- There are numerous examples of famous Irishmen and Italians that fought for US independence. Simply google "famous Irish/Italians of American Revolution". Irish and Italians were always considered white. The ethnic animus they received was due to them being Catholic, poor, and the Italians having large concentrations of literal Anarchists immigrating among them.
