A taste of brandy
The Princess handed me a bowl of something clear and oily. I sipped and coughed. 'It's not rice wine, but it is from the East,' she said. 'They have fiery plums, there, and I am experimenting with them.

The drink tasted like all the spices in the market - as if a camel had got loose and kicked over a few stalls. Seeing my face, the Princess grew defensive. 'I have just begun this line of enquiry,' she said. ‘But it's fine. I have a teacher. He is knowledgeable. More so than anyone.'
