Numerology as an occult science uses the full name and birthdate of the subject and converts them into numbers. The numbers are then combined and reduced to determine the Life Path, the Birthday, the Expression and the Soul Urge numbers.
The Life Path is “the major lesson to be learned in this life; the central focus of a person’s existence.” This is the heart of the personality reading, making up 50% of the core reading. The Life Path is derived from the birth date.
The Birthday is “a sub-lesson to be learned in this life, a sub focus of the Life Path.” It can be thought of as a number “behind” the Life Path. The Birthday is derived from the day of birth. For example, if you were born on the 3rd, your birthday number would be 3. It could also be 3 if you were born on the 12th or 21st or 30th because those numbers, when added together, all reduce to 3.
The Expression is “a person’s potential natural abilities.” These are usually apparent to other people, but they are not the essence of the person. These abilities assist us as we live out our life path. The Expression is derived from all the letters in the full birth name.
The Soul Urge is “a person’s inner motivations, what they want to be, to have and to do.” The soul urges are concerned with inner matters and longings. This will influence the person’s perspective, their values, and their general approach. The Soul Urge is derived from the vowels of the birth name.
The numbers used in Numerology are 1-9, 11 and 22. 11 and 22 are master numbers. Master numbers represent potential for greater levels of understanding and awareness. They come with the opportunity for greatly significant achievements, yet with this great potential power comes an obvious degree of nervous tension. It is difficult to operate on the high level of master number, and often, people operate on the reduced level, because it is easier. Therefore, 11 is written as 11/2 and 22 as 22/4 in numerology readings, as to represent both the reduced and combined, lower and higher levels of the number. The lower the number of the Life Path, the less complex it is, and it is easier to understand the life lesson. Life paths 1-6 deal with fundamental concepts, while 7-9 deal with more advanced understandings, and finally, 11 and 22 are concerned with the most complex manifestations. It is possible to live a full and meaningful life with any life path number.
The Life Path is of most importance in numerology, making up 50% of the core reading, including 10% from the Birthday. The Expression is of second importance, making up 30% of the reading while the Soul Urge accounts for 20%, with third importance. The Birthday is last in importance.

Some numbers are harmonious and synergetic together, like 2 (cooperation, relation) and 6 (balance, love, responsibility). Other numbers, like 6 and 7 (analysis, understanding) are more discordant, because the 7 energy is more introverted while 6 energy relates to others through responsibility.
