- How to progress in Red Any% Glitchless (how I wish I did it - now updated to how I would do it if I started in 2025!):
- 1a. Watch how to setup/practice on emu, rby manip guide, and join the discord.
- 1b. If on emu choose between GSE and Gambatte-SR if using emu (I recommend GSE)
- Alan's video was made before the release of GSE, but is still a must watch for new players
- https://github.com/CasualPokePlayer/GSE/releases/tag/v0.3
- https://github.com/pokemon-speedrunning/gambatte-speedrun/releases
- 2. Learn the simple RNG manipulations (Nido, Cans, and backup Para only - skip learning full moon manips)
- ^savestates are found here along with the RBY Savestate Patcher by Hwangbro
- ^^Patching a ROM with savestates is simple or you can practice like Alan explained in the emu setup guide
- by loading states one at a time or just making your own.
- 2a. Post Nerd Paras Backup
- https://pokemon-speedrunning.github.io/speedrun-routes/#/gen-1/red-blue/main-glitchless/resources/postnerd-backup-paras
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9PdVhItn-0
- https://imgur.com/a/AOULFxh
- 2b. Cans Manip (read description of video, the manip works with zero A presses most of the time)
- https://gunnermaniac.com/pokeworld?map=1#235/199/DALLLAU
- 2c. Learn 1A Press Nido Manip (very easy)
- 2d i. PoY's Post Hiker Backup v1.0 (no palette swap, 2A Presses, Select Yolo Ball)
- 2d ii. Or Stringflow's Post Hiker Paras Manip v2.0 (no palette swap, more A presses, normal yolo ball)
- https://i.imgur.com/e9Gpoyz.jpeg
- 2e. Grogir's Backup (Hold A through Bios, 0A Presses, Regular Yolo Ball)
- ^note this manip doesn't have a savestate on SRC since it is new.
- 2f. Learn 7A Press Nido Manip (medium difficulty, but highly recommended)
- https://gunnermaniac.com/pokeworld?map=1#47/180/LLLULLUAULALDLDLLDADDADDLALLALUUAU
- https://pokemon-speedrunning.github.io/speedrun-routes/#/gen-1/red-blue/main-glitchless/resources/nido-manip
- 2g. Palette Cans (OPTIONAL - but nice for beginners since it lets you see in rock tunnel)
- 2h. Mt. Moon Manip (OPTIONAL - do not learn right away. Links to the full moon manips will be listed later)
- 3. Follow the "Lass" Beginner Route for an easier early game.
- (This route is nearly identical to other speed run routes except that we will fight the optional
- Lass in Route 3 + one extra wild encounter on Route 3 for an easier Moon Rocket fight).
- If you are determined to do a full moon manip right away then it is recommended that you follow
- the "No-Lass" Beginner route instead.
- 4. Complete Runs for a time of 2:00-2:10 or better
- (note: first runs are typically 2:30-2:45 or longer and that's normal).
- 5. Watch Pokeguy's Red Tips and Tricks Walkthrough:
- 6a. Learn a full moon manip. Maybe re-watch the rby manip guide from (1) while you're at it.
- 6b. Learn Route 3 Moon Manip (optimal - recommended)
- https://imgur.com/a/cLFjiin
- ^this manip is optimal, but we will need to skip the route 3 Lass fight to use it.
- 6c. Entr’s Moon Manip (not recommended, but some prefer it) https://pastebin.com/jnj9j47S
- ^this manip is less optimal, but allows you to continue fighting the route 3 Lass + one encounter.
- 6d. (Alternative) Leostarr3000 found a lower success rate full moon manip that is easier to perform
- Leo's moon manip is great if you have put forth your best effort learning a full moon manip, but have not found success.
- IGT failures for Leo's moon are strategically near known backup manips.
- 7. After learning a full moon manip, switch to the route below
- Differences: you must conserve HAs on rt3, skip rt3 lass, skip KOing a rt3 encounter, and
- evolve after the moon rocket fight (instead of before it), typically must MP Zubats on Bridge
- - everything else is the same.
- 8. The above route should be used to obtain a time between 1:51 - 1:55 or better.
- 9a. Switch to intermediate route
- https://pokemon-speedrunning.github.io/speedrun-routes/#/gen-1/red-blue/main-glitchless/intermediate-route/
- ^Only changes the number of items bought and level of risk with 0 revives.
- 3 x speeds --> faster Viridian Rival and faster Lance
- An item swap is added to surf menu.
- If needed go for red bar from Misty to heal pad ("fly red bar")
- Still heal when required to do so or if it's the smart move on good pace.
- ^You may have more late game timesave than you think!
- Compare your execution heavy segments to top LB runs and practice to improve them.
- 9b. Note: that you can pickup and later sell the underground full restore for an extra 1500 to use towards extra items if desired. This can be used to guard against mistakes. Check out this Money Routing Google Sheet or invest time in learning to use the program RouteOne, which is great for finding new route ideas or routing Alt Mains/Category Extensions.

- 10a. Complete runs for 1:48-1:51 or better with the intermediate route above
- Consider learning Rt3 Moon backups for F36/F37
- https://pokemon-speedrunning.github.io/speedrun-routes/#/gen-1/red-blue/main-glitchless/resources/rt3moon-f36-f37-backups
- https://i.imgur.com/ARcgCOc.jpeg
- 10b. Consider learning IGT Tracking (i.e. how to track in game time to increase success rate of manips
- by aiming to save on a good cluster of frames)
- 11. Switch to the advanced route, learn triple extended, practice yolo scrolls, consider somewhat aggressive reset efficiency early, go for fly red bar and champ red bar almost always. This would be suitable for 1:45-1:47 attempts. For WR attempts incorporate silph red bar and higher reset threshold - consider switching to a 3 repel route that can skip mansion/agatha candy. This route is riskier, but faster on average than the advanced route with less documentation currently available since it’s only for 1:44 / low 1:45 attempts.
- **UPDATE: documentation for 3 repel flex route courtesy of Maddiict:
- 12. If you have a specific question - ask away in the Discord. For manips just include a video of your attempt with an input viewer.
- Input viewers (Gens 1 & 2):
- Keyboard:
- Controller:
- ^Newest OBS version at the time of this post causes issues with gamepadviewer
- - if you have trouble getting inputs to show up when clicked out of OBS just downgrade to v30.2.2 and it'll work fine
- https://github.com/obsproject/obs-studio/releases/tag/30.2.2
