但吾二郎神，镇守在灌口山。我前年在天津桥头，戏弄传言玉女。玉帝大怒，卜绝我香火。即得南海佛祖劝勉，乞我来灌口山镇守，做一庇佑菩萨。佛祖有话叮咛，若遇道德圣僧，修归正果，以赎前罪。只事且觅一边。我拙时思食生人肉，我不免落山摄人。

However, I, Erlang Shen, stand guard at Guankou Mountain. The year before the last, at the Tianjin bridge, I was jested and teased the Jade Maiden. The Jade Emperor was angry, and decreed the cessation of my incense offerings. It was only through the persuasion and guidance of the Buddha of the South Sea that I was sent to guard Guankou Mountain, taking on the role of a protective Bodhisattva. The Buddha admonished me with these words: should I encounter a virtuous and holy monk, I must commit to cultivating the proper path to redeem my past sins. For now, I linger here. Yet in my folly, I crave the flesh of living humans. I could not help but descend to seize someone.
