Snowy Morning

A very small drabble commission for aprecisionperson, who asked for Ruby and Nora playing out in the snow!

						Chapter 23. Snowy Morning

All that Saturday morning, Beacon's campus had been alive with excitement at the first snowfall of the season.

Most students had longed to sleep in on the cold morning, but there were two girls in particular who hadn't allowed their teammates the luxury.

Ruby had jumped out of bed and zipped about the room, squealing and shaking her teammates and jumping on their beds. With the help of Zwei's excited barking, she'd managed to get them all up and out of bed and begrudgingly dressed in their winter coats.

Across the hall, Nora had done the same for her own team, at some points demanding and almost threatening that they go outside to play in the snow with her.

They'd all eventually complied, some less willing than others, but nonetheless, both teams were outside now in the frigid winter air, dressed in coats and boots and scarves of all colors.

Yang occupied herself by making jokes with a red-nosed Jaune, while Blake and Ren sat on a bench beside Pyrrha and Weiss to take it easy for the morning, chatting casually.

And of course, the two remaining girls were darting about the snow-covered courtyard like red and pink bullets, chasing one another in the most intense snowball fight in Beacon's history thus far.

Ruby's cloak snapped out in the wind behind her as she evaded Nora by mere inches.

"You'll never get me!" she boasted, veering off to one side in a sharp turn.

Nora skidded and changed direction.

"We'll see about that!"

She bent down to scoop up a handful of snow, pounding it into a solid block of freezing ice before hurling it after her target.

Ruby laughed and gave a mighty jump into midair to dodge it, though as fate would have it, the snowball followed a course leading directly into Jaune's face. He fell over unceremoniously with a strange, Jaune-like sound. Yang guffawed before offering to help him back up.

Nora saw she'd missed Ruby yet again and growled.

"Drat! You're quick, I'll give ya that! But I'm queen of the ice castle here!"

Ruby turned around to run backward, taunting her opponent.

"Mm, nah! I think that'd be Weiss! Hey, guys! Come help me!" she called out to her team.

"You, too, my servants!" Nora hollered. "Help your queen defeat this speedy red terror!"

But all of their teammates politely declined.

"Pass," grunted Weiss.

"I think you've got it under control," Blake called.

"Yeah, go get her, sis!" Yang encouraged.

Meanwhile, Jaune was wiping snow chunks from his face.

"Ugh, sorry Nora..." he mumbled.

"You can do it!" Pyrrha cheered.

"You got this," Ren added.

And so the two girls were left to their own rather destructive devices, building up mounds of snow as makeshift "forts" to hide behind, or in some cases, to intentionally plow into so that snow would explode in all directions.

Nora kept tossing snowballs and Ruby kept dodging them, sticking her tongue out and laughing all the while.

She countered with a few snowballs of her own, but rather than dodge them, Nora punched and kicked them to bits.

They trampled the entire courtyard, filling the air with squealing giggles and echoing battle cries as their teammates watched and admired their energy at such an hour and temperature.

But even Ruby and Nora couldn't spend too long roughhousing before breakfast.

The winter morning battle ended in a stalemate as both girls skidded to a halt, panting and smirking.

"Truce," said Nora, offering her pink-gloved hand. "We can continue after Ren makes us all some pancakes."

"Sounds good to me!" Ruby piped. She accepted Nora's hand, red patting pink.

Their respective teammates sighed in relief and were eager to get back inside.

But it wasn't long afterward when they were all dragged back outside and made to compete in the team-on-team snowball fight of the century.
