  1. They tried to put up a good fight but the odds against them made it hopeless. They got in a few solid punches and then they were simply overwhelmed by numbers, their own blows smothered by the crush of hard bodies and the hail of slamming fists. When they went down, they were stomped and kicked by savage boots. Again and again they struggled back to their feet, only to be knocked, reeling and dazed, from one eager bandit to another.

  3. The hunter had the small satisfaction of putting two of his attackers out of action. Once he found space to swing and smashed a full-arm punch squarely into the face of the man known as Hughie. The hunter felt bone and cartilage splinter under his knuckles. The bandit flew backward, slammed into the watching Indio and both went rolling. Indio scrambled up, cursing, but the other lay unmoving for the remainder of the struggle.

  5. A minute later, the hunter was sent sprawling to the ground, his arms outflung. The one called Groggy lifted a boot to mash the gun-hand to useless pulp. With his last reserve of strength, the hunter rolled over, caught the lifted foot with both hand and twisted viciously.

  7. Groggy went into the air in a twisting somersault, yelling wildly. He came down on his back, his neck and shoulders hitting the ground with a jarring crash that left him out of breath and out of the fight.
