- Each writing task is scored (by the graders) out of 5 points. Descriptions of the score levels are on p. 386 and 419 of your DELTA book. (Speaking tasks are scored out of 4 points.)
- ---
- Explain to newer students how both writing tasks work.
- Look at the ETS scoring standards (handout).
- ---
- Integrated Writing:
- - 3 minutes to read a text
- - Listen to a lecture on the same topic
- - 20 minutes to write about the points from the lecture and how they relate to the points from the reading (You will see the reading again while you write.)
- ---
- DELTA extra test 4 - Read about brainstorming groups
- R0 (main idea) = brainstorming groups are not very good
- R1 = they aren’t as productive as individuals
- R2 = they are less creative than individuals
- R3 = conformity and groupthink (generate worse ideas than working separately)
- Listen to the lecture.
- L0 = brainstorming groups can be better if they’re well designed
- L1 = quality is more important than quantity, fewer but better ideas is a better outcome
- L2 = a group can evaluate ideas better (maybe less variety, but more certainty about good ideas)
- L3 = a diverse group (variety of skills, knowledge, and experience) generates good and varied ideas
- ---
- One common type of response is the point-by-point format
- - Introduction: summarize R0 and L0 and explain how the listening relates to the reading
- - First Point: summarize R1 and explain how L1 relates to it
- - Second Point: summarize R2 and explain how L2 relates to it
- - Third Point: summarize R3 and explain how L3 relates to it
- ---
- At first, you might just summarize the main ideas with no details, then go back and add details.
- An effective response to the integrated task should have between 150 and 225 words.
- ---
- Independent Writing:
- - Read and hear a choice question prompt
- - 30 minutes to prepare, write, and revise your response
- ---
- 1 Introduction: present the topic and explain the options you’re choosing between, state your opinion, lead-in about the reasons you’ll present
- 2-4 Supporting points: state your reason, give details and examples which show that your reason is true and that it supports your opinion
- 5 Conclusion: restate your opinion and summarize the reasons, generalize with a recommendation for the reader or a prediction for the future
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Writing practice (integrated and independent).
- Email your responses to me when you’re finished.
