- HOW DO I MAKE BETTER COFFEE?
- There's really only two ways to go about it. You can work at more consistent control of your variables (brew time, temperature, grind size, dose/ratio, water quality, etc). Or you buy better coffee. This pastebin will show you how to do both.

- HOW SHOULD I MAKE COFFEE?
- V60
- The most popular way to make pour-over coffee. A V60 and its filters are relatively cheap and easy
- to find but pour-over in general greatly benefits from the use of a gooseneck kettle. V60 has a high
- ceiling but its learning curve is said to be steeper than other methods and it's generally less
- forgiving of poor grind quality.

- AEROPRESS
- Tried, true and near impossible to f*ck up: the Aeropress is durable, cheap and doesn't require a
- gooseneck kettle. 'Aeropress Gang' members often say an Aeropress is the perfect way for beginners
- and experts alike to enjoy a nice cup of joe.

- FRENCH PRESS
- A classic method of brewing filter coffee. French presses are cheap, easy to use and create a
- full-bodied cup that fans of this method love. Being an immersion method, french press is said to
- be more forgiving of grind inconsistencies.

- Total Brew Time - 9:15
- MOKA POT
- Another classic method, the moka pot is said to be fickle but rewarding with it's low floor and
- high ceiling. It creates full-bodied concentrated coffee some would say is espresso adjacent.
- HOFFMANN METHOD - https://youtu.be/BfDLoIvb0w4
- Constants:
- - Boiling water in the boiler
- - Full basket of coffee
- - Avoid sputtering phase by cooling down the chamber under cold water
- Variables:
- - The lighter the roast, the finer the ground.
- - Less filled boiler will brew a bit earlier. Usually, dark roasts -> a bit less water,
- light roasts -> full boiler
- - Preheat the hob/relatively low heat on the gas hob
- - As soon as the liquid starts to flow, turn off the heat. For electric hobs, move it to the edge of
- the hob.
- Troubleshooting:
- If the sputtering phase starts before you think it's time (not enough coffee out etc):
- - Too fine of a grind
- - Too much heat
- ESPRESSO
- Enjoyed by normies and snobs alike, espresso and espresso-based drinks have become one of the most
- common ways to drink coffee in the west. An espresso is a small, concentrated coffee: the product
- of finely ground coffee extruded under high pressure. It has a fairly steep learning curve and has
- traditionally been expensive to make at home but recent developments in manual machines and hand
- grinders have made espresso more accessible than ever.

- COLD BREW
- What most know as cold brew is a concentrated extraction of coffee using cold or room temperature water
- done over a long period of time, anywhere from a few hours to multiple days. The coffee is diluted to
- taste when served, and is usually served cold, with ice. Cold brew coffee is said to be less acidic
- and offers a "rounder" flavor profile. It's extremely easy to brew but you should know it requires
- much more coffee than methods with hot water. Because of this, some see cold brew as a way to use up
- stale or lesser quality beans.
- In general, if you have a decent grinder, try the following recipe:
- 1:8 Grounds to Water Ratio
- Room Temperature Water
- 12-24 Hours in the Refrigerator
- Dilute to Taste
- If you're using a blade grinder or something like that, you can try using a coarser grind and a 1:5 ratio
- of grounds to water.
- WHAT WATER SHOULD I USE?
- Water is extremely important as it's composition directly affects your coffee's extraction. Test your tap water to see if it's hard and then take the appropriate steps to filter or "make your own water". More info here: https://coffeeadastra.com/2018/12/16/water-for-coffee-extraction/
- https://coffeeadastra.com/2020/02/25/measuring-brew-water-properties/
- DO I NEED A BURR GRINDER?
- Yes. Your grinder is generally your single most important piece of coffee equipment. The quality of your grinder directly affects the quality of your brews because better grinders produce more uniform grounds. Having more uniform grounds mean you can hit extractions more evenly, creating better more pleasing brews. If you were to buy a grinder and an espresso machine, it's considered common wisdom that your budget should focus more on the grinder.
- BUT I ALREADY HAVE A BLADE GRINDER?
- A blade grinder is not a grinder. It is a blender. There is no way to dial in your grind size with a blender. Time is a variable sure, but the grounds will always be randomly distributed resulting in coffee that is simultaneously over and under-extracted (tasting bitter and sour). Retire your blade grinder for spices and buy a burr grinder.
