  14. 00:00 <Richlv> not directly related, but as per the topic, "3.2.4 plagued by ZBX-11855"
  15. 00:00 <Clement_> https://lut.im/ziR8vxgQeb/58a8HNoQ6LMXnR0f.png
  16. 00:00 <Richlv> Clement_, you should also not offer credentials to random people on the internet - they might run bitcoin miner or send spam from your systems :)
  17. 00:01 <volter> !i
  18. 00:01 <zabbixbot> [ZBX-11855] Carriage Return Causes Data Truncation During Escaping (URL: https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBX-11855)
  19. 00:01 <volter> Richlv: Oh, I'm a lovely person, trust me!
  20. 00:01 <volter> OK, the action log tells us, the problem is inside Zabbix.
  21. 00:02 <volter> Oh
  22. 00:02 <volter> "Run remote commands on host groups"
  23. 00:02 <Richlv> volter, i suspect you might be sending out some simulator spam, man
  24. 00:02 <Clement_> :)
  25. 00:02 <volter> Any chance the numbers match?
  26. 00:03 <volter> I mean the number of messages and the number of hosts in whatever host group that is?

  28. 00:03 <Clement_> i dont understand
  29. 00:03 <volter> Take a look at the operations tab.
  30. 00:04 <volter> As I said, I would set that up differently.
  31. 00:04 -!- mortis304 [[email protected]] has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
  32. 00:04 <Clement_> Indeed, the command is executed for all servers

  39. 00:06 <Clement_> i dont have issue :/
  40. 00:06 <volter> "Old" meaning what?
  41. 00:06 <Clement_> this config is same
  42. 00:06 <volter> Are you sure the operations are set up the same way?

  47. 00:07 <Richlv> well, it is a misconfiguration anyway :)
  48. 00:07 <volter> Richlv: Can you see any good reason why not to make this a regular "media type" instead of a "remote command"?

  192. 09:26 <DmitryV> hello there! Could someone advice me: do mysql partitioning enabling expected to consume a lot of CPU?
  193. 09:26 <zabbix> Hello DmitryV, and welcome to #zabbix. I'm your friendly house bot :) Please be patient when it takes a while for people to reply. See our channel guidelines on https://zabbix.org/wiki/Getting_help#IRC and have a nice stay!
  194. 09:27 <DmitryV> I've tried twice on different installations, both times CPU consuption rise and then everything collapsed, history tables SELECTs all became logged in slow.log
  195. 09:28 <DmitryV> And consider this: I've cleared them before partitioning, so history_uint was just like 3Gb!

  259. 10:58 <volter> frodox: I'm using a syslog daemon to forward all messages and Logstash to trigger the Zabbix output plugin.
  260. 10:59 -!- Cybertinus [[email protected]] has joined #zabbix
  261. 10:59 <volter> However, if /var/log/dmesg is still written to disk, you could use the agent log file monitoring.
  262. 10:59 <volter> It should be world-readable, at least it is on my EL7.
  263. 11:01 <frodox> volter, it doesn't written to disk. Ok, Looks like I need to know why/how to write it
  264. 11:01 <_ikke_> systemd-journal can forward to syslog iirc
  265. 11:01 <frodox> volter, where do you forward all logs? To ELK..?
  266. 11:03 <volter> It's actually received by another rsyslog first, but it eventually goes to ELK.
  267. 11:03 <volter> If you set up a syslog daemon on your host, systemd will provide another socket for the syslog daemon to listen on.
  268. 11:04 <volter> The file writing is then done by the syslog daemon.
  269. 11:04 <volter> Another option, which can be very tricky, is to use the netconsole kernel module, by the way.
  270. 11:06 <frodox> Ok, I'll look how to wetup syslog/rsyslog. It is more powerfull :)
  271. 11:07 <volter> You could add a "command" to rsyslog that uses zabbix_sender too.
  272. 11:07 <_ikke_> volter: How do you handle monitoring log events in Zabbix?
  273. 11:10 <Richlv> DmitryV, no, should be perfectly fine
  274. 11:10 <Richlv> mob1, which version ?
  275. 11:11 <mob1> Richlv: latest 3.2.4
  276. 11:13 <Richlv> mob1, haven't heard of any issues in that area, but haven't tested myself either. if you are sure it is missing, might be worth reporting
  277. 11:14 <mob1> yeah I'm quite sure. Will report once I'm at home.
  278. 11:14 <mob1> is there a tag/manual way to add it to template after it is exported?
  279. 11:14 <mob1> that is just a workaround
  280. 11:21 <_ikke_> mob1: the xml format uses the same property names as the API, so you could look there

  282. 11:21 <volter> _ikke_: Rare events are sent from Logstash using the Zabbix output. Other events are counted through the ES API regularly.
  283. 11:22 <_ikke_> Alright
  284. 11:22 <_ikke_> volter: When do you 'solve' these rare events?
  285. 11:22 <volter> _ikke_: In an ugly way! They are MPEG events and they just time out. But that's because I'm still on 3.0.
  286. 11:23 <_ikke_> Right
  287. 11:23 <volter> They time out through trigger dependency.
  288. 11:23 <_ikke_> in 3.2, you would manually close them?
  289. 11:23 <volter> This or MPEG itself apparently causes abnormal behaviour in action processing though, it seems.
  290. 11:23 <volter> _ikke_: Yes, I guess I'd do that.
  291. 11:24 <mob1> _ikke_: thanks

  401. 13:45 <DmitryV> Sypher_IT, stop:)
  402. 13:45 <Sypher_IT> Haha what? Why ? :P
  403. 13:45 <DmitryV> Sypher_IT, if you mean you want to manage them manually - there is no way to do it by low-level discovery
  404. 13:46 <Sypher_IT> Lunch break for me, so I'll check it up later when I come back ^_^
  405. 13:46 <Sypher_IT> DmitryV, our virtual machines are pretty much always static
  406. 13:46 <Electron^-> here the tcp dump on the pfsense during a zabbix_get of agent.ping from the server: http://pastebin.com/0s7T1NFZ
  407. 13:46 <Sypher_IT> So I want them to assign them to groups so that I can change the templates accordingly, basically windows vs linux types
  408. 13:46 <Sypher_IT> Mandated lunch break, brb 60 min
  409. 13:47 <DmitryV> Sypher_IT, you could do something manually... I'm not experienced enough so couldn't tell you how hard it will be to do so, I don't remember how vmware items are collected.
  410. 13:47 <DmitryV> Sypher_IT, my guess you just could make full copy of the discovered host into normal host, with all macroses and templates, and it should work the same, but you'll get the ability to change it as you want.
  411. 13:50 <Richlv> gleb, rhetorical one indeed. also, i like it how "how... can be TCP stuff" flows together =)
  412. 13:56 <RoyK> hi all. I was adviced to try grafana in front of zabbix, so I'm testing a bit - everything's setup to use HTTPS (like all else here), I've set the Url to https://zabbix.my.tld/ and all I get is 'Could not connect to given URL'. I've tried direct and with proxy. Any idea where to look for clues? grafana.log wasn't very informative.
  413. 13:58 <_ikke_> Anyone got a good way to have a manageble way of monitoring mulitple interfaces per host (mainly icmp)? I know you can manually assign another interface in an item, but that's easily forgotten.
  414. 13:59 <Electron^-> gleb, Richlv, the TCP flows seems normal: http://pastebin.com/0s7T1NFZ

  422. 14:03 <Richlv> _ikke_, doing that with hackish scripts at this time. something like lld for interfaces might be great - except that it would also somehow have to allow items with the same key on the same host (on different interfaces)

  475. 15:22 <DmitryV> have someone there tried alerta.io?
  476. 15:24 <MarilY> Hello! We are facing a problem that needs to make decision based on zabbix architecture. I am looking opportunities how to monitore business services separately in zabbix. For example we have a host test1.vm.kit with ip 127.0.0.3, where we monitore our standard profile like disk checks, filesystems, memory, network interfaces, performance which alerts go to directy to system administrator.
  477. 15:24 <zabbix> Hello MarilY, and welcome to #zabbix. I'm your friendly house bot :) Please be patient when it takes a while for people to reply. See our channel guidelines on https://zabbix.org/wiki/Getting_help#IRC and have a nice stay!
  478. 15:24 <MarilY> Then we have service manager who want to have only alerts of business services and we monitor those services with custom scripts.
  479. 15:25 <MarilY> For example business service on host 127.0.0.3. How to separate those alerts to different user groups? I don't what to make different hosts with the same ip, so that test1.vm.kit basic checks (127.0.0.3) go to system administrators and business services on the same host (127.0.0.3) with different host name on zabbix go to business group?
  480. 15:25 <MarilY> Then I would have different hosts in zabbix with the same ip and it would be messy. Has someone faced that situation before? Are there any possibilities to monitor business services separately on zabbix? Those checks that we monitore need zabbix agent.

  484. 15:27 <DmitryV> other way is to create virtual box as your managers likely don't care which real host they get alert from
  485. 15:27 <DmitryV> virtual hosts*. Like "business-metrics-from-127.0.0.3"

  657. 19:25 <Slashman> gentunian: not sure I follow, you talked about auth by JMX interface, doesn't this mean the same thing as host level since the JMX interface is defined here too? or are you using several JMX interface per host?

  659. 19:28 <gentunian> Slashman, for several interfaces in the same host I decided to create a host per interface. Yes, it means at host level. This is why I think it shouldn't be in item level.
  660. 19:30 <gentunian> either way, having or not having mass update you need to maintain, easily or not, username and pass for each item.
  661. 19:30 <Slashman> I guess we have similar cases, I actually monitor several tomcats on the same servers, I created several hosts (one per tomcat) and I'm using the host level variable to pass the {$JMX_USER} and {$JMX_PASS} if they are different from the default one defined in general => macro
  662. 19:31 <gentunian> Slashman, yes, mostly the same. We monitor jboss instances JVM that way

  664. 19:31 <gentunian> but instead of having a user-defined macro we decided to create a customized macro for each host.
  665. 19:32 <gentunian> so every time you create a host you don't have to remember that you need to set the user defined macro in order to use that template. But those are decisions, you know.
  666. 19:33 <gentunian> the general macro is also a good workaround. But also, I think it tends to be less autodocumented.

  707. 20:49 <Rafaga2k> phutchins: directly from zabbix-proxy theres no way to do that
  708. 20:50 <Rafaga2k> but you can do it from zabbix-server interface (web UI)
  709. 20:50 <Rafaga2k> and a time later that configuration should be replicated over the zabbix-proxy
  710. 20:50 <Elvar> picture of my discovery rules -> http://imgur.com/dqw6LyV (was 7 not 5 ;))
  711. 20:51 <phutchins> Rafaga2k: yeah, I'm automating host removal so that auto scaled hosts don't stay in zabbix forever and clutter my alerts
  712. 20:53 <Rafaga2k> another way is via ZAbbix-API or seems to be a way to do it but never tried
  713. 20:53 <Rafaga2k> https://www.zabbix.com/documentation/3.0/manual/api/reference/host/delete
  714. 20:54 <phutchins> Rafaga2k: yeah, thats the way I'm doing it now
  715. 20:54 <phutchins> but to get to the zabbix server from those hosts is not direct and not secure
  716. 20:54 <phutchins> so I'm going to add an nginx proxy to each of my zabbix proxy hosts
  717. 20:54 <phutchins> and proxy the requests to the zabbix-server api
  718. 20:54 <phutchins> that way I can use the dynamic firewall rules
  719. 20:54 <rozie> phutchins: seems to be overcomplicated
  720. 20:55 <Rafaga2k> so overcomplicated
  721. 20:55 <phutchins> ok, so undercomplicate it :)
  722. 20:55 <Rafaga2k> IMHO
  723. 20:55 <phutchins> i dont' see any other way that is secure without opening the zabbix api up to the internet
  724. 20:55 <phutchins> or
  725. 20:55 <phutchins> adding firewall rules manually
  726. 20:55 <phutchins> or setting up vpn
  727. 20:55 <rozie> just make routing/NAT on zabbix-proxy host
  728. 20:55 <rozie> so API endpoint is reachable
  729. 20:56 <phutchins> ah now i like that idea
  730. 20:56 <rozie> and limit access to API just to proxy hosts
  731. 20:56 <Rafaga2k> eah you can define who has access to the API
  732. 20:56 <rozie> (it's password protected anyway)
  733. 20:56 <phutchins> yeah
  734. 20:57 <phutchins> as long as traffic goes through the proxy host, i can control the rest with firewall rules in gcloud
  735. 20:57 <phutchins> thats just one point of access from the proxy to the server
  736. 20:57 <phutchins> and communication to the proxy is already internal
  737. 20:57 <rozie> but anyway - what will remove these hosts?
  738. 20:58 <rozie> and on what data will it base?
  739. 20:58 <rozie> you probably can run this script directly on proxy machines. or even on the zabbix server itself
  740. 20:59 <phutchins> rozie: the hsot itself will have a shtudown script that it will run
  741. 20:59 <phutchins> (which is already written and works)
  742. 20:59 <phutchins> there are hooks in gcloud that run a particular script on shutdown

  756. 21:02 <phutchins> not that i'm aware of
  757. 21:02 <phutchins> and I'd rather not bury myself in their propriatery stuff
  758. 21:03 <rozie> seems even more simple for me

  763. 21:03 <phutchins> simple seeming things are a lot of times no good when they break
  764. 21:04 <rozie> you could just add autoscaling IPs as allowed to connect to api
  765. 21:04 <rozie> no NATs etc.
  766. 21:04 <phutchins> can't
  767. 21:04 <phutchins> its across gcloud projects
  768. 21:04 <phutchins> and it'd be much more complicated to automate that
  769. 21:04 <rozie> OK :-)
  770. 21:05 <phutchins> with this solution, i add a shutdown-script metadata field in the gcloud gui, and paste the script in a b ox
  771. 21:05 <phutchins> and then proxy traffic on a part on the zabbix-proxy to another host
  772. 21:05 <rozie> BTW I will ask my question once more: what do you use to monitor hosts staying in maintenance for a long time?
  773. 21:05 <rozie> any build in Zabbix solution I'm not aware of?
  774. 21:06 <phutchins> I might just change the template that they're in and tweak severity levels or something
  775. 21:06 <rozie> phutchins: I'd add feature request to make API available on proxies
  776. 21:06 <phutchins> rozie: not a bad idea.
  777. 21:07 <rozie> this way zabbix would be more cloud friendly
  778. 21:07 <Rafaga2k> rozie : that would increase the memory footprint needed in the proxy making certains implementation difficult
  779. 21:08 <rozie> and it could probalby use the same (secure) communication channel
  780. 21:08 <Rafaga2k> the idea behind the proxy is to have a zabbix-node as autonomuos and simples as its possible
  781. 21:08 <phutchins> Rafaga2k: couldn't it be optional?
  782. 21:09 <rozie> first, it could be optional
  783. 21:09 <Rafaga2k> could be
  784. 21:09 <phutchins> and if all it does is add iptables rules, I can't see that upping the memory requirements too much...
  785. 21:09 <rozie> second, I really don't belive it will have any significant footrping
  786. 21:10 <rozie> well, if it's build in, then it's not iptables
  787. 21:11 <phutchins> many "built in" features simply control iptables

  798. 21:19 <TPAKTOP> Guys, i have offtopic question about snmp informs, any body tried to increase timeout in snmpd for confirmation trap, i have issue with duplicating traps when snmptrapd processing traps very slow
  799. 21:23 <volter> Sounds more like snmptrapd.conf or snmp.conf to me!
  800. 21:23 <volter> Or are you producing the informs?
  801. 21:23 <volter> Or am I getting everything wrong?
  802. 21:25 <volter> "confirmation trap" should probably be "SNMP response".
  803. 21:25 <TPAKTOP> default timeout on snmpd for snmp inform responce is 1 sec, in case of timeout snmpd sends duplicate traps 5 times. and i got false alarms in this case
  804. 21:26 <volter> OK
  805. 21:26 <volter> Perhaps try to figure out what's going on on the wire.
  806. 21:28 <TPAKTOP> i want to avoid such cases with slow processing or network delays with increase timeout but cant find any information about how to do it, only agentx timeout is configurable in snmpd.conf
  807. 21:28 <volter> But I'd still be surprised if snmpd is responsible for answering.
  808. 21:29 <TPAKTOP> snmptrapd is responsible for receive and answer and snmpd responsible to send and resent snmp informs in case of timeout :)
