- Sir Tristan did not have his shield or lance at that point, but he was well equipped with all his other arms. When he realized that he could not escape from Giglain without a battle, he took hold of his sword with which he had dealt many a mighty blow, and prepared himself to strike as soon as his opponent came to attack him. And Giglain, who did not know or fear Sir Tristan, rushed towards him as fast as his horse would go and, holding his lance stretched out, he charged at him and struck him so fiercely on his breast that his lance shattered to pieces. He did no other harm to Sir Tristan, because the hauberk he was wearing protected him on this occasion.
