- Take 10 minutes to answer the questions about Mumbai.
- - On a timed test like the TOEFL, it is a good idea to start answering questions as soon as possible, even if you haven’t carefully read the full text yet. It’s better to skim the text quickly to get a general idea of what it’s about, and then start looking for the answers to specific questions.
- ---
- When you’re finished, compare your answers with your partner. Why do you think your answer is right and your partner’s wrong, if you disagree? (Find specific information in the text.)
- 1 b
- 2 a
- 3 c
- 4 b
- 5 a

- Colonial India: a f

- “gist” = main overall idea (I would not call question 1 a gist question, it’s just another fact/detail question, or perhaps inference.) (There aren’t really gist questions for TOEFL reading, but they are common in listening.)
- detail (fact) - specific information from the text
- (negative fact - detail questions with words like NOT or EXCEPT)
- inference - a reasonable guess or conclusion based on the inforamtion you have (but it’s not stated directly)
- purpose - questions about why the author wrote something
- classification/organization - organize statements into categories based on the reading (On the TOEFL there are always two additional answer choices that are not used.)
- ---
- Other types of question (using a DELTA practice test):
- summary - choose the three most important ideas from the passage
- vocabulary - choose the word that is closest in meaning
- paraphrase/sentence restatement - choose the sentence that is closest in meaning
- sentence insertion - Where does a new sentence best fit in a paragraph?
- reference - What noun does a specific pronoun refer to?
