盘古开天辟地时，天上有九个太阳，把大地整天晒得热烘烘的，房子晒着火了，河水干涸了，人晒得更是受不了。玉皇大帝知道了，传下玉旨，派二郎神下凡除掉太阳。二郎神带着天狗来到凡间，一口气吃掉了八个太阳。

When Pangu created the heavens and the earth, there were nine suns in the sky, and scorched the earth. Houses caught fire, rivers dried up, and humanity could not bear such heat. When the Jade Emperor knew of this, he assigned Erlang Shen to get rid of the suns. Erlang Shen brought Tiangou (Heavenly Dog) to the mortal realm, and in one breath eight suns were eaten (note: while the text isn't specifically clear on which one of the two eats the suns, it's likely the doggo just due to Tiangou's legend).
