- >You are the lead role in a hit TV series airing in Monstergirl City
- >You play the part of a powerful mage liberating the continent from the influence of Deruella
- >Season after season, you have met several actresses who serve as your companions
- >After every season, one actress is always replaced by the other, never to be seen again
- >You try not to get too sad after each season
- >But to be honest, you always wish you could get to know just one of them more
- >Such is life in Monstergirl City
- >Or so you tell yourself
- >One day, you hear tell of a new girl to replace the latest companion
- >She is apparently a Doppelganger
- >A very famous one, at that
- >Very few people know her real name, so most simply call her by her stage name, “Double”
- >The producers plan to cast her for the next season and see how she fares
- >If they like her, she’ll be here to stay
- >Since she can change her appearance, she can be cast for several parts in the series
- >Probably the higher-ups’ way of saving themselves money
- >First few months go by
- >Her occasional critique of your acting and your refusal to take it cause a bit of friction between the two of you
- >Overall, however, she seems to enjoy her work
- >Seeing her dedication to her job, you decide to take her advice during an especially powerful scene
- >The director loved it
- >You would later find that that week’s episode had the highest ratings by far
- >But for now, you want to treat Double to dinner to celebrate the episode’s success
- >That night, you take Double to dinner with you
- >The two of you are able to have fun and engage in some manner of trivial conversation
- >Eventually, you apologize to her for your initial stubbornness and, while you’re at it, give her credit where it’s due
- >She can’t help but chuckle as the takes a sip from her drink
- >“It’s about time,” she says with a grin
- >“Listen,” she starts, “I may be a greenhorn at this show compared to you, but I’m still willing to help.”
- >She gently jabs you with her elbow
- >“I’m not here to be your competition, you know? I’m just playing my role. I’m your partner, remember?”
- >She had a point, she did
- >If she was indeed going to be here for the long haul, you were definitely going to have to make friends with this woman
- >“And besides…” she added, beginning with a slight blush, “I-I’ve been watching the show for some time…before I got casted.”
- >Strange, you thought
- >By the look of her, you wouldn’t have taken a girl like her to be a fan of the series
- >When you first started, it was just another gig, another job that paid
- >The first few co-stars had the same idea too
- >But for her, it was something far more than that
- >“So,” she extended her hand out to you, “let’s work together…partner.”
- >With a newfound respect for your new companion, you shake Double’s hand
- >Somehow, you would tell that this was the start of a long journey for you
- >Within those next few months, you had forged a sort of tight friendship with Double
- >You two pushed each other to give only your best time after time
- >Scene after scene
- > Episode after episode
- >Together, you had made the show gain more ratings by the week
- >It was to be more popular than Game of Pharaohs or Two to Matango
- >But of course, as with every season, you reached that point
- >The point where your partner was to be replaced
- >This time, the mage’s companion was turned into a succubus by Deruella’s forces
- >Knowing there is no cure for her, Double pleads for death by your hands before she turns on you
- >Although conflicted between killing your only friend and letting her keep her pride, you know what must be done
- >You look her in her weak, struggling eyes with sadness as you pull your knife from your belt
- >As you embrace her deformed body, you slowly raise the knife over your head
- >“I love y--”
- >Before you could hear her finish, it was too late
- >You had plunged it deep into her back, holding her tight so that she couldn’t escape
- >Her words caused something in you to click, and with it tears flowed from your eyes
- >She bled out, dying with your arms around her, and hers around you, her head resting peacefully on your shoulders
- >You embrace her lifeless body hoping that somehow, someway, there would be something more you could do for this poor girl
- >But there wasn’t, and even your tears wouldn’t bring her back
- >“Aaaaaaand CUT!!!”
- >“Amazing, you two, simply amazing!” the director shouted so enthusiastically through his bullhorn
- >The director’s eyes were watering, though he tried not to let it show
- >“Take five, everyone.”
- >As the staff began to disperse, you chuckled a bit trying to regain some composure
- >You wipe away your tears as Double wipes the fake blood from her lips
- >With an excited grin, Double tells you “Nice going, partner!” before giving you a peck on the cheek
- >Wait a minute
- >She kissed you on the cheek
- >Most likely even sooner than you, she realized what she had done
- >The two of you stare at each other for what must’ve felt like an eternity at that moment
- >Soon enough, with eyes wide, face red, and lips pursed, Double quickly gets up, storming off in embarrassment
- >Wanting to know what happened, you try to follow her
- >She doesn’t stop to answer you until you two are alone, isolated from the rest of the staff on break
- >At which point, before you can say anything, she interrupts with a chuckle
- >“That was stupid, wasn’t it?” she says, lightly scratching the back of her head
- >“Yeah. That was pretty stupid,” she said, answering her own question, “I totally went overboard back there.”
- >You were going to ask what she meant before you began to figure it out yourself
- >Back then, when she said those words in the middle of the scene
- >Now that you think about it, you don’t recall seeing that line in the script
- >Did the director ask her to say the line as a last minute change to the script?
- >Or maybe…
- >As you think about it, she continues to deride herself
- >“I guess I should get going or--”
- >“You know,” you say with a start
- >“There’s still more work to do today, but it’s the season finale and all, so…”
- >You put a hand on her shoulder and give her a kind smile
- >“What do you say we celebrate later, huh?”
- >Her eyes beam with joy as her face becomes even redder, if that’s even possible
- >With a wide smile growing on her face, she gives a big nod in reply
- >“Yeah…That would be nice.”
- >During the few months between seasons, you and Double had eventually started dating
- >She was every bit of amazing offstage as she was on the set
- >Somehow, you couldn’t help but count yourself lucky
- >Especially considering that the one thing you had been wishing for all along had fallen into your lap
- >But not only did you find the love of your life in Double
- >From her, you had finally found a love for your work
- >You had realized that those days you spent with Double made you somewhat happier than you could’ve remembered being in the past
- >Although, with the new season coming, your now dead partner would have to be replaced
- >And who better to replace her than…well, herself?
- >You could swear it was part of the higher-ups’ plan to save money
- >But as far as you were concerned, you were happy with it
- >And despite her new appearance, you loved her all the same
- >And you would admit it, both onscreen and off
- >Midway through the season, you would become engaged to her
- >And for as happy as she was when you showed her that ring, you were even happier when she finally whispered her real name in your ear
- >As the seasons passed, and the show went on, staff and cast would come and go
- >But the two of you would stay for a long time
- >And every season, you would express your love for each other
- >And every season, she would leave you once and for all, only to come again in a new form
- >But only you knew what Double truly looked like, underneath her many faces
- >After all, she was your wife now
- >And as they say
- >Such is life in Monstergirl City
