A businessman sinks $200 million into a special project to help fight Alzheimer&#39;s disease. As part of this project, medical biologist Susan McAlester rather naughtily figures out a way to genetically enlarge shark brains, so that disease-battling enzymes can be harvested. However, the shark subjects become super smart and decide they don&#39;t much like being cooped up in pens and being stabbed with hypodermics, so they figure a way to break out and make for the open sea...
Doctors in an underwater laboratory discover a chemical in the brains of sharks capable of reviving human brain cells. Using gene therapy the doctors create sharks with larger brain masses as a way to speed up the production of the life saving antidote. The result is a breed of Mako that is bigger, stronger, smarter, faster and more fierce then anything man has seen before. The sharks gain the ability to reason and turn on their masters resulting in an all or nothing fight to the finish between man and the ultimate predator.
In a floating research facility, scientists are exploring a possible cure for Alzheimer&#39;s Disease. This involves genetically modifying the brains of Mako sharks, making them super-intelligent, and much larger than normal. There are three of these sharks at the facility. Then, after a freak accident, the sharks escape. Worse still, the facility is sinking...<br/><br/>Mostly your average creature-horror movie, which is not a good thing. Plot is pretty basic: pretty standard setup for disaster, one-dimensional, cartoonish characters and some incredibly cheesy dialogue (LL Cool J gets the worst of it, with some ridiculous lines).<br/><br/>So, on the surface, nothing going for it. Yet, the story is strangely compelling. The reason for this the unpredictability of it. You can usually judge who the heroes are going to be by who among the actors has a bigger name. This movie breaks that formula, killing off people you thought would last to the final scene. Some great red herrings. Makes for some wonderfully unexpected moments.<br/><br/>Also means that it is not a given that there is going to be a happy ending, making it more interesting.<br/><br/>So, better than your average creature-horror, though not that this says much.
Scientists on a remote floating laboratory flirt with danger as they enlarge the brains/glands of several Mako sharks in the hope of discovering a cure for Alzheimer&#39;s Disease. Unfortunately the Makos (now somewhat larger and more intelligent) have other ideas and wreak havoc on all involved.<br/><br/>I enjoyed this film for the action and suspense. I&#39;m not concerned with the &#39;Jaws&#39; comparisons (in fact I welcome any movies that attempt to emulate THE ultimate shark movie).<br/><br/>The suspenseful moments, sudden suprises and body bits kept my attention and I was quite happy with the compu-shark images.<br/><br/>If only we could find some duct tape to shut Saffron Burrows up. Her monotonous speeches took some of the shine from the film. The highlight of her appearance was the the wet T-shirt scene.<br/><br/>Reality Check: All sharks must keep moving in water to keep the water passing over their gills to provide oxygen. A stationary shark is a dead shark.<br/><br/>Final thought: Makos are quite agile. You should see them leap out of the water when hooked on a line. Big, smart ones like these probably could have jumped the perimeter fence whenever they wanted to (they probably preferred to hang around for a snack).<br/><br/>I gave it a &#39;barely made it&#39; 7 out of 10.

With only 48 hours to produce results or lose their funding in their search for a cure to Alzheimer&#39;s disease using neuro-stimulating proteins from genetically-enlarged shark brains, medical biologists Susan McCallister (<a href="/name/nm0004787/">Saffron Burrows</a>) and Jim Whitlock (<a href="/name/nm0001745/">Stellan Skarsgård</a>) along with their weekend skeleton crew—marine biologist Janice Higgins (<a href="/name/nm0571537/">Jacqueline McKenzie</a>), engineer Tom Scoggins (<a href="/name/nm0001650/">Michael Rapaport</a>), shark expert Carter Blake (<a href="/name/nm0005048/">Thomas Jane</a>), meteorologist Brenda Kerns (<a href="/name/nm0878152/">Aida Turturro</a>), and chef Sherman &quot;Preacher&quot; Dudley (<a href="/name/nm0005112/">LL Cool J</a>)—receive lead investor Russell Franklin (<a href="/name/nm0000168/">Samuel L. Jackson</a>) at Aquatica, their offshore research facility, for a demonstration. The demonstration proves successful, but they discover that enlarging the sharks&#39; brains has also increased their intelligence and, with a storm approaching, the sharks take this opportunity to fight back. Deep Blue Sea is based on a script by screenwriters Duncan Kennedy, Donna Powers, and Wayne Powers. It&#39;s never outright stated. However, since the shark didn&#39;t go through the titanium fence and Scoggins swears that he locked the gates, Carter concludes that he jumped over the fence, which is why he has Scoggs raise the fences. Susan was wearing a rubber wet suit and thought that standing on it out of the water would provide her with sufficient insulation so that she too wasn&#39;t electrocuted. Carter, Susan, and Preacher make it to the surface to find that Aquatica has been totally demolished and parts of it are on fire. Carter and Susan pull themselves out of the water, but the last &quot;smart shark&quot; gloms onto Preacher&#39;s leg. Preacher uses his crucifix necklace to poke out its eye, and the shark eventually drops him. He is pulled out of the water, and Susan tends to his wounds. Carter realizes that the sharks have been herding them, getting them to flood the lower decks and partially sink the structure. He also sees that the upper fences are made of ordinary steel rather than titanium and that the shark is ramming them in an attempt to get free. The three survivors realize that they have to kill the shark so that it isn&#39;t allowed to roam the open sea. Carter fashions a harpoon containing explosive powder from flares and attaches it to a cable. It is his plan to harpoon the shark and then ignite the powder by connecting the other end of the cable to a battery. Unfortunately, the shark is still ramming the fence and is out of range. Susan cuts her hand and then jumps into the water in order to bait the shark away from the fence. When the shark comes after her, she tries to climb out of the water, but the ladder breaks and the shark eats her. Carter leaps in the water in hopes of saving her, and the shark attacks him. He grabs on to the shark&#39;s dorsal fin, and Preacher harpoons the shark, hitting Carter&#39;s leg at the same time. The shark slips through the hole in the fence, leaving Carter behind. Preacher then attaches the cable to the battery, and the shark is blown to bits. In the final scene, as Carter and Preacher lay on a piece of floating platform, a boat can be seen approaching. Carter says that he&#39;s going to quit this job, Preacher says that he&#39;s going back to the ghetto, and they both exclaim, &quot;Amen!&quot; The original ending of the movie had Susan McCallister surviving as well as being the one to kill the shark. However, during the test screenings, it was noted that the audience did not warm to her character, so it was decided to change the ending into one where Susan was eaten by a shark in a sort of Frankenstein-killed-by-the-monster scenario. So far, the original ending is not available as an alternate ending on any of the DVDs. While this may be incredibly unrealistic, one has to keep in mind that this is an action adventure, science-fiction, monster movie. With that being said, in terms of the movie, it could be said that the genetic expiermentation on the sharks mutated more than just their brains, allowing them to do things they physically couldn&#39;t before. We see that these sharks are able to swim backwards, as pointed out in the movie, sharks aren&#39;t capable of doing so. So it&#39;s possible they are also able to sit still without drowning (sharks need to constantly be moving forward or they drown).  a5c7b9f00b
