HSS-111 LECTURE NOTES: TRANSLATED TO ENGLISH THROUGH Jrooken-Yillvonese ABOUT THE PICTURES OF HUMANS.

Homo sapiens can be disturbing creatures for some students, so here's a set of pictures to remind you all that humans are just like any other sophont: uniquely familiar. Some of their traits may seem mystifying, some may seem downright Jrooken-like. Here goes. Oh, and note that these pictures may be hue-adjusted for Jrooken eyes. These images come from Earth-based cameras for human eyes.

1: A female human watches the camera, wearing clothing built from the skin and feathers of one of Earth's natural flying animals.

2: Two female humans on a walkway beside a road, holding foot-powered board vehicles. This is often more for recreation than to be a perfect method of transportation. Each board is decorated. On the right is a picture of a human skull. The right human is happy: as can be seen by the open mouth, up-turned lip corners, and wide-open eyes.

3: Six young human females with orange hair stand in front of "horses," a major type of a beast of burden.

4: Doz female humans, all of which are natural philosphers of various kinds. All of which are from different human cultures--and if it surprises you that humans have more than one culture, you really needed to take the prereq class--and many of which are from different parts of the planet.

5: A female human, wow there are a lot of females on this list, with a rare skin pigmentation disorder which makes her spotted and splotched. We don't know anything about her, but we can imagine she is ridiculed for this. Human societies can be brutal to imperfection as often as they can cherish it.

6: Male law enforcement officers eating their dinner: a sandwich called a "Grilled Cheese." This is made of a thin layer of bread filled with a lactose-rich sauce called "Queso." They are involved in stopping a protest.

7: An infant male human sitting on a bench outside during Earth's fall.

8: A female human space traveler in a mock-up space helmet. Note that this is a photoshoot, not an actual picture from space with actual space technology. Chapter 9 of this class will briefly discuss the history of human space exploration, and we can get into this very interesting subject.

9: A human holding bread (left) and a glass bottle of cattle milk. Cattle are a domesticated animal bred for their meat and their lactose-rich milk, which simulates the milk produced by human females during the period after pregnancy. We shall learn about pregnancy and milk in more detail in Chapter 2, but suffice it to say that it's not very appetizing stuff to a Jrooken.

11: A young female human watches cattle (not pictured) during late fall or winter.

12: A human male surgeon monitors his human male patient's vitals after the transplant of a heart. To the right, his assistant is asleep in the corner.

13: The sons of dead human male soldiers pose to resemble the final photograph taken of their fathers.

14: A young adult male human upon being contracted into a sporting ritual.

15: It took a lot of research to figure this one out. Apparently the head-dresses are made from the hair of their dead ancestors.

16: A fan of a particularly jarring sort of music which loosely translates as Massive Iron. The clothing is ritualistic, and represents the often intentionally hard nature of this noise.

17: A human male lawyer (right) and his younger female assistant (left)

18: A human female (left) spending time with her pet Dog. The dog is being Jrookenly euthanized. The scrunched face and the frowned lips on the left human indicate her sorrow at her pet's final moments. The Dog appears to be happy at least.

19: A human with face painted to resemble a white skull.

20: A human male military officer, responsible for preventing a nuclear war on Earth.

21: The queen (right) of one of the last remaining monarchies of Earth smiles in happiness at the sight of her well dressed partner.

22: That's a pretty "bad ass" hat.

23: A presumably monogamous couple, each member of which seems very old, engaging in affectionate behavior.

24: A man (left) who had intentionally poisoned himself for the pleasure of the poisonous effect, is being pulled at by his son.

25: A young human using a rock as a toy camera.

26: A bread saleswoman. (Bread is a major part of Earth cuisine throughout many cultures)

27: An approximately 6 orbit old girl (still a child) granted divorce from her abusive and presumably forced husband. An infant human stands beside her.

28: A human male on a train waves at his brother through the border of a warring island. The man in the foreground is crying, a sign of grief in humans.

29: A human man walks with his son through the street after he and his army retook the region from terrorists.

30: A human female in fancy outfits, reminiscent of Uirikobe Ceremonial Scarves, but much less violent.

31: A human male sits on a rock and plays a musical instrument, with a small herbivore resting on his hat, near the ocean.

32: A female in a hospital who has just given a live birth to her child. The subtlety of the emotions here are something which can only be learned through years of exposure to humans, even though they themselves know facial expressions innately.

33: A child sleeping with a large herbivore.

34: An old male holding a combustible and poisonous drug, sitting next to his pet tiger.

35: A female human working at a human restaraunt. The text on her shirt literally translates as "Fresh Cookings of France," which more accurately translates as "Fresh Potato Strips." A Potato is an edible, starchy plant root. While potatoes can be nutritious, Potato Strips are cooked in fat and are of course not so healthy. But due to their satisfying taste, they are eaten up. Sound familiar? An awful lot like Ruma Balls.

36: A princess from the same monarchy as before, shakes hands (a common gesture of greetings in some human cultures) with a diseased patient without wearing gloves. While the disease doesn't get transmitted through touch, the disease AIDS had a taboo related to it, and this moment was a profound ritual of the taboo beginning to be dissolved.

37: A democratic president (left) meets with an ambassador from another nation (right). These are examples of different cultures, and yet they can still find the potential to get along.

38: A young human uses a computer tablet to play games while his mother uses combustible drugs with her friend.

39: A human female.

40: Two humans dance.


As you can see, there are many similarities. Sometimes humans can seem like barbaric folks, but this class is primarily to help dissuade you all of the myths and legends which just don't hold true. As the nearest space-faring culture, it is our society's duty to greet humans with an open cavity and an open mind.
