shaped scoops of ice cream, extra large for the adorable young girl. Cuteness had its benefits.

The man gave Kouta the small amount of change left over and Kouta pocketed it, thinking something about overpriced ice cream as he did so. Turning towards the door, he looked down at Yuii, hoping she was at least pleased.

"C'mon, let's get out of the way. Is it good?"

Yuii's eyes grew large as the ice cream was handed off to her and she was extra careful in keeping it balanced. bad things had happened to other ice cream cones in the past for her poor diligence. "Thank-you," she said, drawing her breath in excitedly.

Until, she noticed, "You forgot to get you cake!" Yuii chirped, her eyebrows folding together sadly. She gave him a good long stair then, displaying what was probably the innate skill of a shinobi child, balance her ice cream into one hand while she reached into her pocket and took out her extra money. Why? because it wasn't fun to eat ice cream along and Ryouta had looked so happy thinking about his cake.

Luckily the line had died down a little, not that any sort of line would have stopped Yuii. She walked right through them all and up to the counter, waving her arms until someone paid attention to her. "'Scuse me! My Nii-chan forgot to get his cake! He wanted red velvet with... uhm... oh yeh! Cream cheese please! He forgets things a lot!" Yuii had more than enough for a piece of cake, she had more than enough for a few pieces of cake, it was just her budgeting from now until she went home to Kumogakure that was a worry.

She felt a ghostly hand pat her shoulder and she knew she had done well.

The adult behind the counter looked ready to argue but, it was true, being cute did have its advantages. With a sigh the one worker went about getting her the cake while the rest continued to deal with the line, just like that. She put her extra money in the tip jar, because that seemed right and it wasn't long before Yuii came back in a rush with a small box with a piece of cake inside.

"Tah dah, don't say no!" she said, holding up the cake box. Her icecream was already melting on her hand so he was better off taking it so she could focus on eating it.

Kouta smiled despite himself when he saw Yuii's excitement over her ice cream. When she mentioned his lack of cake, he looked surprised. He had forgotten about it after all. It was disappointing, but he didn't want to get back in line. He was about to say not to worry about it when she turned and walked back to the counter. He went to follow her, but got a few nasty stares from the people in line. He didn't have enough cute factor to skip people. Sighing he backed off, waiting by the door, thinking she had gone to get napkins or something.

When she returned with a cake box, he wasn't sure what to say. He was, in fact, about to say no when she told him not to. It shut him up long enough to reconsider. It almost seemed to defeat the purpose of him buying ice cream for her, but on the other hand his mother always told him it was rude to refuse a gift. She had already bought it, anyway, and he did really want that cake after all. Taking the box from her, he smiled and patted her once on the head.

"Thank you, Yuii-chan. You're a sweet girl," he said before turning to hold the door open for her, "anyway, let's get a bench. Wouldn't want to risk dropping these, now would we?" He followed her out the door and then spotted a bench right outside the shop for customers. He pointed it out and then walked over, taking a seat. Opening the cake box, he could smell just how sweet it was. There was a fork inside, so without further adieu, he picked it up, sliced a bit of cake and popped it in his mouth. The cake was goddamn delicious. It was rich, probably too much so for some people, but Kouta loved it. Smiling uncharacteristically wide, he turned to look at Yuii and ask what he tried to earlier.

"Well? Good?"

"That's cause I only eat sweets," she said with a toothy grin. If that were true you'd almost expect her teeth to be rotted out but from the front they looked just perfect. Overall she was happy he was happy.

Yuii couldn't walk and eat ice cream at the same time but neither could she stop eating the it or stop walking. Instead she was would take a few steps forward then as her mouth reached for the ice cream her feet would stop and so she would stand in the way of anything or anyone as she licked at whatever offending drip of cream had dribbled its way onto her fingers. When she was satisfied that nothing more would drip she would look up and search around for Routa then start after him again; only to repeat the entire process again as the sun did its work. luckily the bench wasn't far from the door and soon enough she had herself parked beside her new friend.

He seemed to really like his cake and Yuii stopped eating her own ice cream to watch him at it. It really was nice to buy other people things, maybe she would do it more often?

Probably not.

More cream on her hand reminded her to eat her own ice cream and with a giggle she went about trying to clean up the mess of it on her hands. "Nyah, Nyah I'm a kitty." She mewled out cutely, licking at some chocolate at the back of her hand. "It's super yummy! I'd let you try but I'm allergic to boys!"

Kouta chuckled as she added the super adjective and repeated something from before.

"Yeah, you said so earlier. A lot of women would tell you that's a good stance to take for your whole life," he said, assuming she was just being cute... which she was doing even if it wasn't intentional. He scooped another bite of cake in to his mouth and repressed an audible mmm. Then he realized he had already eaten the whole thing. For a fraction of a second he looked like he might cry, but then his expression returned to normal quickly. He tossed the waste in to the trash next to the bench and leaned back, resting his forearms on the rear of the bench. He removed the map from his jacket and held it above his face so he could look over it again.

"Hmmm.... where are you staying? If you were separated from your sensei, he might look there first."


"That's what my Ni--chan says. She doesn't really like boys, except Ren-nii and Jo-nii." Yuii answered, kicking her legs. She bit a fair chunk from her ice cream thoughtfully then shrugged to herself, "I think shes just a'scared of them cause they can be mean and kind of smelly. They always fight too and they call me bad names." Well Kaiji hadn't but Yuii got a feeling of sameness and maturity from him that made him seem friendly. Otherwise most boys were just big bullies.

"We're going to go see my Nii-chan soon, after being here," she added, unaware she had said that much earlier too. Yuii loved her sister who had played mother, father, sibling and friend to he. She was so excited to go and see her soon, even if she had sent Yuii away. It had been awhile and Yuii was starting to forget the details of her sister's face now which frightened her. Maybe if she didn't see her soon Yuii would forget she even had a sister; that would be just awful. "We'll go to the Zoo and eat cake and, and she'll make me a new coat and it will be super fun." She added at the last, her mind likely making the visit seem like an adventure.

"Neh, Ryouta-kun how come you need a map in your own village?" Yuii asked, peering at him curiously. The wheels in her brain turned visibly and she thought her own question over but her train of thought was obviously fairly innocent. Or was it? "Can I see your map? Can you tell me how it works?"

Kouta listened to her plan, though to him it didn't really mean much. There were a lot of names that meant nothing to him, and the talk about her sister got him thinking about his own sister. Like Yuii and hers, Kouta hadn't seen his little sister in a long time. He wondered, if they were all to move here, if he and his sister would do things like this, or like Yuii was describing.

His train of thought was interrupted by an uncomfortable question. By now, Kouta was prepared for this and not caught off-guard. He needed the map in order to find the stores he needed. Truthfully, he had wanted to buy a lot of things, but instead he narrowed it down to food. Why would he need a map if he was a Leaf-nin? Well...

"A friend of mine recommended a particular brand of instant ramen that was only sold at this one grocery store. I usually head to a closer store, and I'm not familiar with the shopping in this square, so I was hoping to find it on this map. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the store, so I've given up," he said, showing the map to Yuii as per request. It was fairly simple to understand, though there were, irritatingly, no pictures. He pointed to things on the map as he explained.

"The yellow lines are roads of this area. You can see on either side of the lines are boxes that represent buildings. They all have names on them so you know which is which. You can see the main square up here. Here, you can have this," he explained, moving his finger across the map as he spoke about a particular aspect of it. As he did this, he actually came to understand where he really was. He noticed the name of the store they had just visited, and now had a fair grasp of which way he needed to go. He still had much to do, so it was about time he get back to work. He folded the map up a bit and set it on the bench between him and Yuii.

"Here, you can keep it. I have to go now, Yuii, enjoy the rest of your ice cream, and try to look for your friend, OK? Be good," he said, standing up and reaching out to pat her on the head. He waited a moment for her to respond before walking off in the direction of a grocery store he had spotted on the map.
