  1. Staple advice for new runners:
  2.
  3. 1. Press confirm when you die to speed up death animations. Confirm is whatever button you use to progress through the menu (A on Xbox/switch pro, x on ds4, c by default on keyboard etc. Keyboard can bind menu confirm in the control settings)
  4.
  5. 2. turn off screenshake (options -> screenshake effects -> off) screenshake, while a cool effect casually, is extremely detrimental for visibility and attention to detail when speedrunning. Disabling it also makes for a much better viewing experience as well. You are also going to want to turn on photosensitivity mode for similar reasons (also located in the options)
  6.
  7. 3. You can make all of the bubbles (in ridge, temple, and summit) trigger faster by pressing dash once you are already in the bubble, you don’t need to wait for the bubble to move on its own.
  8.
  9. 4. Add a second jump button in a location that you will be able to press it in quick succession with your first one. This is important for many reasons including fast climbing, cornerboosts, and everyone’s favorite: spike jumps.
  10.
  11. 5. If you are having a problem with a specific room, you have one of two options for reaching out for help:
  12. - referencing programmatics new any% tutorial for what he says about the room.
  13. - Asking about it in #speedrun-help channel in the celeste discord (posting a picture of the room and describing some of the problems you are having will make it easier for speedrun helpers to assist you)
  14.
  15. 6. If you are playing 5A, learn search skip! This saves over a minute when starting out and isn't too hard to learn. However, don't be afraid to look into the 5B route early on: while a bit more difficult at first, 5B can save time at all levels with proper practice, and doesn't require big skips such as bubsdrop to save time over 5A. If you're not comfortable doing it in runs it's also completely fine to just practice it on the side while doing 5A in runs, as this will still help in the long run if you plan on speedrunning the game for a while.
  16.
  17. 7. Binding a demo/crouch dash button as soon as you can will be beneficial, even if you don’t plan on using it much right away. A quick note that demo binds are not cheating, and are not just allowed but even encouraged by the mods of the leaderboards. A guide to binding a demo button is available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hkmQ-tnZak_9DhX5nxu_TosnQON3l53-dFjW7WuNEGY. Note that currently this is only available on PC and Switch, as patch 1.4 has not reached Xbox/PS4: this should hopefully change in the future.

  19. 8. The best and most efficient way to improve is to practice smaller segments of the game with a lot of repetition. This will help you improve your overall movement and comfort level with the game’s speed tech. However, making sure you’re having fun is by far the most important part. If you enjoy just doing full runs, feel free to do that! Though I would strongly recommend focused practice on the sections of the games that give you the most trouble.
