- [22:37] <@flibbyjibbits> alright so you're using charleotte tesller the librarian rogue correcT?
- [22:37] <@flibbyjibbits> just want to make sure
- [22:37] <Moonside> Yeah.
- [22:37] <@flibbyjibbits> is this a major library, like maybe the official one or part of a college, or a minor one or a bookstore?
- [22:38] <Moonside> Probably a big one, yes.
- [22:39] <@flibbyjibbits> what are you doing in there, may I ask?
- [22:40] <Moonside> Reading. In fact, I applied for the librarian position in order to be able to be there as much as possible.
- [22:40] <@flibbyjibbits> ah, ok then
- [22:41] <@flibbyjibbits> The library is sparsely populated, a few people sitting around, some just to escape the heat of the summer day, others just reading as usual, some looking to learn more about the history of the holiday
- [22:42] <@flibbyjibbits> Just about noontime, you are approahced by a Gnome, wearing a basic leather coat, boots, and worn pants; he looks like a typical hunter
- [22:42] <@flibbyjibbits> he asks you,
- [22:42] <@flibbyjibbits> "Pardon me , miss, but do you know about how long ago the battle happened? The one we're celebrating, I mean?"
- [22:43] <Moonside> I'd need a Knowledge (History) check for this, yes?
- [22:43] <Deathfish64> brb
- [22:43] <@flibbyjibbits> you can roll if you want or you can just call it common knowledge
- [22:44] <@flibbyjibbits> actually lets do a librrian professional check
- [22:44] <@flibbyjibbits> ok thats a 20
- [22:44] <Moonside> Just to remember, skill rolls are d20?
- [22:44] <@flibbyjibbits> yes
- [22:44] <@flibbyjibbits> i rolled a 20
- [22:44] <Eltrotraw> ahahaha that's right we don't have bitdroid
- [22:44] <@flibbyjibbits> just using my own dice for now since bitdroid is down
- [22:45] <Moonside> Alright.
- [22:45] <@flibbyjibbits> you are aware that it was roughly 800 years ago, but the exact year is unknown, much less the exact date, since historical records only go back about 600
- [22:46] <@flibbyjibbits> additionally much of the records of Rakor himself were destroyed in the war with the adjacent country of Farim
- [22:46] <Moonside> I straighten my glasses, close my book (after putting a bookmark in it), and look at the little man. "Some 800 years."
- [22:47] <Deathfish64> I have acquires snacks
- [22:47] <Deathfish64> carry on
- [22:48] <@flibbyjibbits> "Ah, ok, thats what I thought. Just wanted to make sure." he starts to walk away, but then turns back, "I'm part of a society of historical enthusiasts, particularly relating to the King Rakor, but in my home country we don't get too much news from here."
- [22:48] <@flibbyjibbits> [sense motive] you get a feeling like hes trying to lead you towards a different area of conversation
- [22:50] <Moonside> "Uh huh... do you need anything else?" I say this with more than a hint of annoyance in my voice, and hope that he'll say "no" and go away so that I can continue to read my book.
- [22:52] <@flibbyjibbits> "I uh," he takes a step back, probably not expecting that sort of a response, "Well, a few of my friends and I were trying to get together a team for tommorrows events, but don't know anyone in the city; I thought that maybe someone from the library might be good to have around, since you might know more about the re-enactments than any of us would."
- [22:56] <Moonside> I sigh heavily and put the book aside, my chance to read it clearly destroyed now. "Alright, I GUESS I can help you there... but you set up reenactments of the battles without actually knowing what happened?" I say this with a tone like 'wtf were you thinking?', and get up from the chair I was sitting on.
- [23:00] <@flibbyjibbits> "oh, no, I didn't set them up, I was looking to participate. I suppose maybe it isn't like this every year as I assumed it was. That illusionist that lives in the castle, the court mage, can't remember his name, he is the one handling all of that." He says, clearly quite happy that you appear to have agreed, "He is going to make illusory armies and monsters, and then teams of five...
- [23:00] <@flibbyjibbits> ...volunteers will act out what happened, and the group that the judges say was closest get prizes, even dinner with the royal family!" He laces his fingers together and stares upwards as he says the last part
- [23:03] <Moonside> "Yeah, yeah..." I'm clearly uninterested on the prospect of having dinner with any royalties, and instead start thinking about where I'd be able to find books about the events. "Now, history books are... and those about the battle would be... hm... yeah, this way." I start walking towards some aisle.
- [23:06] <@flibbyjibbits> oh sory got distracted
- [23:07] <Moonside> I quickly find one, whose name says something about the King and the Dragon. "Yes, this one is good, from what I remember..."
- [23:08] <@flibbyjibbits> "Oh, yes, thank you," he says, following you quite closely to the shelf, "I think I might have heard of that one, but literature directly referencing the dragon Ashra was all burned where I come from, so I've never actually seen a copy" [sense motive: you, oddly, get the feeling that he may actually be telling the truth with this one] [perception: he has a crossbow under his cloak]
- [23:13] <Moonside> [I have a rapier under mine at all times, actually] "Huh, really? That's... strange." I put the book in my backpack (note: how much does it weight). "Where... did you say you were from, again?"
- [23:16] <@flibbyjibbits> "Oh, its, uh, quite far away. I'm not sure what it would be called here, in this language. " He shifts about nervously, looking somewhat relieved when the belltower rings the ring, "Oh, I suppose I should be going, I have to meet someone for a business deal, uh." He looks back in the direction that you came down the aisle, scratching his head a little, "My name is Gil, by the way, uh, fi I...
- [23:16] <@flibbyjibbits> ...don't see you again today, we're supposed to meet outside this potion shop in the south part of the city tommorrow morning, let me get the name out"
- [23:16] <@flibbyjibbits> He fishes about in his pocket a bit, pulling out a small strip of paper
- [23:18] <Moonside> [speaking in Gnome] "Alright, I'll study the book and meet you there then." I take the paper from his hand.
- [23:18] <@flibbyjibbits> " Sisle and sikle's discount curse removal,' its fairly easy to spot, got those big wooden statues outside of the guy with an arrow in his eyes; its uh, about a block south of that big market next to the parade street. " He starts to run off, then stops and turns back, "Oh, uh, just to make sure you really show up, " he reaches into another pocket, "Heres 4 golds, just to help you remember"
- [23:19] <@flibbyjibbits> ok just move those quotation marks in what I said and capitalize the "its"
- [23:21] <Moonside> My eyes clearly light up at the sight of the gold, and I take it from his hands like a starving man takes a fruit from a tree. "Oh, yes! E-er, I mean... yes, of course. I'll be there."
- [23:23] <@flibbyjibbits> [know local: you have probably been to the place before, since it is the closest thing to a chain-store that can really exist in such a setting, known for its blatant stereotypes of dwarven and kobold culture that it hawks to every tourist within a hundred miles, but they do sell cheap medicinal supplies]
- [23:24] <@flibbyjibbits> id say think outback steakhouse as a potion shop but I'm not sure if that chain exists where you are
- [23:26] <Moonside> It does, but I've never been to one. Anyway, I remember the store, and mentally try imagine the route from the library to there before deciding that I should do this later.
- [23:26] <Moonside> Also, did the little man go already?
- [23:26] <@flibbyjibbits> Seeing that you've apparently accepted his invitation to the "team" or whatever, he pretty much sprints out of the library, dropping behind him a small peice of paper, completely blank except for a large, stylised L
- [23:27] <Moonside> I pick up the paper and stare at it for a few moments, before putting it inside the history book, making a mental note to give it back to him tomorrow.
- [23:28] <@flibbyjibbits> [knowledge rollss] you have a vague idea that the particular symbol is somehow connected to that neighboring country "Farim", the one that there was that huge war with and that the agents of which went out of their way to destroy as much history as possible
- [23:29] <@flibbyjibbits> you are also aware that due to the terms of the peace treaty that it is a very high crime to cross that border wall, even temporarily, for any reason
- [23:29] <@flibbyjibbits> brb bathroom
- [23:30] <Moonside> And that I'd probably be in trouble if I were to be found in the company someone who did just that. Oh, just wonderful.
- [23:32] <@flibbyjibbits> it is still somewhat confusing as to why that would be the only figure on an entire page, but you can not recall anything else specific about it
- [23:33] <@flibbyjibbits> you keep rolling so high with perception and knowlegde checks geez
- [23:33] <Eltrotraw> I sense a trend here
- [23:33] <Moonside> Well, my INT is 20, so I guess that's a give for Knowledge, but I dunno about Perception.
- [23:33] <@flibbyjibbits> [perception: before putting the paper away, you do note that the letter is burned into the paper, not written on it
- [23:34] <Moonside> Mysterious!
- [23:34] <@flibbyjibbits> your rolls have been like 20 17 17 19 20 17
- [23:34] <Moonside> Putting those thoughts aside, I return t the counter in which I was sitting before, take the book from my backpack (and also wonder why I put it away in the first place) and start reading it.
- [23:36] <Moonside> (how much would you say the book weights, flib?)
- [23:36] <@flibbyjibbits> The book is, apparently, a compilation of the reports of witnesses to the battle, about a quarter of it being the epic poem of a single bard who, reportedly, observed the entire day's fighting without blinking or looking away. Thats what it says at least.
- [23:36] <@flibbyjibbits> idunno, maybe 2 pounds
- [23:38] <Moonside> Hmmm... well, I dunno really what to do now.
- [23:38] <@flibbyjibbits> thats probably about as far as we can go for now, with the "pre game" stuff, for you at least
- [23:38] <Moonside> Alright.
- [23:39] <Moonside> Oh yeah, by the way, can I sleep in the library?
- [23:39] <@flibbyjibbits> its one of the major libraries of the city right?
- [23:39] <Moonside> Yeah.
- [23:39] <@flibbyjibbits> lets say its like the official capital library
- [23:39] <@flibbyjibbits> they would likely have rooms available for the librarians and important workers who choose to stay there
- [23:39] <Moonside> Yay!
- [23:41] <@flibbyjibbits> 1d6+2 says that you have a room on the fourth floor of it that was assigned when you got the job; however long youve stayed there or if its the primary residence or whatever is up to you idc
- [23:41] <Moonside> I only ever leave the library to get food.
- [23:41] <Moonside> So yeah, I guess I live there.
- [23:42] <@flibbyjibbits> ok so anything else hm uh
- [23:43] <Moonside> What's the name of the city, again?
- [23:43] <@flibbyjibbits> Rakor city, named after the original ruler of it
- [23:43] <Moonside> Ok.
- [23:44] <@flibbyjibbits> I can't think of anything else important that would happen yet, unless you have any more questions?
- [23:44] <Moonside> Nah, not really.
