- Hints: The Father is running Research Group Miskatonic.
- In Chapter 22, _Data Dive_ we see this major clue:
- “**Down to the Northernmost area**, we have surprisingly eliminated a majority of those who meet all criteria. **The only ones who remain** are- a **biologist who has state funding and might feel threatened by our work in advancing medical technology- so there is a possible motive. They were written up with a warning for holding possible anti-shil’vati feelings by their HR department, which reinforces that they are not the most welcoming. They also worked for the intelligence department,** but I think it has that flag only on a technicality. He quit that oh, a good forty years ago? It’s amazing he’s still working at all- **I see here he manages a science lab, but while he has access to chemicals, we see nothing of any quantity acquired or missing from those labs which would suffice to build a single bomb of the type that has detonated in any official attack, let alone be the source of dozens of attacks throughout the region.** All his workers and people under him are coming up clean, too. **Then there’s a high quantity of alcohol purchased- the kind used for drinking-**” Goshen passes it over. She's looking for _Emperor._ Not the head of _Research Group Miskatonic._ (Who we hadn’t met at this point, yet. But it’s there as a hint.)
- The father is mentioned as wearing DARPA shirts- this is repeatedly mentioned, in Chapters 26 and 36.
- ‘DARPA’ is the Department of Defense's Research Group (ARPAnet/Internet came from there). He worked in Intelligence during the Vietnam war- which was centered in Korea. He mentions ‘Korea,’ in chapter 35, even though he’s said to be a Vietnam veteran. Research Group’s leader mentions: “I said I knew of those methods that were practiced in Vietnam, not that I wanted to employ them”. This implies he knows of them, not that he’s used them. Same with “Devil’s Own” formula for napalm.
- The Father was startled in chapter 26 when his son was wearing a scaled down Shil’vati clothing, and reacted negatively, even though from Elias’s perspective the father is a sympathizer.
- Elias/Emperor puts an order through research group that he has a shopping list, including certain metallurgical compounds, as he was given from touring the base and getting his new, replacement bicycle made of that material after he got run over by that private. Research Group Miskatonic reaches out to their funders in the DARPA/CIA, who reach out via Tom/Bill to reach out to Emperor when they use Gavin to get the pipes from Goshen, using Emperor’s/Elias’s specifications. Elias is correct in assuming that this kind of steel resists overheating and is extremely strong, capable of serving as a gun barrel for railgun rounds. DARPA put together blueprints for him to follow, and test their trade network via humanity’s blue collar/working class/criminal underclass, who come through for Elias/Emperor.
- We also see in 36, that thanks to him being called away from his work to pick up Elias, that same research group is late on its delivery of the cyanide micro-capsules.
- Chapter 28: He mentions having an unhealthy coping habit for his work. The head of “Research Group” mentions ‘an errand’ and later appears home with clothing for his son’s birthday. He also mentions having a daughter. Chester, PA, where Research Group is based, is a ghetto that is right in-between Philadelphia and their home in ‘Northeast Delaware.’
- Elias mentions during the Uprising on the State Capitol that it’s a mystery to him why Lissie’s father would continue going to work when the work is pointless- they’re financially set for life. Unless they’re doing something they’re not supposed to be doing, or are doing something they believe in. Elias’s father is keeping on working, because he believes in what he is doing.
- The father clearly does not share the mother’s love of the Shil’vati. While the mother questions what Elias did to provoke the Marine who ran him over, the Father did not share that sentiment.
- We also see him mention running an ‘errand’ (which is buying his son birthday clothing). He also mentions having a violent daughter, and that he is Jewish.
- He mentions an unhealthy coping habit for his work- Elias’s father has alcoholism.
- Hex offers to work for Miskatonic to make up for her error- and in two chapters, the father is talking about a new intern.
- In Wages of Sin (Chapter 58), the head of Miskatonic talks about being a father to a daughter (Jacqueline) and ‘knowing something about boys.’ It would make sense that he would principally think of his daughter- who he cares about greatly and looks after/makes sure she has everything she needs, whereas he’s utterly ignorant as to his son’s activities, and wouldn’t think to even mention him.
- In Wages of Sin (58) we see head researcher mention that the mother shared in his goals (and he implies she does not anymore.) Elias’s mother is collaborating with the aliens. The father, on the other hand, dissects the aliens. Quite at odds with each other.
- When the father finds out Elias is going to visit his sick girlfriend, he tries to discourage Elias from going, after the father almost shits himself after baking the treats that Natalie stress-ate (and then puked up, meaning her viral load/exposure was actually less than normal because a small amount of the stuff could be absorbed before she puked it back up only a minute or so later, rather than "actually digesting it.” Puking is a defence mechanism against contaminated food for a reason. But everyone just assumes it’s ‘general unwellness’ not an attempt at starting a new Shil’vati plague- and Mrs. Rakten/Morsh are out while Natalie is sickest/most contagious. The plague goes nowhere, because Elias can’t be infected.)
