- The aesthir reacted immediately, diving down toward the falling body. It had been trained to do so, to rescue a fallen rider, but in fulfilling the task, it brought itself closer to the ground and its attackers. Another hail of arrows split the air around them. Jodah cursed and wrapped his mind around a particular spell. Then he flung himself off the diving aesthir into the void.
- He cast the spell as he leapt, filling the space around him with wind, a wind strong enough to keep him aloft and to deflect all but the most accurate of the arrows. Already, lit by the fading sun, he was an ideal target, and a sheaf of quarrels danced around him, knocked aside by the spiraling winds.

- Jodah wanted to find out more, but for now, he was a target. Despite himself, he willed himself forward, away from the flicker of golden armor and (more importantly) the arrows, and the whirlwind spell about him shoved him toward the trading post.
- Jodah crested the wall, a few last arrows spiraling around him. He saw that the aesthir with Jaya and the princess had touched down and was now surrounded by Balduvians. Jodah set himself down next to them, his hands open and empty in peace.
