  1. I’ll admit it, I was a Twilight kid. The series came out when I was in high school, and while the romance of it didn’t connect with me at all, the intensity and high drama of its vision was appealing and fun, a good come-down to share with friends after Harry Potter. This paradoxical perspective - recognizing the absurdity of the books, and enthusiastically enjoying time spent with them - was, I think, one shared by many readers of the time. One proof of this is the youtube series that started around this time: Twilight: The Musical, by Gliff Productions.

  3. Twilight: The Musical is an incredible, semi-lost gem. It has the charm of a home movie made by a group of high school friends, and a script quality on par with the best feature films of the parody genre. (Most of its weakest and most juvenile content is in “part 1”, which is skippable.) Like those films, it hews closely to its source material, tweaking its inherent absurdity just enough to be laugh-out-loud funny. Take the lab scene in part 3a, which is mostly just dialogue straight from the book, delivered with the irrepressible back-and-forth cadence of a Spongebob episode, and a few sight gags on top to seal the deal.

  5. Sadly, like many grass-roots film projects, the series never made it past “part 4a”. Information on the series is scant; we may never know how they seemingly got an entire school involved in the production of a parody film. For a time, the videos were wiped from the visible face of the internet entirely. It was a glad day when whoever runs the youtube - quite possibly the “Gliff” who played Edward and created the series - opted to make them public once more. These few entries stand as a testament to making something ridiculous and fun even more ridiculous and fun.
