- Handout p. 31 exercise 7A and B - With your partner, say sentence (a) or (b) for each number, and respond to the sentence you think you heard.
- ---
- In normal speech, is there a difference between these sentences?
- Did you see the fax that I sent?
- Did you see the facts that I sent?
- ---
- p. 33
- - These will usually sound the same, because we often drop the /t/ between another consonant and /s/ (and the /θ/, and we drop the /d/ between another consonant and /z/).
- facts - fax
- months - “muns” (but with an /s/ sound, not /z/)
- sixths - “sikss”
- friends - “frenz”
- - This also happens when the next word starts with an /s/ sound.
- p. 33 exercise 9B - Listen and repeat.
- The police need to fine someone. / The police need to find someone.
- ---
- Rule for ‘ed’ endings:
- /əd/ if the final sound is /t/ or /d/: waited, visited, needed, sided, wanted
- /t/ if the final sound is voiceless /p f θ s ʃ k/: slipped, laughed, “mathed”, missed, washed, looked
- /d/ if the final sound is voiced /b v ð z ð g y r l w/ and vowels: stabbed, breathed, boiled, stayed
- ---
- p. 34 exercise 10 - Repeat the words.
- In words like “counted” and “wanted”, we pronounce /əd/ at the end even if we don’t pronounce the /t/ sound in the middle of the word.
- ---
- exercise 11A - With your partner, decide if the past forms of these verbs add a sound (/t/ or /d/) or a syllable (/əd/).
- 3 fixed - sound /t/
- 4 improved - sound /d/
- 5 thanked - sound /t/
- 6 downloaded - syllable /əd/
- 7 ignored - sound /d/
- 8 considered - sound /d/
- 9 texted - syllable /əd/
- 10 promised - sound /t/
- ---
- “fixed something” “text somebody” - /ksts/ in the middle
- ---
