  1. I'm one of the few who are still waiting for their own copy of Four Souls to arrive. I know that nobody of my friends want to play the game... So I'm stucked with the single player option. The thing is that we don't have a single player rule set yet and it is pretty unlikely that we will ever get an official one.
  2. So I thought of a possible single player variant myself. This includes all the problems + solutions, rules based on those solutions and a possible plan how each turn could work.
  3. Problems and solutions
  4. 1. There are a lot of card effects which need other player to work. Eg. “steal a loot card from another player”, “kill another player”, “steal an item from another player” etc.
  5. In order to solve this you need to remove each card, which need other players to work (see list here). Any other card effect, which needs a random player to work, would target you.
  6.
  7. 2. Lack of tension and cards which change your/a dice roll.
  8. Let me introduce you to the ‘attack roll’ in order to solve this problem. The attack roll is an additional dice roll (after you drew a loot card at the start of your turn), which determines if you have to attack a monster/boss.
  9.
  10. 1-3 you have to attack a monster/boss in this turn.
  11.
  12. 4-6 you may attack a monster/boss in this turn.
  13.
  14. This dice roll can be influenced by any of your items. This way dice roll changing items have a purpose again and the fact that you could be forced to attack a monster/boss brings back the tension. Why does it bring back the tension? Well that brings me to the next problem
  15.
  16. 3. Getting killed by a card effect or by a monster/boss. The normal game handles this in a good way, If you get killed you lose some cards, but on your next turn you are back in the game. What is fun and fair in a multiplayer is in my opinion quite boring. You would only play until your win.
  17.
  18. One way to makes things more interesting and to create tension is the introduction of a losing condition. Please hear me out before you kill me. It is common in a single player card game to have such a condition. Look at Patience for example.
  19. In this version of a single player mode you would lose if you get killed and you have no souls. The souls are basically your life points. Of course you could say: “Very well, then I just wait with an attack until I’m strong enough”, but that would be boring. That is the point where the additional dice roll comes into play! Since this could force you to attack you always have a chance to be killed. Like in the original game you get screwed by the RNG. This helps to bring a lot of tension into the early game and keeps the late game interesting. The death penalty would be a soul, a loot card and three coins.
  20.
  21. Okay lets say this works, then a single player game would look like this:
  22. [Basic Layout]( )
  23. Additional rules:
  24. 1. Remove all cards which need another player to work from the decks.
  25. 2. Each card which references to a random player targets you instead.
  26. 3. Each turn you have to roll a dice which decides if you have to attack a monster/boss or not. If you don’t have to attack you can always choose to attack a monster/boss.
  27. 4. The dice roll can effected by any card effects.
  28. 5. If you die and you have no souls, then you will lose the game.
  29. 6. If you lose the game, then you will have to put all the used cards back in the decks.
  30. 7. The game ends if you die ( and you have no souls) or you collect four souls
  31. How to play:
  32. First turn:
  33. 1. Follow rule 1.
  34. 2. Place two item and two monster cards in their respective place.
  35. 3. Choose your character card or take one with your eyes closed.
  36. 4. Draw 3 loot cards and gain 3 coins.
  37. 5. Follow rule 3 and 4
  38. 6. Do one or more of the following: (attack a monster card, play a loot card, activate the effect of your character or his eternal item, activate an item effect, buy a shop item (if possible), do nothing (if possible)).
  39. 7. After you attack or choose to not attack a monster finish your turn (end of the first turn).
  40. Every other turn:
  41. 1. At the start of each turn heal every monster/boss and yourself.
  42. 2. Draw a loot card.
  43. 3. Follow rule 3 and 4.
  44. 4. Do one or more of the following: (attack a monster card, play a loot card, activate the effect of your character or his eternal item, activate an item effect, buy a shop item (if possible), do nothing (if possible)).
  45. 5. After you attack or choose to not attack a monster finish your turn (end of the first turn).
  46. Repeat those steps until you die (and have no souls) or you collect four souls.
  47.
  48. So that’s it. This is my take on the single player mode of Four Souls. It is basically a repost of this [comment]( ). If you don’t like it check out u/MCDanGaming25 version of it!
  49. If you have any addition, tested it for yourself or have a complete other take on the single player mode feel free to say your opinion. If we all work together, then we will make a great community single player mode!
