  630. NELSON
  631. There's nothing you could've done
  632. about it, the reason you're alive
  633. is because two people happened to
  634. see what was going on and stopped
  635. it.
  636.
  637. Parks reaches for the trash can next to him and vomits into
  638. it.
  639.
  640. PARKS
  641. God damn it. I could've done more.
  642. I could've done more. I should've
  643. done more.
  644.
  645. He stops for a moment as a group of shadows form behind the
  646. covered observation room.
  647.
  648. The door opens as SERGEANT STEELE, (mid-30s) comes in. He
  649. wears an "Internal Affairs" badge.
  650.
  651. Parks spits into the trash can.
  652.
  653. STEELE
  654. Run me through it, Parks. Piece by
  655. piece.
  656.
  657. Steele throws a file folder at his feet.
  658.
  659. Parks stands up.
  660.
  661. PARKS
  662. Fu-
  663.
  664. Nelson stands up and almost blocks Steele. He looks back at
  665. Parks.
  666.
  667. NELSON
  668. Not a word. Get it together.
  669.
  670. He glares at Steele.
  671.
  672. NELSON (CONT’D)
  673. Sergeant, you make another move
  674. like that again, I will make your
  675. life hell.
  676.
  677. Parks nods.
  678.
  679. PARKS
  680. I want to go home.
  681.
  682. He reaches for the change of clothes with his badge and gun

  694. him. Can I have a reason for being
  695. kicked out?
  696.
  697. IND POLICE OFFICER 1
  698. Security reasons, never said
  699. anything about you.
  700.
  701. JAMES
  702. Look, ask him yoursel-
  703.
  704. Parks bursts out the door, a cast in his left arm.
  705.
  706. Next to him is Elena.
  707.
  708. ELENA
  709. David, you've just been shot, let's
  710. just go home first...
  711.
  712. Parks just looks at the scene in front of him.
  713.
  714. PARKS
  715. James?
  716.
  717. Both of the officers take a step back and look at James.
  718.
  719. JAMES
  720. Dave?
  721.
  722. PARKS
  723. Should've probably told them you
  724. were coming. Sorry 'bout that.
  725.
  726. Dave just looks at the officers and waves them off. They nod.
  727.
  728. JAMES
  729. Grab a drink then? Do some catching
  730. up?
  731.
  732. Dave nods.
  733.
  734. PARKS
  735. Haven't seen you since...

  737. JAMES
  738. ...Convoy.
  739.
  740. PARKS

  743. James's eyes widen as he takes a sigh.
  744.
  745. JAMES
  746. Yeah, it does. You okay man?
  747.
  748. Parks takes a sigh and looks at James. He opens his mouth to
  749. something, but nothing manages to come out.
  750.
  751. His phone vibrates.
  752.
  753. A text appears. The contact reads, "Interested Party".

  789. A round is chambered.
  790.
  791. He takes a deep breath as he looks at the floors.
  792.

  819.
  820. WHITE
  821. Come on now Officer, there were
  822. other ways we could've dealt with

  825.
  826. Those around him reach for their weapons.
  827.
  828. WHITE (CONT’D)
  829. Gentlemen, he has one arm and
  830. there's six of you. It wouldn't be
  831. a fair fight now would it?
  832.
  833. Parks lowers his weapon.
  834.
  835. PARKS
  836. What? The fuck you want? You feds?
  837.
  838. He's clearly nervous.
  839.
  840. WHITE
  841. Officer- Or do you want it to be

  849.
  850. WHITE
  851. Anthony, get my case please.
  852.
  853. ANTHONY
  854. Yes sir.
  855.
  856. Anthony walks to the back of a suburban and comes back. He
  857. carries a briefcase.
  858.
  859. WHITE
  860. Price of admission is ignorance.
  861. That man was on bath salts and some
  862. modified form of PCP.
  863.
  864. White opens the briefcase.
  865.
  866. WHITE (CONT’D)
  867. He's being healed up in a known

  870.
  871. Parks just slowly nods.
  872.
  873. He closes the briefcase and passes it to Parks.
  874.

  894.
  895. Parks shrugs.
  896.
  897. JAMES (CONT’D)
  898. The feds give you that?
  899.
  900. Parks shrugs.
  901.
  902. PARKS
  903. It's information for a case. That's
  904. all I know.
  905.
  906. JAMES
  907. If it's on me, I don't have any god
  908. damn dogs.
  909.
  910. Parks rolls his eyes.
  911.
  912. PARKS
  913. If it was on you, I'd have thrown
  914. you in cuffs.
  915.
  916. JAMES

  921. James...
  922.
  923. James smiles, though it looks nervous.

  940.
  941. Elena crouches behind a couch.
  942.
  943. ELENA
  944. Why did you want me back here
  945. again? And why didn't you call the
  946. bomb squad?
  947.
  948. PARKS
  949. So if it goes off, there's not
  950. pieces of me inside of you. Plus,
  951. they're not gonna come out here
  952. because someone gave me a
  953. briefcase.
  954.
  955. ELENA
  956. But I already get pieces of you
  957. inside me.
  958.

  964. PARKS (CONT’D)
  965. ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL US ALL?!
  966.
  967. JAMES
  968. Well we know it's not pressure

  970.
  971. PARKS
  972. YOU FUCKING IDIOT!
  973.
  974. ELENA
  975. You just gave me a fucking

  982. PARKS (CONT’D)
  983. You were EOD right?
  984.

  987. talk to us back then, yeah.
  988.
  989. Parks unlatches the case and takes out a flashlight.
  990.
  991. PARKS
  992. How'd they set these things up?
  993.
  994. JAMES
  995. Damn things were rigged for a few
  996. inches, you pulled up and boom.
  997. Just look under it for wires.
  998.
  999. Parks glances under it, opening the case just a crack. He
1000. shines the light around inside of it.
  1001.
  1002. JAMES (CONT’D)
  1003. Anything?
  1004.
  1005. PARKS
1006. Negative, any clear string would've

  1009.
1010. He opens the case all the way. The files are stacked neatly.
  1011.
1012. Elena emerges from behind Parks's couch.
  1013.
  1014. ELENA
1015. What is it? Anything solid on
  1016. Lance?
  1017.
1018. Parks takes the case, turns it upside down, and dumps its
  1019. contents on the table.
  1020.
1021. He starts to spread its contents, across the table.
  1022.
  1023. PARKS
1024. Help me out with this you two.
  1025.
1026. Elena makes her way over and the three start placing folders
  1027. right side up.
  1028.
1029. David opens a file, on its cover reads, "DEPARTMENT OF

1254. James helps him out and he manages to get them on him.
  1255.
  1256. TORRES
  1257. You...
  1258.
  1259. JAMES
  1260. WHERE ARE THEY?!
  1261.
1262. He flips Torres on his back.
  1263.
  1264. PARKS
  1265. You fucking recognize me?
  1266.
  1267. TORRES
1268. Yeah, you should be dead.
  1269.
  1270. JAMES
1271. You'll be fucking dead if you don't
1272. tell me where they keep the cat
  1273. girls!
  1274.

  1279.
  1280. Parks glares at him.
  1281.
  1282. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1283. I want answers. Where's your
  1284. partner?
  1285.
1286. He takes out his badge and keeps it in the direction of the
  1287. approaching cruiser.
  1288.
  1289. TORRES
1290. Fuck you cabron, I don't need to
1291. tell you shit. Besides, my ride's
  1292. on its way here.
  1293.
1294. A cruiser pulls up with two officers. They get out of their
1295. cruiser. One runs over to James.
  1296.
  1297. IND OFFICER 3
  1298. Sir, step back.
  1299.
1300. James goes to his car and watches this.
  1301.
  1302. JAMES
1303. He knows where the cat girls are,
1304. don't let him get away with that
  1305. knowledge!
  1306.
  1307. IND OFFICER 1
1308. We won't sir, just stand back.
  1309.
1310. A small army of cruisers shows up behind them.
  1311.
  1312. TORRES
1313. Don't leave me down here, I can
  1314. fucking stand, if I didn't have
1315. these cuffs I could probably beat
1316. the shit out of you, wey!
  1317.
  1318. Parks just watches this.
  1319.
  1320. PARKS
1321. You never answered my question.
  1322.
  1323. TORRES
1324. My answer is, "Fuck you."
  1325.
  1326. Parks rolls his eyes.
  1327.
1328. His hands shake in anger.
  1329.
1330. Another cruiser rolls up with Stanton in it.
  1331.
  1332. STANTON
  1333. You good, Parks?
  1334.
1335. He gives an "okay" hand symbol.
  1336.
  1337. STANTON (CONT’D)
  1338. The hell happened?
  1339.
  1340. Parks points at James.
  1341.
  1342. JAMES
1343. Army buddy happened to be driving
1344. through- Retard ran into traffic,
  1345. got hit.
  1346.
  1347. Stanton nods.
  1348.
  1349. STANTON
1350. Better hope he doesn't sue.
  1351.
1352. James just stands there with the officer.
  1353.
  1354. Stanton thumbs his radio.
  1355.
  1356. STANTON (CONT’D)
  1357. (into radio)
  1358. Dispatch, requesting an additional

  1360.
1361. Parks watches as three suburbans with lights and sirens start
  1362. advancing on their location.
  1363.
  1364. PARKS
1365. Who the hell are these guys?
  1366.
1367. Stanton steps in front of Parks and watches all of this.
  1368.
1369. The three suburbans stop and surround the officers.
  1370.
1371. One man in particular, SMITH, (late-30s) steps out holding
  1372. out a badge.
  1373.
1374. Their uniforms read, "DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY".
  1375.
  1376. STANTON
1377. Who might you folks be? You weren't
  1378. on our channels.
  1379.
  1380. SMITH
1381. Just call me Smith. This individual
1382. is of importance to national
  1383. security, you see.
  1384.
  1385. Stanton adjusts his glasses.
  1386.
  1387. STANTON
1388. He shot one of my men.
  1389.
  1390. SMITH
1391. I'm sorry to hear that-
  1392.
  1393. STANTON
  1394. I'm sorry ain't exactly going to
  1395. cut it.
  1396.
  1397. Smith glances at Parks.
  1398.
  1399. SMITH
1400. How's the arm doing? My associate
  1401. White was asking earlier.
  1402.
1403. Two of the agents walk over to where Torres is detained.
  1404.
1405. Stanton takes out his phone. Smith just patiently waits for

  1408. STANTON
  1409. (into phone)
1410. Colin? Yeah, waiting out here with

  1413. Stanton eyes's widen.
  1414.
1415. He motions toward the officer to move away from Torres.
  1416.
  1417. SMITH
1418. Thank you for your cooperation,
1419. Lieutenant. We'll take it from
  1420. here.
  1421.
1422. Two agents pick up Torres. He spits in the direction of Parks
  1423. and glares at Stanton.
  1424.
  1425. PARKS
  1426. I'LL FUCK YOU UP!
  1427.
  1428. Stanton grabs Parks.
  1429.
  1430. STANTON
1431. Don't do this, not here.
  1432.
1433. Smith looks back at him.
  1434.
  1435. SMITH
1436. These feelings are normal, officer.
1437. Anger is a normal emotion in the
  1438. grieving process.
  1439.
1440. Parks watches as the agents get into their vehicles and drive
  1441. off.
  1442.
1443. A few tears roll down his eyes.
  1444.
  1445. PARKS
1446. I was so close, I was this close
1447. and the feds fucked it up, like
1448. they do everything fucking else!
  1449. Fuck!
  1450.
1451. Parks kicks a can next to him in anger.
  1452.
  1453. STANTON
  1454. PARKS!
  1455.
  1456. He pulls Parks aside.
  1457.
  1458. STANTON (CONT’D)
1459. Look, I get it. This ain't easy by
1460. any stretch, but you gotta keep
1461. your shit together. At least until
1462. that arm of yours heals. I'm
  1463. recommending for a promotion.
  1464.
1465. Parks puts his head down.
  1466.
  1467. STANTON (CONT’D)
1468. Just keep it together until you get

  1470.
1471. A tear rolls down his eye.
  1472.
1473. James sees this and looks down.
  1474.
  1475. Another car pulls up.
  1476.
1477. Someone jumps out of the driver's seat.
  1478.
  1479. NELSON
  1480. WHAT THE FUCK, PARKS?!
  1481.
  1482. PARKS
  1483. My arm's feeling better!
  1484.
  1485. His eyes widened.
  1486.
  1487. NELSON
1488. Are you looking for IA to fire you?
1489. Hell, worse they get you for faking
  1490. your injuries.
  1491.
  1492. PARKS
  1493. But-
  1494.
  1495. Nelson massages his eyes.
  1496.
  1497. NELSON
1498. Please get better Parks. Go home.

  1510.
  1511. PARKS (CONT’D)
1512. What the fuck is wrong with you?
  1513.
1514. Parks looks at the police scanner in the backseat of his car.
  1515.
  1516. JAMES
1517. I need to know, Dave.
  1518.
  1519. PARKS
1520. About shit that exists in Japanese
1521. cartoons? If it's fucking real?
  1522.
  1523. JAMES
1524. You don't get it, but these guys,
  1525. they're fucking connected!
  1526.
  1527. Parks glares at James.
  1528.
  1529. PARKS
1530. You stupid fuck! My partner's dead
1531. and you're looking for fantasy
1532. characters?! Tell me when you find
1533. elves with thick fookin' oirish
  1534. accents, boyo.
  1535.
  1536. JAMES
  1537. I have some proof that they're
1538. real, Dave! You just have to
  1539. believe-
  1540.
  1541. PARKS
  1542. (mockingly)
1543. Believe me Dave, they're real!
  1544.
  1545. Parks rolls his eyes.
  1546.
1547. James slicks his hair back.
  1548.
  1549. JAMES
1550. It sounds fucking nuts, okay? Just
1551. stick with it. I'll tell you if I'm
  1552. wrong.
  1553.
  1554. PARKS
  1555. IT DOES.
  1556.
1557. Parks pats his shoulder and his face grows to that of
  1558. discomfort.
  1559.
  1560. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1561. Shit. Hey James...
  1562.
1563. He starts to feel light headed.
  1564.
1565. His vision goes in and out.
  1566.
  1567. JAMES
  1568. Dave?!
  1569.
1570. Parks's eyes widen as a massive pain enters his shoulder.
  1571.
  1572. PARKS
1573. TAKE THE FUCKING CAST OFF ME!
  1574.
  1575. JAMES
  1576. Oh shit.
  1577.
1578. James pulls over and turns on his hazard lights. He takes off
1579. his seatbelt and takes out his knife.
  1580.
1581. Parks begins to scream in agony as he tries to take his cast
  1582. off with one hand.
  1583.
1584. James is hesitant as he stares at Parks, completely unsure of
  1585. what to do.
  1586.
  1587. JAMES (CONT’D)
1588. I don't need you bleeding to death
  1589. in my-
  1590.
  1591. PARKS
  1592. GET IT OFF!
  1593.
  1594. JAMES
  1595. Shit! You coked up-
  1596.
  1597. He cuts Parks's cast.
  1598.
  1599. PARKS
  1600. DAMN IT!
  1601.
1602. James freezes up out of sheer confusion.
  1603.
  1604. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1605. KEEP GOING!
  1606.
1607. Parks starts to try and get the cast off of himself by prying
1608. at it with his hand.
  1609.
1610. James takes his knife and starts to cut his cast out.
  1611.
1612. Parks takes his jacket off. The cast comes free. Parks's
  1613. takes off his shirt.
  1614.
  1615. PARKS (CONT’D)
1616. So fucking hot in here, jesus
  1617. christ.
  1618.
1619. Bandages are wrapped around where he was shot.
  1620.
  1621. JAMES
1622. You think I should call Doc?
  1623.
1624. Parks shakes his head and starts to take the bandages off of
  1625. his shoulder, finding it...
  1626.
1627. ...As if it were unscathed by the round that had struck him.
  1628. All that's left is a scar.
  1629.
1630. Parks takes a deep breath.
  1631.
  1632. PARKS
1633. What the fuck was that man?
  1634.
1635. James just shrugs, his eyes widened.
  1636.
1637. Parks puts his shirt back on.
  1638.
  1639. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1640. Get me home.
  1641.
  1642.

1646. steps out of James's car.
  1647.
  1648. JAMES
1649. You gonna be good man?
  1650.
1651. Parks stretches out his left arm. A loud "pop" comes out of
1652. it as he straightens it out.
  1653.
  1654. PARKS
1655. Your guess is as good as mine.
  1656.
1657. James just looks at this, completely astounded.
  1658.
  1659. JAMES
1660. You are one lucky son of a bitch,
1661. Davey. If only the guys back then
1662. had the luck you do.
  1663.
  1664. PARKS
  1665. It doesn't change anything.
  1666.
  1667.
  1668. INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - NIGHT

  1674.
  1675. ELENA
  1676. I'm in the kitchen!
  1677.
  1678. PARKS
1679. ...I need to show you something.
  1680.
1681. Elena walks through the kitchen.
  1682.
1683. Parks turns on the light.
  1684.
1685. Elena's jaw drops as she looks at his arm.
  1686.
  1687. ELENA
  1688. Your arm...
  1689.
1690. Parks stretches out his formerly damaged left arm.
  1691.
  1692. PARKS
  1693. I don't know.
  1694.
1695. She walks over to Parks and holds him.
  1696.
  1697. ELENA
1698. They said you weren't going to make
  1699. it, Dave.
  1700.
1701. Parks closes his eyes and holds her.
  1702.
1703. He kisses her on the forehead and holds her tight.
  1704.
  1705. ELENA (CONT’D)
  1706. Lance's funeral's tomorrow. I got
1707. your dress uniform dry cleaned.
  1708.
1709. With a sigh, Parks's hands hold her tighter as he leans into
  1710. her neck.
  1711.
1712. He sits there in silence as he holds her.
  1713.
  1714. PARKS
1715. You know I gotta talk to his
1716. wife... It should have been me,
  1717. Elena.
  1718.
  1719. ELENA
  1720. Dave. You made it.
  1721.
1722. Parks sobs as he holds her.
  1723.
  1724. FADE TO BLACK.
  1725.
  1726.
  1727. INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - DAY
  1728.
1729. Parks puts on his dress uniform.
  1730.
1731. His face looks weary as the world around him seems to move at
1732. a different pace than he is.
  1733.
1734. He sits and eats his breakfast. His eyes look haggard.
  1735.
1736. Elena appears behind him and kisses him on the cheek.
  1737.
  1738. ELENA
  1739. I'll drive.
  1740.
  1741. Parks swallows his food.
  1742.
  1743. PARKS
  1744. Sure, I guess.
  1745.
  1746.
  1747. INT. CHURCH - DAY
  1748.
1749. PASTOR HILL, (mid-50s) stands behind a podium.
  1750.
  1751. HILL
1752. On behalf of the family, I would
  1753. like to thank you...
  1754.
1755. Parks sits there in his dress uniform.
  1756.
1757. He's spaced out. The words from the pastor drift away.
  1758.
1759. The world seems to go away as he looks out a window next to
  1760. him.
  1761.
  1762. ELENA
  1763. Dave?
  1764.
1765. Parks takes a deep breath and snaps out of his trance.
  1766.
  1767. ELENA (CONT’D)
1768. They want you to say a few words.
  1769.
  1770. Parks nods.
  1771.
  1772. PARKS
1773. Yeah, uh... Yeah, I'll do that.
  1774. Sorry.
  1775.
1776. The eyes of the congregation fix themselves onto Parks.
  1777.
1778. Parks makes his way up to the podium. He takes out a set of
1779. notecards. His hands shake as he looks up at the crowd.
  1780.
  1781. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1782. (into mic)
1783. You guys can hear me alright?
  1784.
1785. He looks at the front row of pews which give him a thumbs up
  1786. and a smile.
  1787.
  1788. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1789. Roger that...
  1790.
1791. He starts to rearrange his notecards.
  1792.
  1793. PARKS (CONT’D)
1794. Lance Hawkins was 21 when he taken
1795. away from us. To me, he seemed a
  1796. lot older than that.
  1797.
1798. He tries to force a smile as he looks back down at his cards,
1799. then back at the audience.
  1800.
  1801. Parks sighs.
  1802.
  1803. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1804. He was however, young,
  1805. inexperienced, and struggled. He
  1806. was stupid.
  1807.
1808. A gasp from the audience as they begin to murmur amongst
  1809. themselves.
  1810.
1811. Sergeant Steele and Nelson are in the audience. Nelson's eyes
1812. widen and he massages his eyes. Steele jots down some more
  1813. notes.
  1814.
  1815. PARKS (CONT’D)
1816. He'd made mistakes. I was hard on
1817. him and so were all the others who
1818. worked with him during his field
  1819. training period.
  1820.
1821. Parks takes another breath. His hands almost freeze up and he
1822. has to move the cards that he just spoke aside.
  1823.
  1824. PARKS (CONT’D)
1825. However, and Mrs. Hawkins please
1826. correct me if I'm wrong- He was
1827. often times trying to correct
1828. himself in his mistakes. He'd go
1829. through notepads, and I noticed
1830. that at the end of them he'd have a
  1831. set of goals.
  1832.
  1833. The audience goes silent.
  1834.
  1835. PARKS (CONT’D)
1836. He'd ask me what he missed out on.
1837. How he could do his job better, how
1838. he could keep both of us safe.
  1839.
  1840. Parks chuckles.
  1841.
  1842. PARKS (CONT’D)
1843. He was obsessive with his notes and
1844. trying to better himself as an
1845. officer. Even in his final moments,
1846. he was listening to me, using
  1847. everything he learned...
  1848.
1849. Parks looks down and sets his notecards aside.
  1850.
  1851. PARKS (CONT’D)
1852. In all, we lost him. He was good.
  1853.
1854. He steps off the podium and walks back to his seat. He spots
1855. MARK DIAZ, (late-20s) sitting in the back of the room.
  1856.
  1857. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1858. Reporter?
  1859.
  1860. Parks sits back down.
  1861.
  1862. HILL
1863. At this time, I will be speaking
  1864. with Mrs. Hawkins. Refreshments
1865. will be served in the room to my
  1866. right.
  1867.
1868. People around Parks begin to stand up and converse amongst
1869. themselves. Parks makes his way over to Mark.
  1870.
1871. He continues to move over to where Mark is. Mark jots
1872. something down "unaware" in his phone next to Parks's name.
  1873.
  1874. PARKS
1875. You better have a good reason to be
  1876. here.
  1877.
1878. Mark stands up and smiles at Parks.
  1879.
  1880. MARK
1881. Step outside with me, I need a few
  1882. words with you.
  1883.
  1884. PARKS
  1885. Like hell you do!
  1886.
1887. People glance over at him.
  1888.
  1889. PARKS (CONT’D)
  1890. (hushed)
  1891. Like hell you do.
  1892.
  1893. MARK
  1894. See what I mean?
  1895.
1896. Mark puts his phone in his pocket. He stands up and walks
  1897. with Parks.
  1898.
  1899. Mark looks forward.
  1900.
  1901. MARK (CONT’D)
  1902. (whispering)
1903. Look, more people who have no idea
  1904. what you've actually just
  1905. uncovered.
  1906.
1907. LAYLA HAWKINS, (22) suddenly holds Parks, sobbing.
  1908.
  1909. LAYLA
  1910. He's never coming back! He's never
  1911. coming back.
  1912.
1913. Parks's eyes widen as he holds her.
  1914.
1915. A look of shock in Parks's eyes. Mark walks up behind her and
1916. taps her on the shoulder.
  1917.
  1918. She turns around.
  1919.
1920. He pulls out a handkerchief and passes it to her.
  1921.
  1922. MARK
1923. Mrs. Hawkins, your husband was a
1924. hero who handled the situation as
  1925. best he could.
  1926.
1927. Layla takes the handkerchief and sobs into it.
  1928.
  1929. LAYLA
1930. He was going to be a dad, Officer
  1931. Parks.
  1932.
  1933. PARKS
  1934. Dave. Just, Dave.
  1935.
1936. She sits in the pews and struggles to regain her composure.
  1937.
1938. Layla struggles to say anything.
  1939.
  1940. Her phone rings.
  1941.
  1942. LAYLA
1943. Hold on, I have to take this.
  1944.
  1945. She sniffles.
  1946.
  1947. PARKS
1948. If you need anything, just ask.
  1949.
  1950. LAYLA
  1951. Thank you, Dave.
  1952.
  1953.
  1954. EXT. CHURCH - DAY
  1955.
1956. The rain comes down. Mark leans against the wall with a
  1957. cigarette in his mouth.
  1958.
  1959. MARK
  1960. I'm surprised, newly promoted
1961. detective. You don't realize the
1962. shit you've just stepped in, do
  1963. you?
  1964.
  1965. PARKS
1966. Cut the shit, what do you know?
  1967.
  1968. MARK
1969. Well Torres is dead. Someone did
1970. you a favor, my man. Seems like the
1971. responding officers can't seem to
1972. get their radios working, so they
1973. had to use their personal phones to
1974. call up the coroner. Better meet
  1975. 'em there.
  1976.
  1977. Parks's eyes widen.
  1978.
  1979. PARKS
1980. The feds got him last night.
  1981.
  1982. MARK
  1983. (mocking)
  1984. But the feds!
  1985.
  1986. He laughs at this.
  1987.
  1988. MARK (CONT’D)
1989. Oh, the guys in suits! Right!
  1990.
1991. Parks's eyes widen in anger as he walks over to Mark.
  1992.
  1993. PARKS
1994. What the fuck are you not telling
1995. me or anyone on this investigation?
1996. There's a dead cop and you want to
  1997. play Frank fucking West?
  1998.
  1999. MARK
2000. I actually look up to the guy
  2001. myself, but-
  2002.
2003. Parks gives him a death glare and gets ready to raise his arm
2004. as if to strangle him.
  2005.
  2006. MARK (CONT’D)
2007. Okay, okay, look. I'm just on the
2008. side looking to tell the truth, the
2009. facts of the matter, you don't see
  2010. that shit anymore.
  2011.
2012. Parks motions for him to go on.
  2013.
  2014. MARK (CONT’D)
2015. The truth is, there's some kind of
2016. war breaking out. You happened to
2017. be a roadblock in the middle of it.
2018. The dead guy? Guy who got his
2019. brains blown out and caused you
2020. guys to go light up that car? Step
2021. away while you can, Dave.
  2022.
2023. He shows a scar on his neck.
  2024.
  2025. MARK (CONT’D)
2026. Because I ain't built for the world
  2027. you are.
  2028.
  2029. Parks nods.
  2030.
  2031. PARKS
  2032. That's all I need.
  2033.
  2034.
  2035. INT. CHURCH - DAY
  2036.
2037. Parks walks over to Elena.
  2038.
  2039. PARKS
  2040. I need to go.
  2041.
  2042. ELENA
  2043. Dave, his wife...
  2044.
2045. Layla is in line to look into Lance's grave.
  2046.
2047. Parks takes a moment to glance at her, then glances at his
  2048. phone.
  2049.
2050. He turns away and walks out of the church.
  2051.
  2052.
  2053. EXT. CHURCH - DAY
  2054.
2055. Nelson walks up next to Parks as he steps out.
  2056.
  2057. NELSON
2058. Parks, I advise you be careful when
2059. you do things like that. IA's been
2060. up and down your case all day,
  2061. there's a chance they found
  2062. something.
  2063.
  2064. PARKS
  2065. There's always a chance.
  2066.
2067. Parks stretches out his arm and walks over to his car.
  2068.
  2069. NELSON
2070. What happened to your cast?
  2071.
  2072. PARKS
  2073. I was just lucky, I guess.
  2074.
  2075. Nelson just shrugs.
  2076.
  2077. NELSON
  2078. Alright then.
  2079.
2080. He walks out and gets into his car.
  2081.
  2082.
  2083. INT. MORGUE - DAY
  2084.
2085. Stanton waits for him in there.
  2086.
2087. Parks reads off the case file then looks down at the body.
  2088.
2089. Two gunshots to the chest and one to the head.
  2090.
  2091. STANTON
  2092. You weren't wrong.
  2093.
  2094. PARKS
  2095. About what?
  2096.
  2097. STANTON
2098. Whatever these guys are, they got
  2099. something going with 'em.
  2100.
2101. Parks looks down at the body.
  2102.
  2103. PARKS
2104. What do we got here, Vincent from
2105. Collateral coming to take what's
  2106. his?
  2107.
  2108. STANTON
  2109. Something like that.
  2110.
2111. He points to the glass.
  2112.
2113. Three rounds sit in the clear sample glass.
  2114.
2115. Parks takes a pair of forceps and looks at them.
  2116.
  2117. PARKS
  2118. That's not a handgun round.
  2119.
  2120. STANTON
2121. Not at all, we're gonna send it up
2122. to the ME, but from the looks of
  2123. it, it's probably .308.
  2124.
2125. THOMAS SCOTT, (mid-50s) runs his scalpel down the man's
2126. chest. The three watch as the incision sows itself back up
  2127. slowly.
  2128.
  2129. SCOTT
2130. As you can see here, Mr. Torres has
2131. some kind of regenerative healing
  2132. ability.
  2133.
  2134. STANTON
2135. The hell kind of freaks are we
  2136. dealing with?
  2137.
2138. Parks watches as the incision closes itself.
  2139.
  2140. SCOTT
  2141. It's nothing I've ever seen
  2142. before.
  2143.
  2144. PARKS
  2145. Christ.
  2146.
  2147. SCOTT (CONT’D)
2148. The skull is interesting however.
  2149.
2150. He takes out an autopsy saw.
  2151.
2152. Stanton taps him on the shoulder and makes a motion for him
2153. to put on his glasses.
  2154.
2155. He turns on his saw and sparks begin to fly out.
  2156.
  2157. PARKS
  2158. (over saw)
  2159. IS THAT NORMAL?!
  2160.
2161. Scott turns off the saw and sets it down next to his other
  2162. tools.
  2163.
  2164. SCOTT
  2165. That's some kind of metal. I sent a
2166. sample up to forensics for
2167. examination, but other than tha-
  2168.
2169. The door opens and slams shut behind them.
  2170.
2171. A man MARCUS, (late-20s) and a woman, DAWN PAULSEN (early-
2172. 30s) walk into the room.
  2173.
  2174. PARKS
2175. Who the hell are you?
  2176.
2177. Marcus has an obvious grin on his face.
  2178.
  2179. MARCUS
2180. Agents Marcus Matthews and Dawn
  2181. Paulsen, Department of Homeland
2182. Security, about to secure this
  2183. body.
  2184.
  2185. PARKS
2186. This body's in our custody
  2187. actually.
  2188.
2189. He bites his lip and looks over at Dawn.
  2190.
  2191. MARCUS
  2192. Oooohhh, well-
  2193.
2194. Stanton watches this in confusion.
  2195.
2196. Dawn passes a paper to Stanton.
  2197.
  2198. Stanton watches this puzzled.
  2199.
2200. He takes a look at her for a moment and just continues to
2201. watch her as he takes the paper.
  2202.
  2203. STANTON
  2204. (reading)
2205. By order of the Department of
2206. Homeland security, you are to give
2207. any details of the murder of
  2208. Officer Lance Hawkins...
  2209.
2210. His expression changes to that of anger. Stanton looks up and
2211. passes the paper back to Dawn.
  2212.
  2213. Parks's eyes widen.
  2214.
  2215. STANTON (CONT’D)
  2216. All yours then.
  2217.
  2218. PARKS
  2219. Wait, what?
  2220.
2221. Parks stands in front of the body.
  2222.
  2223. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2224. Abso fucking lutely not.
  2225.
  2226. MARCUS
  2227. You're really going to impede a
  2228. federal investigation, Officer?
  2229.
  2230. STANTON
  2231. It's detective now, actually.
  2232.
  2233. MARCUS
  2234. Well, detective!
  2235.
  2236. Marcus glances at Parks.
  2237.
  2238. MARCUS (CONT’D)
2239. I'm ordered to secure any and all
2240. evidence by any means necessary.
2241. Even if it means Miss Dawn here
2242. knocking you out and dumping you in
  2243. the desert.
  2244.
  2245. PARKS
  2246. Fuck you.
  2247.
  2248. MARCUS
2249. That's no way to speak to a federal
  2250. officer, detective.
  2251.
2252. Parks glares at Marcus, then walks out of the door in anger.
  2253.
  2254.
  2255. EXT. MORGUE - DAY
  2256.
2257. Parks bursts out of the morgue with a pack of cigarettes.
  2258.
  2259. PARKS
  2260. FUCK!
  2261.
2262. He lights one and puffs on it in anger.
  2263.
  2264. Diaz appears behind him.
  2265.
2266. He steps on a leaf. The sound causes Parks to reach for his
  2267. weapon.
  2268.
2269. With a glare, he looks at Diaz.
  2270.
  2271. PARKS (CONT’D)
2272. I take you had something to do with
2273. evidence being removed from our
  2274. jurisdiction?
  2275.
  2276. Diaz goes wide eyed.
  2277.
  2278. DIAZ
  2279. Wait. Who?
  2280.
  2281. PARKS
2282. Homeland came in with some familiar
  2283. name...
  2284.
  2285. He drops his cigarette.
  2286.
  2287. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2288. Dawn... Don... Paulsen.
  2289.
  2290. DIAZ
2291. Doc had something to do with this?
  2292.
  2293. PARKS
  2294. That's where I've heard that
  2295. fucking name.
  2296.
2297. Parks takes out his phone and thumbs through the contacts.
  2298.
  2299. DIAZ
  2300. Hey, whatever you're doing, I want
  2301. in on too.
  2302.
  2303. PARKS
  2304. No, you don't.
  2305.
  2306. DIAZ
2307. Even if I have information relating
2308. to his death that you may very well
  2309. need?
  2310.
2311. Parks stops his thumb on James's contact.
  2312.
  2313. DIAZ (CONT’D)
2314. This goes both ways you know.
  2315.
2316. Parks just looks at Diaz dead in the eyes.
  2317.
  2318. DIAZ (CONT’D)
2319. Give me your contact card.
  2320.
2321. Parks puts his phone in his pocket. He takes out his wallet
2322. and passes him his contact card.
  2323.
  2324. PARKS
2325. Email me everything you have. Until
2326. then, I have to make a phone call
  2327. to a friend.
  2328.
  2329. Diaz nods.
  2330.
2331. A van pulls out of a gate at the morgue.
  2332.
2333. Marcus sits in the driver's seat, Dawn right next to him.
  2334.
  2335. Parks goes back inside
  2336.
  2337.
  2338. INT. MORGUE - DAY
  2339.
2340. Stanton stands there and massages his eyes.
  2341.
  2342. STANTON
2343. Go home Parks, we'll figure this
2344. out next week. Rest up, get someone
2345. to take a look at you, because
2346. you're not looking too good.
  2347.
  2348. Parks just nods.
  2349.
  2350. PARKS
  2351. Yes, sir.
  2352.
2353. Parks takes another sigh as he takes out his phone. He thumbs
2354. James's contact and calls him.
  2355.
  2356. PARKS (CONT’D)
  2357. (into phone)
  2358. Yo James.
  2359.

  2372.
  2373. He unlocks his car.
  2374.
  2375. JAMES (O.S.)
2376. Yeah, kind of broke contact after
2377. the whole convoy incident though.
2378. We talk here and there.
  2379.
  2380. PARKS
  2381. (into phone)
2382. Did he ever talk about having a
  2383. sister?
  2384.
  2385. JAMES (O.S.)
2386. Nah, he was a closed box when it
2387. came to family shit. Never even
  2388. talked about LA.

2400. really need this info in
  2401. particular.
  2402.
  2403. JAMES (O.S.)
2404. Look, I know I barely stand you
2405. when it comes to cops, but doc is a
  2406. different animal entirely. Worked
2407. with him or not, he's not going to
2408. be thrilled you're calling him in
  2409. that capacity.
  2410.
  2411. PARKS
  2412. (into phone)
  2413. Are you okay?
  2414.
  2415. JAMES (O.S.)
  2416. What?
  2417.
  2418. PARKS
  2419. (into phone)
2420. You actually said something sane,
  2421. you're right. Fuck.
  2422.
  2423. JAMES (O.S.)
2424. I'm still looking for cat girls.
  2425.
  2426. PARKS
  2427. (into phone)

  2445. Hey, Dave- What happened?
  2446.
  2447. PARKS
  2448. I'm gonna rest.
  2449.
2450. Parks walks to the couch and sits down. His eyes are ragged
2451. as he takes a throw pillow next to him and holds it tight.
  2452.
2453. Elena scoots over and watches Parks.
  2454.
  2455. LAYLA
  2456. It wasn't your fault, Dave. You're
2457. still looking for who got Lance,

  3033.
  3034. INT. PARKS'S CAR - NIGHT
  3035.
  3036. PARKS
3037. Can you not fucking smoke in my
3038. car? Jesus, you haven't changed.
  3039.
3040. He looks at the box of Lucky Strikes in the cupholder.
  3041.
  3042. JAMES
  3043. You have.
  3044.
  3045. Parks shakes his head.
  3046.
  3047. PARKS
  3048. Whatever, that doesn't fucking
3049. matter dude. What deal? What did
  3050. they pay you for?
  3051.
  3052. JAMES
3053. I'm just supposed to drive you
  3054. home.
  3055.
  3056. Parks cocks an eyebrow.
  3057.
  3058. PARKS
3059. What? That's it? Nelson pai-
  3060.
  3061. JAMES
3062. Money got wired into my account.
3063. They said they'd pay for an Uber
3064. once I got you to your place.
  3065.
3066. James merges onto a highway that reads "I-17 North, Black
  3067. Canyon/Flagstaff".
  3068.
3069. His eyes constantly scan the road in front and around him.
  3070.
  3071. JAMES (CONT’D)
3072. What I don't know is why this group
3073. has a vested interest in you, a
  3074. cop.
  3075.
  3076. PARKS
  3077. Mind if I take a look?
  3078.
3079. James takes his phone out of his pocket and holds his free
  3080. hand out for Parks.
  3081.
  3082. JAMES
  3083. Knock yourself out.
  3084.
3085. Parks takes his phone. The glow illuminates James's face as
3086. Parks looks at the text.
  3087.
  3088. TEXT
3089. 5,000 dollars to get your friend
  3090. home. Sincerely, an interested
  3091. party.
  3092.
3093. Parks screenshots the text and tabs out to James's home
3094. screen that shows a harem of cat girls.
  3095.
3096. His phone vibrates as he sends the screenshot to himself.
  3097.
  3098. PARKS
3099. What made you want to help me?
  3100.
  3101. JAMES
  3102. Well, disregarding the 5k
  3103. supposedly being transferred into
3104. my account, and disregarding the
3105. fact that your position as a cop
  3106. violates the non aggression
3107. principle- I really want to find
3108. out whether cat girls are rea-
  3109.
  3110. PARKS
  3111. Oh my fucking god.
  3112.
  3113. JAMES
  3114. You'll know. One day, you'll see
3115. them and question everything you
  3116. know. I would know, I did.
  3117.
  3118. PARKS
3119. Look, the day cat girls are real is
  3120. the day I eat my 9mm.
  3121.
3122. Police lights flash behind them.
  3123.
  3124. JAMES
  3125. God fucking damn it.
  3126.
  3127. PARKS (CONT’D)
3128. ...Eat my gun... Damn it.
  3129.
3130. James pulls the car onto the right shoulder of the freeway.
  3131.
3132. Parks looks at the mirror.
  3133.
3134. The cars are unmarked Crown Vics.
  3135.
  3136. PARKS (CONT’D)
  3137. Wait a fucking second...
  3138.
  3139. JAMES
  3140. Problem?
  3141.
3142. Parks reaches for his Glock.
  3143.
3144. The officer on Parks's side steps closer and reveals himself
  3145. full of face tattoos.
  3146.
3147. James looks at Parks with wide eyes as he looks to his side.
3148. The officer's arm is covered with tats.
  3149.
  3150. PARKS
  3151. DRIVE!
  3152.
3153. James puts the car in gear and slams his foot on the gas.
  3154.
  3155. PARKS (CONT’D)
  3156. GO GO GO!
  3157.
3158. The one approaching runs back to his car as the other two
  3159. cars pursue.
  3160.
3161. James watches the rear view mirror and pulls out his phone,
3162. then turns the volume knob all the way up.
  3163.
  3164. A grin materializes on James's face.
  3165.
3166. Running in the 90s by Dave Rodgers plays on the radio.
  3167.
  3168. JAMES
  3169. Let's do this...
  3170.
3171. The highway in front of them stands empty as two of the
3172. cruisers try to catch up.
  3173.
3174. James turns the car to the right and takes an exit.
  3175.
3176. Parks watches behind him as the cruisers follow the two.
  3177.
3178. James looks down at the transmission.
  3179.
  3180. JAMES (CONT’D)
3181. Fuckin' automatic... PIECE OF SHIT!
  3182.
3183. The cruisers behind follow even closer.
  3184.
3185. James slows the car down and hangs a right turn right before
  3186. traffic starts.
  3187.
3188. The cruisers behind the two screech to halt.
  3189.
3190. One makes it through and continues to tail the two.
  3191.
3192. Parks gets his phone out and dials 911.
  3193.
3194. He puts the phone to his ear. He looks at his phone.
  3195.
  3196. PARKS
  3197. I got no reception!
  3198.
  3199. JAMES
  3200. Got it!
  3201.
3202. The cruiser continues to follow.
  3203.
3204. James looks at the road around him as it tails them.
  3205.
3206. Parks raises his handgun and raises it toward the cruiser.
  3207.
  3208. PARKS
  3209. I don't think I can do this James!
  3210.
  3211. JAMES
  3212. I DON'T THINK THEY AGREE, DAVE!
  3213.
3214. The cruiser pulls further away from the two and then comes
  3215. back to ram them.
  3216.
3217. Parks takes a breath as he watches the other guy pull out his
  3218. gun.
  3219.
  3220. Parks's eyes widen.
  3221.
3222. James slams the brakes and watches the other car crash into a
  3223. wall.
  3224.
3225. The two watch as both of them get out of the car dressed in
  3226. Phoenix Police uniforms.
  3227.
  3228. PARKS
  3229. Christ...
  3230.
3231. James guns the engine and continues to drive forward.
  3232.
  3233. JAMES
3234. Who did you piss off Dave?
  3235.
3236. Parks looks behind him and holsters his handgun.
  3237.
  3238. PARKS
  3239. I don't know. I don't.
  3240.
  3241. JAMES
3242. Christ. I might be fucking nuts for
3243. chasing cat girls, but at least
3244. people have the common decency not
3245. to shoot me over them! Then again,
3246. if they do, they probably are real
3247. and someone's covering it up.
  3248.
3249. Parks sits back in his seat and takes a deep breath. James
  3250. turns off the music.
  3251.
  3252. PARKS
3253. Do you hear yourself right now? Are
  3254. you this self-aware?
  3255.
3256. James just shrugs and makes a right turn into Parks's
  3257. neighborhood.
  3258.
  3259. JAMES
3260. Whoever is chasing you, you and I
  3261. both need them dead.
  3262.
  3263. PARKS
3264. Wait, wait, wait. You're gonna
  3265. fucking kill them?
  3266.
  3267. JAMES
3268. I mean, yeah, why not?
  3269.
  3270. PARKS
  3271. We need them alive-
  3272.
  3273. JAMES
3274. You saw what happens when you
3275. spring them in jail, some fucking
3276. fed bails them out. This is how I'm
3277. doing this. If it weren't for me,
3278. those guys would've blown your
  3279. fuckin' brains out!
  3280.
3281. Parks sits there and sighs.
  3282.
  3283. PARKS
3284. If those were real cops...
  3285.
  3286. JAMES
3287. They weren't. You made the right
  3288. call Dave.
  3289.
  3290. James makes another turn.
  3291.
  3292. PARKS
  3293. I don't think I'm very good at
  3294. that.
  3295.
  3296. JAMES
3297. You were better than any MP
3298. stateside or in country. I mean,
3299. choice wise. You were shit at your
  3300. job.
  3301.
  3302. PARKS
  3303. I didn't care. Those guys were
  3304. fucking retards.
  3305.
  3306. JAMES
3307. Thanks for giving me my pressure
3308. cooker back. We're even now and I
  3309. get five grand.
  3310.
  3311. PARKS
3312. Whatever works for you dude.
  3313.
3314. The car makes another turn into
  3315.
  3316.

  3329. JAMES
3330. Dave. Rest. Just do that. I get
3331. paid, you solve your case. I go
  3332. find my cat girls.
  3333.
  3334. Parks just chuckles.
  3335.
  3336. PARKS
  3337. Fuck, dude.
  3338.
  3339. The two get out.
  3340.
3341. James tosses Parks his keys.
  3342.
  3343. JAMES
3344. Fucking rest dude. They'll still be
3345. out there trust me. The bad guys
  3346. always are.
  3347.
  3348. PARKS
3349. You are something else, you know
  3350. that?
  3351.
  3352. James shrugs.
  3353.
  3354. JAMES
3355. We're all the main characters in
  3356. our own stories, Dave.
  3357.
3358. Parks just shoots a confused look.
  3359.
  3360. PARKS
  3361. What?!
  3362.
3363. James lights up a cigarette and gets into his car.

  3372.
3373. He passes out on the couch.
  3374.
3375. Elena walks over with a blanket. She holds Parks and pulls
  3376. the blanket up.
  3377.
  3378. PARKS (CONT’D)

  3390.
3391. Parks has a lollipop in his mouth.
  3392.
3393. Nelson walks over to Parks's desk and watches him.
  3394.
  3395. NELSON
3396. How was your break Parks?
  3397.
  3398. PARKS

  3408.
  3409. NELSON
  3410. Any leads?
  3411.
  3412. PARKS
3413. I got one. Looks like someone I

  3415. sure though.
  3416.
3417. Nelson gives him a nod.
  3418.
  3419. NELSON

  3451.
3452. "Doc, contact in case of emergency" sits as one of the

  3454.
  3455. PARKS (CONT’D)
3456. Fuck, man... Worst I can be is

  3458.
3459. He looks at the contact for a moment.
  3460.

3570. Look, I had no other choice, I was

  3572.

  3593.
3594. He places the cuffs on her.
  3595.

  3599.
3600. The two move towards the exit.
  3601.
  3602. PARKS

  3606. know what's going on.
  3607.
  3608. DAWN
