  40. SUMMARY:Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band
  41. DESCRIPTION:When Conor Oberst fled the mid-western winter for Tepoztlan\, Mexico in early 2008\, his plan was to record a collection of songs in beautiful surroundings with some friends. The band he put together for the recording sessions (all done in an adobe house half way up a mountain) was released last year as Conor Oberst\, his first non-Bright Eyes release since 2001. The band then took to the road as Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band\, named for Valle Mystico where the recording took place. While touring in support of Conor Oberst\, the talented 6-piece began to write new songs\, each band member sharing their compositions and working them out on the road. Energized by the live performances\, and eager to capture the synergy they felt onstage\, Oberst took his musical compadres to Sonic Ranch Studios in Tornillo\, Texas outside of El Paso to capture these gems on tape. In recording sessions in November and December 08 The Mystic Valley Band recorded 16 songs and this time they shared the songwriting. The result\, the sparkling Outer South is the first album credited to Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band and features the fruits of their enticing musical symbiosis. Oberst’s songwriting and delivery remain an engaging presence\, but the addition of songs by Taylor Hollingsworth (guitar)\, Nik Freitas (guitar) and Jason Boesel (drums) make for a multi-textured and colorful collaboration. Along with Oberst\, Hollingsworth\, Freitas and Boesel\, The Mystic Valley Band includes Macey Taylor (bass) and Nathaniel Walcott (piano/keyboard).   Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band - Website | Myspace | Facebook |Twitter MiWi La Lupa - Myspace | Twitter | You Tube Shoot The Moon Down - Website | Facebook | Bandcamp

  112. SUMMARY:Tumbleweed Wanderers
  113. DESCRIPTION:Oakland\, California’s Tumbleweed Wanderers combine soul\, folk\, and rock and roll to create a hugely dynamic musical experience. They weave through their shows with smooth transitions\, bringing the listener from dark chaotic banjo-rock\, through intimate acoustic harmonies\, to energetic explosions of soul. Since forming in April of 2011\, TW have been bringing their electric shows to an increasingly wider audience\, from their early performances at small bars and cafes\, to becoming a major local headliner\, selling out shows at the Bay Area’s best venues such as Great American Music Hall and Bottom of the Hill. Since recording their debut full-length album\, they have entered a period of near constant touring\, starting on the West Coast\, but now including all of North America\, most recently opening for Angus Stone at renowned venues in the US and Canada. Tumbleweed Wanderers recorded their debut album\, So Long\, at indie rocker John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco\, with Vanderslice himself producing the album. Recorded to tape and released on vinyl as well as on CD and digitally\, So Long captures the band in a raw\, live state reminiscent of recordings from the pre-auto-tune era. The album is meant to bring the listener on a two part (Side A and Side B) psychedelic musical journey\, through its dynamism and gapless transitions\, also including additional singers and horns. Getting much of their early momentum from their memorable\, loud and energetic acoustic street performances (including mandolin and trash can kick drum) outside of large Bay Area concerts\, the band continues to busk these shows when in the Bay Area\, but also brings their street performance on the road\, often surprising unsuspecting pedestrians with a level of performance uncommon on the streets of most American towns and cities.   Tumbleweed Wanderers – Website | Facebook | Bandcamp | Instagram

  124. SUMMARY:Neil Hamburger
  125. DESCRIPTION:Despite his appalling comic timing\, muddled delivery\, and cliched material\, stand-up Neil Hamburger nevertheless emerged as one of the most acclaimed and name-checked comedians of his generation; like Lenny Bruce before him\, he was a hipster icon whose trailblazing riffs defied conventions at every turn\, transcending the confines of hilarity with kamikaze recklessness. Prior to his ascendance\, comedians were expected not only to be funny\, but insightful as well; Hamburger changed all that forever\, in the process earning so much respect from our cultural tastemakers that his records appeared exclusively on only the most rarefied indie-rock labels. A native of Culver City\, CA\, Hamburger began his comedy career on the advice of his psychiatrist\, who suggested performing as a means of therapy; packing his belongings into a Los Angeles storage locker\, he mounted a relentless touring schedule\, claiming to play upwards of 360 nights a year yet somehow earning a nagging reputation for last-minute cancellations. Following a gig in Needles\, CA\, Hamburger was approached by manager Art Huckman\, a longtime showbiz svengali whose past proteges included Rich Little and the Ritz Brothers; with Huckman at the helm\, the comedian’s career blossomed\, and in 1993 he appeared on the Great Phone Calls compilation. Hamburger’s solo debut\, the Looking for Laughs EP\, followed a year later\, and after issuing Bartender\, the Laugh’s on Me on the tiny Planet Pimp label\, he moved to Drag City for his 1996 full-length debut\, appropriately titled America’s Funnyman. With 1998’s Raw Hamburger\, he shifted gears\, working “blue” for the first time; ever the restless innovator\, Hamburger then turned topical for the follow-up EP\, Tribute to Lady Di\, a heartfelt homage to the late People’s Princess. Although the constant grind of touring ultimately forced the breakup of the comic’s marriage\, he forged ahead\, expanding his itinerary to include international gigs as well; for 1999’s Left for Dead in Malaysia\, he even faced a non-English speaking Kuala Lumpur crowd. Hamburger remains the iron horse of comedy\, touring non-stop\, releasing new albums like 2000’s Inside Neil Hamburger\, and\, one hopes\, continuing work on his long-planned religious comedy LP\, Laugh Out Lord. His connections to Amarillo Records honcho Greg Turkington remain unclear.   Neil Hamburger – Website | Facebook | Twitter

  136. SUMMARY:Ensemble Dal Niente
  137. DESCRIPTION:On August 11\, Omaha’s experimental classical series presents Ensemble Dal Niente as they make their debut appearance in Nebraska\, featuring Ryan Muncy (saxophone)\, Jesse Langen (guitar)\, and Amanda DeBoer Bartlett (voice). Splitting the bill with the local experimental theatre group ætherplough\, this show will feature today’s most cutting-edge composers at the Slowdown. The program will feature previews from ætherplough’s new\, completely original work The Archeology of Birdsong\, as well as works by David Lang\, Fausto Romitelli\, Marcos Balter\, and more brought to you by the fearless Ensemble Dal Niente. The Decibel Series (dB Series) brings cutting-edge composers and performers from around the country to Omaha\, celebrating alternative classical music\, virtuosic performances\, and the work of living composers. Ensemble Dal Niente is a Chicago-based contemporary music ensemble dedicated to the promotion and advancement of contemporary music through concerts\, commissions and educational activities. Through innovative programming\, Dal Niente explores the wealth and diversity of music composed in the past century — from the European avant-garde\, to American high modernism\, to styles influenced by popular music and jazz. Dal Niente was founded by composer Kirsten Broberg in 2004 at Northwestern University and has become one of the country's leading new music organizations. Its members believe that we live in a unique and inspiring musical era and are committed to fostering a positive and vital creative interchange. The ensemble presents the best of music being written today by established\, emerging\, and as-yet-undiscovered composers. It commissions new works\, gives countless premieres\, and champions great but neglected compositions — all in addition to regularly performing contemporary and 20th century masterpieces to bring this exceptional music to audiences. Founded in 2008 by Susann Suprenant and Thom Sibbitt\, ætherplough was formed in response to a need to create context for contemporary performance in Omaha. The three-fold mission: create\, produce\, present is our invitation to Omaha area artists of all backgrounds and Artists from around the country to explore Omaha as a rich site for contemporary performance. 208. SUMMARY:Chuck Prophet
  209. DESCRIPTION:In some parallel dimension Chuck Prophet is a star\, though for the real-world fans he’s amassed over the past three decades he may as well already be one. Certainly Prophet stands as a revered writer’s writer\, earning the respect of such peers as Lucinda Williams and Alejandro Escovedo. (The latter’s last three records were co-written with Prophet.) His catalogue is overflowing with insightful character studies\, jangle-pop perfection and energetic rockers. In his 25-plus-year career\, the 49-year-old has established himself as a minor god in the roots-rock pantheon. Chuck’s career in music began much like the careers of others. He was a kid with a guitar. Here’s the difference: by the time he was fifteen years old he could do more with it than most would be able to do in a lifetime. Legendary producer and musician Jim Dickinson (The Rolling Stones\, The Replacements\, Big Star\, Bob Dylan) was once asked how this kid could pull off the stuff he did. Dickinson simply replied\, “What do you expect from somebody who got his cherry popped at the funny farm when he was fourteen?” For most of his life\, San Francisco has been Chuck Prophet’s muse…or more accurately\, his drug of choice. “It can suck you under. That first hit. It really does a whammy to you. And if you’re like me you can find yourself chasing the San Francisco dragon for the rest of your life. That’s what ‘Temple Beautiful’ is about.” The music itself combines the provincial street poetry of Lou Reed with roots-riffs and the jangle of power-pop\, all propelled with a passion and soul that lifts the project well past its personal scrapbook blueprint. And that’s really the gift of a great storyteller: to make memories public\, to make friends out of strangers\, to take something specific and transform it into something universal. Over the past several years\, Prophet’s music has been heard in several hit television series including “True Blood” (HBO)\, “Californication” (Showtime)\, and “Sons of Anarchy” (FX). He also co-wrote all the songs on Alejandro Escovedo’s 2008 critically acclaimed album “Real Animal”. 256. SUMMARY:The Giving Tree Band
  257. DESCRIPTION:Led by enigmatic brothers Todd and “E” Fink\, The Giving Tree Band are making their way to the head of a classy class of young American songwriters and performers. The Finks extended their brotherhood to all 7 members and started out with only a collective heart as big as the ocean. They now wield a wide array of instruments from acoustic and electric guitars\, slide guitars and banjos to violin\, mandolin and pedal steel. A band’s band\, they all live together\, travel together and do everything as one family\, harmonizing their voices and lives on and off stage. The Giving Tree Band is not reinventing but simply reuniting rock and roll. With their down-home style\, they emphasize the virtue in their fierce virtuosity – playing each note with integrity\, each part with humility\, each song with honesty and each show with gratitude. The most common word among reviews is “undeniable” in regards to the chemistry on stage\, the energy in the room and the feeling that something special is happening. With a rare combination of stirring musicianship and exemplary songwriting\, the GTB wheel is in full spin and\, like their heroes before them\, it’s also on fire. 316. SUMMARY:Tie These Hands
  317. DESCRIPTION:Tie These Hands are based out of Lincoln\, NE and came to be when Aram and Naum were in high school. They recorded their first album Wearing Red in 2002\, taking three days off in their senior year for studio time. The band went on to play many regional shows\, and a year later released a split CD with a local instrumental band named Mr. 1986 on Redemption Records. Tie These Hands continued to build local buzz for the next five years\, and then slowed down in that time after the Stauffer twins got forced out on their own\, as paying bills cut into touring and recording budgets. In 2006 they were approached by a promoter friend from Springfield\, MO. who was starting a label and wanted them for an album. In 2007 they released We Work Out on Workers Unite! Records and were joined by current member Ryan Phillips. In 2011 they were contacted by Kilk Records in Japan\, and put out the full-legth album\, Come On\, which they are now self-releasing in the U.S. Tie These Hands - Myspace | Facebook Eli Mardock - Website | Facebook | Twitter | You Tube

  340. SUMMARY:Jim James
  341. DESCRIPTION:“I take walks a lot\,” says Jim James\, “and as I walk\, songs kind of build in my mind\, and I start adding and subtracting things. So I had a full vision for a lot of the songs on this album before I even recorded one note.” These visions have now manifested as Regions and Light and Sound of God\, the first solo album from the singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist for My Morning Jacket. Over the course of fifteen years and six studio albums\, James has been the focal point of a group that has grown into one of the most acclaimed and successful rock and roll bands in the world. With this project\, he reaches into new territory that extends\, but doesn’t break from\, MMJ’s accomplishments. James has maintained a steady\, bordering on voracious\, flow of work alongside the band’s recording and touring. In 2009\, he released the Tribute to EP\, with his versions of six George Harrison songs. He has also lent his voice to albums by the likes of the Decemberists\, the Roots\, America\, Booker T. Jones\, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, and recorded and toured with the Monsters of Folk—which teamed him up with Conor Oberst\, M. Ward\, and Mike Mogis—and participated in this year’s Woody Guthrie tribute album New Multitudes and its accompanying shows alongside Jay Farrar\, Will Johnson\, and Anders Parker. But until now\, James had never felt the call to create a longer-form album on his own. “I’m very lucky to play in a band with guys that I love\, who are great at what they do\,” he says\, “so on MMJ records\, I don’t have a need to play bass or keys or what have you. But as a person and as a musician\, I love to play every instrument under the sun\, and I wanted to make a record where I played all the instruments and engineered it myself.” As much as James was interested in exploring new sonic directions\, he was also drawn to a different kind of process\, something he could control as an individual rather than as part of a band. “I wanted to make a record right away\, instead of making demos for a record and then recording\,” he says. “I would just start building on ideas from the ground up\, at my own relaxed pace. I used the ‘building block’ method\, laying down one piece at a time myself—to build a tower or a house—whereas in MMJ we make a sound that’s all of us playing together\, more of a live performance type of thing\, although several of the songs on this record were captured in live performance\, too.” The location also helped inform the feel of the recordings. “I fell in love with the stories of Les Paul and Mary Ford recording in their home\, as well as thinking of Sly Stone slouched down in an armchair\, smoking a cigar in a rented house for There’s a Riot Goin’ On\,” says James\, explaining his choice to record at his home studio in Louisville. “I wanted to make it comfortable and make it homey homey.” The results are nine songs that resist easy categorization\, from the hazy space-funk of the opening “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” to the chiming\, operatic pop of “A New Life.” On Regions of Light and Sound of God\, nothing is what it seems—touchstones from old-school R&B or island folk or hip-hop flicker into focus and then disappear; a delicate instrumental is titled “Exploding.” It’s complex but cohesive\, intimate and hypnotic where My Morning Jacket might turn more wide-screen and epic. “I wanted the album to sound like it came from a different place in time\,” says James. “Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future\, if that makes any sense—like a hazy dream that a fully-realized android or humanoid capable of thought might have when it reminisces about the good old days of just being a simple robot.” James says that his inspiration comes from many directions\, but mentions Marvin Gaye’s incomparable classic What’s Going On as a perpetual influence (it might be felt strongest in the soaring concluding track\, “God’s Love to Deliver\,” in which the singer addresses Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.). “To me\, it’s the greatest record of all time because it speaks to everyone\, of any race or creed\,” he says. “It speaks to the soul and the body; it uses all forms of music\, merging soul and funk with rock and classical; it is nameless gospel\, holy essence. I always want to try and make music like that.” For Regions of Light and Sound of God\, though\, there was one specific source that shaped many of the songs\, and even figures into the album title—a pioneering 1929 graphic novel called God’s Man\, by Lynd Ward. Told entirely through wordless woodcuts\, the book chronicles an artist’s struggle with temptation and corruption\, along with finding true love. As work on the album proceeded\, James was inspired to write music that could accompany the book. “God’s Man came to me at a very important time\,” he says. “Some of the things happening in the book were happening to me in real life\, in a very strange and painful\, then a very beautiful way.” Also meaningful to James was the fact that the album gave him the opportunity to work with Dave Givan\, who played most of the drums on the record. Givan has been a friend since childhood\, and was part of the first band James ever played with\, Mont de Sundua. He and James also currently co-host a radio show called “Sir Microcosm.” Now James is facing the challenge of finding the musicians and arrangements to conjure the sound of Regions of Light and Sound of God on stage. “I’m currently putting together the band to bring this to tour in a fun\, celebratory\, and danceable way\,” he says. Solo albums by members of bands\, especially lead singers\, can often be scattershot\, collections of odds and ends built up over the years with no true sense of purpose. But Regions of Light and Sound of God is precisely the opposite—the clarity with which Jim James came into this album rings from first note to last. “The album knew what it wanted to be\,” says James. “The songs would tell me what they wanted to be\, and I just had to search around and find those sounds to bring them into this world.” Jim James – Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | You Tube

  364. SUMMARY:Chuck Ragan
  365. DESCRIPTION:Simply put\, they don’t make musicians like Chuck Ragan anymore. For nearly two decades Ragan has traversed the country and the world—first with his celebrated punk act Hot Water Music and later as a solo troubadour—to bring his music to the masses. Correspondingly\, aside from the seemingly endless singles\, splits and collaborations\, Ragan’s third solo album Covering Ground is as much of a love letter to his transient lifestyle as it is a concession to the loved ones he often has to leave behind and is also undeniably his most honest and accomplished album to date. Featuring longtime friends and tour mates\, fiddle player Jon Gaunt and bassist Joe Ginsberg. In addition are guest performances from the Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon\, Squirrel Nut Zippers’ Chris Phillips\, Frank Turner\, Audra Mae\, Lucero’s Rick Steff and Todd Beene as well as Blind Melon’s Christopher Thorn\, who also engineered\, produced and mixed the project. Covering Ground is the sonic equivalent to Jack Kerouac’s On The Road and could only be created by someone bred into road life and who requires a release like this in order to stay sane doing it. “The majority of these songs were written on the road\,” Ragan explains. “We’ve been running hard and burning the candle at both ends for years. It’s been amazing in many ways but just as well extremely harsh when you end up making a massive amount of sacrifices to sustain in that type of nomadic lifestyle.” This duality lies at the core of Covering Ground and when Ragan sings about “ten cylinders that fire and a woman at the end of the road” on the driving acoustic song “Wish On The Moon\,” it’s dripping with so much authenticity that it’s hard not to imagine yourself behind the wheel alongside him. “Writing has always been a form of therapy for me and something that I feel like I need to do rather than something I’m supposed to do\,” Ragan responds when asked where the fire behind these songs originated. “Since 2005 I’ve focused more on my own music than ever before\,” he continues\, “I’ve been consistently writing\, learning and reflecting and not so much worrying about whether I finish a song or not but more so keeping myself moving with it no matter what. Whether it’s heard or not\, I find that I simply need to get things off my chest in that way to take the next step forward\, contribute or pay tribute to the pioneers that paved the path the majority of us take.” Chuck Ragan – Website | Myspace | Facebook | Twitter

  400. SUMMARY:The Growlers
  401. DESCRIPTION:The growlers are a rock and pop group formed in long beach California in 2006 who are yet to became one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music. During their years of stardom yet to come\, the band consists of Brooks Nielson (vocals) Scott Montoya(bass guitar\, vocals\,)\, Matt Taylor(lead guitar\, vocals) and Brian “don’t surf” Stewart (drums\, vocals). They were managed by their own alter ego Epstein until his death in 2009. Although their initial musical style was rooted in 1960s rock and roll and skiffle\, the group works with different musical genres\, ranging from ice flossing hip hop to psychedelic rock. Their clothes\, style and statements have made them trend-setters. While their growing social awareness saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions. During the release of their first album and their ongoing singles releases\, they have experimented with recording techniques that have the ability to bend sound in ways only drugs can. By now this “bent sound” has been perfected in their live act that some onlookers call “groovy” and or “sick”. The groovy unexcelled value in Lo fidelity sound is their stock and trade. They are the result of a combination of skilled modern engineering techniques and the very finest outdated recording and amplified equipment. The Growlers sound is best exemplified through Nielson’s cryptic lyrics and the relationship it has with matt Taylor. As if the two are each other’s half. Though they complete each other\, they compel and challenge one another in ways only the frequent growler fan can truly understand. Perhaps it is what the growler fan feels while taking part in the drug wave of bent sound. 424. SUMMARY:Hey Marseilles
  425. DESCRIPTION:Five miles south of downtown Seattle is the neighborhood of Columbia City—a leafy stretch of old brownstones and new condos which\, according to local legend and loosely interpreted census data\, boasts the most diverse zip code in America. Not far from Columbia City’s main drag\, amidst a swirl of languages and colors and food and accents\, sits a 100-year-old\, two-story house that’s home to the world-weary\, six-piece orchestral-pop ensemble known as Hey Marseilles. World-weary in spirit if not in practice: Hey Marseilles first won hearts across the US with its 2010 debut\, To Travels and Trunks\, an album that reveled in the education and inspiration only globe-trotting exploration can provide. With Matt Bishop’s lyrical wayfaring abutting an instrumental palette that embraced folk tradition—accordion\, strings\, and horns; gypsy\, Gallic\, and classical—To Travels and Trunks gave musical voice to the universal longing for unfettered freedom. NPR called the record “sublime and heartfelt.” A lot has changed in the world since 2010—that house in Columbia City\, for instance. The vacillations of the economy allowed Hey Marseilles violist Jacob Anderson to acquire it in 2011; he and his younger brother\, cellist and producer Sam Anderson\, helped renovate it. Since then\, most of the band has lived in it\, and the entirety of their new album was written and recorded in it\, or nearby. (Other recording spaces included a tunnel in Seattle’s Golden Gardens Park\, a mostly abandoned brick office building\, and a church sanctuary\, all because of their advantages for the band’s acoustic instrumentation.) Not surprisingly\, Lines We Trace is not about going out and searching. It’s about finding you’re already where you need to be. Make your way back home again\, Bishop sings on the dusky ballad “Café Lights.” I am here still. “These songs articulate a sense of longing\, but it’s a longing to appreciate what’s in front of you as opposed to finding meaning in somewhere or someone else\, “ says Bishop. “It’s about finding and creating home where you’re at and as you are.” The 12 songs on Lines We Trace represent a band steady enough in its sound—poignant\, panoramic\, unreservedly gorgeous—that it can expand beyond it. The string section that hums throughout “Elegy”—quintessentially sweeping\, Hey Marseilles style—shifts into finely composed abstraction for the song’s final minute. Colin Richey’s skittering rhythm on “Bright Stars Burning” is a gentle breakbeat\, a sly nod to atmospheric drum ‘n’ bass. “Madrona” and the album-closing “Demian” are Hey Marseilles’ first fully instrumental songs\, a pair of echo-laden piano-and-cello dirges that are simultaneously solemn and sumptuous. “Dead of Night” trots along on an almost funky\, waltzy swing and gives the album its titular lyric\, trumpet triumphant as Bishop sings\, The lines we trace have a thousand ends/We’ll count the ways we can’t begin/And stay in our homes\, remain on our own… Throughout\, Philip Kobernik’s accordion is less pronounced than previously\, Nick Ward’s guitar more so. The result is less old-world\, more new school. “With our first record\, we were inspired by traditional folk instrumentation and arrangements\, but at our core we were trying to make solid pop songs\,” Bishop explains. “We see this album as a continuation of that goal\, but we hope the arrangements reflect our maturation as musicians and songwriters.” An update. A progression. A musical analog to a line in “Looking Back”: If you’re looking back that’s all you’ll ever see. Six years after Bishop first got together with Kobernik and Ward to jam at Seattle’s Gasworks Park\, Hey Marseilles is an experienced band with a slew of major festivals (Bumbershoot\, Sasquatch!) and a national tour under its belt. They’ve come a long way—only to find themselves back home. Put another way\, as Lines We Trace suggests\, sometimes you don’t have to go far to find a meaningful experience. Sometimes the comfort of the familiar is all you need to grow. Hey Marseilles - Website| Facebook | Twitter The Apache Relay - Website | Facebook | Twitter

  436. SUMMARY:Langhorne Slim & The Law
  437. DESCRIPTION:There is nothing like the challenges and camaraderie of the road to inspire a songwriter who thrives upon the emotional energy and exhilaration only travel can deliver. Some singers are devoted to the pursuit of perpetual motion\, and Langhorne Slim releases his wild soul in ways that come out of the discipline of live performance. The 13 songs that compose Langhorne Slim & The Law’s new The Way We Move are road-tested\, rollicking and very rock ‘n’ rolling tunes that the songwriter perfected with his loyal band\, and come out of the kind of good times and bad experiences that songwriters of Langhorne’s lofty stature can turn into life-affirming rock ‘n’ roll. You could also call what Langhorne Slim does folk music\, but then there’s his sly\, charming and open-hearted feel for pop music—those summertime melodies that nudge you into a grin even when the song is about something bad. For Langhorne Slim—Pennsylvania-born self-taught guitarist who moves to Brooklyn at 18\, begins feeling out his place in a burgeoning punk-folk scene\, wends his way to the West Coast\, and finds himself celebrated from Newport to Portland as one of today’s most original singers and songwriters—The Way We Move represents the sound of a band devoted to living in the moment. Riding the success of his 2009 full-length Be Set Free\, Langhorne went through some changes over the last three years—he lost his beloved grandfather\, who is the subject of the new record’s moving “Song for Sid\,” and moved on from a relationship that had lasted five years. And there was the physical moving—the literal side of the record’s title. Pulling up stakes from his home of two years\, Portland\, Ore.\, Langhorne also has been touring non-stop with The Law. As he says\, “I’m in a bit of a transitional period—currently\, the road will be home. That’s just kind of my spirit\, to be slightly restless.” Perfecting their rangy sound out on the endless grey ribbon\, Langhorne and The Law— bassist Jeff Ratner\, drummer Malachi DeLorenzo and banjo player and keyboardist David Moore—went down to rural Texas in the summer of 2011 to work on new material. With some 30 tunes to consider\, the quartet soaked up the Lone Star sunshine and developed arrangements and approaches for Langhorne’s latest batch of songs. Jeff Ratner had joined the group at the time of Be Set Free\, and brought on multi-instrumentalist David Moore not long after. Moore and Ratner go way back\, having moved to New York around the same time\, and they’ve played together in what Jeff estimates are 15 bands. Langhorne’s association with Malachi is equally deep. As the group played together through tours with the Drive-By Truckers and the Avett Brothers\, and made appearances at the Newport Folk Festival and Bonnaroo\, their bond became ever stronger\, their music more confident. This is what you hear on The Way We Move—forward motion meeting deep cohesion\, all in the service of Langhorne’s amazing songs and compelling vocals. “We wanted Langhorne’s songs to shine\, and be as raw as the creatures that we are\,” Jeff says of the recording process. The band set up in the Catskill\, N.Y. Old Soul Studio\, a 100-year-old Greek Revival house retooled for recording. With studio owner Kenny Siegal co-producing\, Langhorne & The Law fearlessly ran through an astounding 26 songs in four days\, with Langhorne putting finishing touches on new tunes as they recorded. Langhorne says it was an intimate affair in Old Soul\, with Moore’s “banjo room” in a coatroom and the piano in the living room. It comes through on The Way We Move—the live feel of the sessions\, which found Langhorne singing along with the band on every track. “Singing with the band that way\, it’s almost like I was performing on stage\,” he says. Cutting everything live to tape gave the band exactly what they’d been looking for: a super-charged evocation of their raucous\, friendly stage performances. Langhorne and Jeff value in music for its rawness\, and it doesn’t matter whether that rawness—the insurgent spirit that unites the Clash and Charlie Poole—comes from in punk\, country\, soul or folk. Langhorne is a fan of Porter Wagoner\, Jimmie Rodgers\, Waylon Jennings\, and early rock ‘n’ roll in general. But there’s nothing referential or detached about the music Langhorne & The Law make. Langhorne writes songs that are yearning\, sad\, happy\, defeated and optimistic\, with hints of ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll balladry. “We all love Wu-Tang Clan as much as we love Bowie\, or Brazilian psychedelic pop\,” Langhorne says. On The Way We Move\, David’s probing piano often provides focus for Langhorne’s tales of love and loss. “On the Attack” begins with a delicate\, watercolor section that turns into an ingenious variation on a classic soul ballad—Solomon Burke meets punk blues in a smoky folk club. Langhorne addresses it to a current or past love. Similarly\, “Past Lives” sports a piano introduction that gives way to a melancholy 6/8 ballad that perfectly supports lyrics about possible past lives and their interaction with the present. It’s a spirited\, inspired slice of real rock ‘n’ roll—exuberance meets hard-won experience in an explosive combination. David’s banjo and Malachi’s walloping drums add up to a new kind of folk music. The music drives\, but there’s no loss of subtlety. And when the group lays into the garage-rocking “Fire\,” with its funky electric piano and supremely callow lyrics about first kisses and the hot-burning passions of adolescence\, it’s clear Langhorne is one of the great rock ‘n’ rollers of our or any time. Road-tested as the band is\, the new music also shows just how far Langhorne Slim has come as a singer. He croons\, exults and sings the blues throughout The Way We Move. And there are his lyrics\, which are about strange dreams featuring women who want him dead even as he desires them\, the pressures of small-town life\, ambition\, and how much he appreciates his mother’s love and support. That’s all Langhorne and his life—his mother\, he says\, really was amazingly supportive of his ambitions to become a musician\, as was the rest of his family. It comes through as you listen to his virtuoso demonstration of a singing style that seems alive to every fleeting emotional shade of meaning. Langhorne puts you in mind of John Lennon’s singing from time to time—it’s nothing exact\, and Slim doesn’t do much music that is very Lennon- or Beatle-esque\, but it’s something in the timbre\, and the openness of his vocals. It’s worth repeating here that Langhorne learned Nirvana songs as he began to explore the guitar and songwriting\, and Kurt Cobain’s intense singing is another reference point. But these guys don’t play the reference game\, and like to keep it raw. The new record moves in ways that are fresh for Langhorne Slim & The Law\, and demonstrates all the ways we can go forward while keeping an eye on the mirror. They’re laying down the law. It’s very American\, and when Langhorne Slim contemplates whether or not he fits in to any narrow-cast definition of this country’s music\, he replies with a perfect\, laconic joke: “I think we fit in most places that would take us.” Langhorne Slim & The Law - Website | Myspace | Facebook | Twitter | You Tube Jonny Fritz - Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

  448. SUMMARY:Man Man
  449. DESCRIPTION:It's hard to imagine what looked worse: the night a sleep-deprived\, Ambien-addled Ryan Kattner hallucinated his way into a motor bike accident or the afternoon an electrician checking out his sublet's faulty wiring walked into his room and found nothing but a boar's head\, half-drained bottles of booze\, scattered tax forms\, a Wurlitzer\, a frame-less mattress\, and writing on the walls. (They were song lyrics\, but still.) "He was severely freaked out. A haunted\, wordless\, freaked out. Maybe I wasn't living very sanely\," says the Man Man frontman\, who also goes by his keyboard-clobbering alter ego Honus Honus. While it's easy to nervously laugh at the absurdity of it all now\, Kattner's personal life got so dire a couple summers ago that he found himself wondering whether music was worth it anymore; whether a mounting pile of heartbreak\, the heaviness of several friend's tragic deaths\, and IRS bills outweighed the need to express it all on stage or in the studio. "It's funny\, because in the past\, I was able to take bad situations and turn them into something creative\," explains Kattner. "This time I couldn't at all. I felt nothing\, which was worse than feeling miserable or depressed." As a black cloud hovered above his head on the east coast\, Kattner did what many aimless artists have done before him--he put most of his possessions away in storage and lived out of a suitcase. His wandering took him to Los Angeles\, Austin\, Portland\, and wherever else a friend had a couch\, floor space\, and patience to spare. In the end\, it took many months for the singer/multi-instrumentalist to pick up the pieces and funnel an endless procession of love and loss into the demo stages of Man Man's fourth album\, Life Fantastic. But once the breakthrough moments started kicking in\, he had no choice but to soldier on. Take what happened on New Year's Day not too long ago. Already a few months into some actual songwriting\, Kattner stumbled into his very own after school special\, best summed up by a new song... "If I razor cut some bangs\," he howls in "Dark Arts\," clawing at the album's most unhinged arrangements\, "Will I forget who I am? Stare at the man who's in the mirror; how the fuck did I live this long\, this way?" "I sent my father a demo of that song\," says Kattner\, "and he called me afterwards to hear my voice. Make sure I was on the level. Everything about it sounds unhealthy\, from the words to the vibe itself. But at the same time\, I needed to get it all out of my head." The exorcisms didn't end there\, of course. Thanks to a renewed sense of purpose\, the songwriting for Life Fantastic continued throughout the past year alongside promising sessions with the rest of Man Man: Drummer/Percussionist Chris Powell and multi-instrumentalists Billy Dufala\, Jamey Robinson\, and Russell Higbee.. Which isn't to say that things came together quickly. Contrary to the shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later rep of the group's live show\, Man Man records have always involved months--or in this case\, years--of refinement to reach a level everyone's happy with. For instance\, it took an entire day--literally two nine-hour stretches--to develop just two verses in the aforementioned "Dark Arts." "That's just the way that I work\," explains Kattner. "I usually have to sing something at least 300 times before I bring it to the band. I work on the melody and the cadence\, but I also want a delivery that feels real. I have to be able to sell what I'm saying\, even if that mean sitting there with one verse on repeat." Not every song was the sonic equivalent of giving birth\, however. Life Fantastic's title track is one example of every last piece falling into place perfectly\, from subdued bursts of brass and swooning strings to a piano progression that literally dances circles around anyone within earshot. And then there's "Steak Knives." Easily one of the most beautiful\, barebones cuts in the Man Man catalog\, it sounds like a cavernous confessional set against creeping chords and heart-sinking chorus lines. Simply put\, the thing's gonna make at least one person cry this year. To add to the considerable headphone candy quotient of the entire LP\, Life Fantastic is the first Man Man album with a proper producer behind the boards. And not just any knob-twiddler\, either. We're talking Mike Mogis\, the Bright Eyes member responsible for the widescreen backdrops of nearly every major Saddle Creek release. "The songs were fully-formed entities by the time we got to Mike's studio\," says Kattner\, "But he was there to say things like\, 'Okay\, that's a bit much.' He was able to help us carve the beauty out of the chaos we brought. It wasn't whittling down the points; it was sharpening them so they'd puncture even deeper." Mogis was also there to fulfill any random requests the band may have (a gang chorus here\, a childlike melody there\, even some field recordings) and flesh out their flashiest ideas with the delicate string arrangements of fellow Bright Eyes member Nate Walcott (see: the climatic close of "Oh\, La Brea" for Man Man at their most cinematic). All while maintaining the order ab chao ethos that's been at the core of Man Man since their rail-jumping 2004 debut\, The Man In a Blue Turban With a Face. "I want us to be the kind of band you could bring home to your parents\," says Kattner\, "but at the same time\, they're worried you might steal or break something. And you know what? They appreciate you for that very reason." Man Man - Website | Myspace | Facebook | Twitter

  460. SUMMARY:Widowspeak
  461. DESCRIPTION:Widowspeak is an American band comprised of Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas\, known for its dreamy\, western-tinged take on rock and roll. The outfit formed in 2010 and released two singles in 2011 (Harsh Realm\, Gun Shy) followed by a debut album (self-titled) in the summer of that year\, all on Brooklyn label Captured Tracks. Widowspeak was praised for its reverential spaciousness\, Hamilton’s haunting voice\, and Thomas’s spindly\, Morricone-esque guitar lines; both drawing on 1950’s pop ballads and 1970’s psych\, creating languid call-and-response melodies. The band then toured extensively\, wearing in their warm\, nostalgic sound. Widowspeak began to write what would become their second record\, Almanac\, at the start of 2012\, as popular fears of the apocalypse became imminently close to realization. Though not totally convinced of catastrophic disaster coinciding with the year’s conclusion\, Hamilton nevertheless began writing lyrics seeped in doomsday imagery\, darkness and dread\, inspired by the idea of such a universal experience of the end. The two started making demos in their practice space. Thomas shaped the ideas into songs\, experimenting with denser arrangements and grander gestures. Black and white became Kodachrome\, subdued became saturated. Widowspeak explored Appalachian melodies and desert rhythms\, Saharan to the Southwest\, as well as incorporated acoustic instruments and slide guitar\, stemming from a shared love of Neil Young. As the compositions were brought to life\, they became something new\, something unlike the fatalistic seeds from whence they’d grown. These songs were no longer concerned with the end of the Earth\, but with the life and death of seasons\, youth\, love\, and the cyclical nature of all things. The band chose the name ‘Almanac’ in tribute to those annual tomes which have eternally provided predictions of weather patterns\, lunar and solar movement\, and astronomical phenomena. But the songs are also about the changing times we find ourselves in: “the good old days” at odds with the hyperactive present\, and the sense of loss\, but also adventure\, which that provides. The album was recorded by Kevin McMahon (Swans\, Real Estate) in a hundred year old barn in the Hudson River Valley of New York State during the transition from summer to fall. Producing with McMahon\, Thomas expanded on the band’s demos\, crafting layers of guitar\, Rhodes piano\, organ and harmonium. Almanac was released by Captured Tracks on January 22\, 2013. If Widowspeak’s first record serves as a collection of postcards\, sent from destinations traveled to in that first transformative year\, then their second is the guidebook written after they’d found their sonic home and inhabited it fully. 472. SUMMARY:Cold War Kids
  473. DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles four-piece Cold War Kids elevate their passionate take on indie rock with their emotionally-raw fourth album Dear Miss Lonelyhearts. Formed in 2004\, the band's breakthrough debut Robbers & Cowards was released to considerable acclaim in 2006. The darker Loyalty To Loyalty followed two years later\, and 2011's Mine Is Yours introduced deeper anthemic qualities to the eclectic group's catalog. Dear Miss Lonelyhearts\, which features the rollicking\, energetic single "Miracle Mile\," is Cold War Kids' first release with former Modest Mouse and Murder City Devils guitarist Dann Gallucci\, who also handled its production alongside Lars Stalfors. "We were shaken up\, ready to let certain songs go further than before by trying new styles and arrangements\, while keeping others sparse and caring more about the finished product and less about how we got there\," explains frontman Nathan Willet about the ten-track album\, which was recorded at the band's private studio in San Pedro\, CA.
