- The Cabin in the Woods plot was established as part of the "Points of Interest" mirkwood enhancement that introduced some 8 or 9 locations for plot hooks in central mirkwood. Plot was headed up by Ancalagon. What follows is a summary of events:
- Note: this should all be visible on the rpa/mirknotes virtual boards
- 1. Orcs are roaming through Mirkwood. Icarus loads "trail" of pies leading to the cabin. Orcs pick up on the trail and follow to the cabin itself. They enter, and an old woman is standing behind a large table, greeting the orcs happily and offering them pies. One thing leads to another, the orcs attack the woman, and she turns into a large female troll doing a fair amount of damage to the party. They slay the troll, explore the cabin. Underneath the cabin in a cellar is a large larder filled with corpses hanging from meat-hooks, some half-butchered. It is inferred the pies were made from them. They loot the area, introducing the new craftable chainmail, and as they are about to leave one of the dead corpses begins to move. This is one of the draugr mobs that Anc created for our Orephor plotline, and we hooked this plot to that. Players slay the draugr and leave.
- 2. Humans come across the trail of pies several days later, and Anc RPAs an event of the humans coming across the cabin. There are more draugr encountered from the cellar, and players resolve to burn the cabin.
- 3. Humans return to the cabin to destroy it. Draugr troll (specialized mobile) explodes from the burning cabin, beating the players to hell and nearly killing several. The players successfully slay the draugr boss. I'm a touch fuzzy on the exact plot details, but as I understand it, the draugr boss itself is the physical incarnation of the spirit of Orephor's General. The exact name slips my mind at the moment, but I don't believe players are familiar with them specifically. As they have slain his body once more, the spirit is released back to the mirk, and it is implied that the spirit will return again in the future, likely in another form.
- Several questions might be raised:
- 1. Who was the witch?
- A. Unknown, possibly just a hedge witch within the mirk. Another possibility is that she was a normal woman who was taken over by the spirit of the General, attempting to lure the unwary in to provide more vessels for the spirits of the fallen elves.
- 2. Gunnbjorn's Sword was involved, right?
- A. Yes, Gunnbjorn's sword was echoed before the plot to have the runes of power on it that anchor the spirit of the General (remember the General is different from Orephor himself) to the world. Until the sword is destroyed, the General will always return. If the General himself obtains his sword once more, he will be anchored more fully to the world and become significantly dangerous. Players have so far been unwilling to destroy the blade. The power of the blade is the power of the General.
- 3. Is the cabin still there?
- A. I believe tasks were spun up to destroy it through descriptions. Not sure if this has been done.
- 4. Draugr?
- A. The fallen bodies of men, elves, and others that have been occupied by the spirits of fallen elves seeking to return to the material world. There are a number of varieties, including "fresh" ones who are likely bandits or tomb-raiders who the spirits occupied during life, and older ones who can be traced back to elven or human burial mounds in Mirkwood. The three "statues" in Mirkwood (they are at the intersection of the "legs" of mirkwood to the main areas, you can enter them) are such tombs. Check them out, there are nifty echoes within them. (as a note, those statues were created by the elves as barriers between the power of the darkneing of mirkwood, but obviously they didn't work).
- 5. So, is the plot done or ongoing?
- A. As far as players are concerned, this plot is wrapped up. There are still hooks that future RPAs can utilize to continue and advance the plot. The spirit of the General is still roaming the world, and needs to be slain at some point. This was designed to be the initial phases of the larger Dwarf Watch plot, which is detailed in various places.
