happy lumpen songs

Hey Andrew! I tagged this as "hip hop" because it's the genre that recurs the most, but I included a ton of stuff that has nothing to do with it. I know you're very into like plunderphonics and trip hop and that kinda thing. I can't say I'm an expert in that music but I still did what I could to capture the right vibe. The original concept for this was that it would be mostly super short songs ranging from a few seconds to a couple minutes... eventually there was so much stuff that I just decided to let it grow and work on what I had thematically. Something else you'll hear a lot of is Latin American music... the first 10 or so tracks are practically all Mexican songs, then I sprinkle a lot more from Chile, Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Perú.

When I started making this playlist I was reading Roberto Bolaño's "The Savage Detectives" and learning about him. In a way, the playlist is also sort of a tribute to him. I divided it into 7 sections, each named for one of the last statements in his Infrarealist Manifesto. The order also sort of follows the structure of The Savage Detectives (starts in 70s Chile/Mexico, travels internationally and back-and-forwards in time, winds up in a desert).

Infrarealism was a poetic movement in 70s Mexico started by Bolaño that spins out of surrealism. It is very Latin American, very political, very visceral, and very anti-officialist. The infrarealists lived hard lives and until Bolaño's novels they were never widely known at all. I'm interested in showing that sort of roughness in my playlist... the "happy" in the title is mostly ironic, but I don't know, it doesn't all have to be so bad.

The playlist has 130 songs which is a fuckton I know!! It's been finished for a while but I didn't know how to post it because a lot of the music isn't on Spotify, lol, and I don't know how to just send you the songs in a way that isn't a complete mess. I'm putting it all on 8tracks right now and sending you the tracklist. If you have any other preferred way of listening let me know and we can work something out. I don't expect you to listen to this for seven hours lol... you can think of each section as its own separate playlist, and they're each around an hour. Feel free to skip around if that makes it easier, although I'd appreciate it if you still listened in order.
