  1. >"You've disappointed me Anonymous."
  2. >Daud, master assassin, paces back and forth in front of you.
  3. >You are bound in chains, and are held on either side by two assassins you used to call brothers.
  4. >This particular back alley rarely sees any activity, and the fact that it's night time is enough to provide concealment.
  5. >Daud looks pissed, and you can't blame him.
  6. >"Not only did you let Corvo slip through our defenses, but you let him take my valuables. I would imagine he was trying to send me a message."
  7. "That he could kill you if he wanted, but chose not to."
  8. >"Precisely. Now Anonymous, what was your job?"
  9. "To lock Corvo away and make sure he didn't get out."
  10. >"That's right, and what did you do?"
  11. "I left my post."
  12. >"You left your post."
  13. >Daud brings a hand to his chin. After a moment he shakes his head and laughs, "You were one of my best Anonymous. Tell me before I kill you. Why did you leave Corvo unattended, knowing how much of a threat he was?"
  14. "Nothing I say would make the outcome any different. I'll hold my tongue."
  15. >Daud shakes his head, "I see."
  16. >Then you feel a blade sink into your back.
  17. >You look down and see the sharp end sticking out of your chest.
  18. >Blood rises in your throat, and you cough.
  19. "If I were you Boss... I would make sure I'm dead before you walk out of this alley."
  20. >The last thing you see before you black out is Daud's smile.
  21. >That little girl... Emily. She was worth every bit of this.
  22. -------
  23. >Your eyes open, and the first thing you notice is that you aren't in Dunwall anymore.
  24. >You are laying on some sort of stone surface, encircled by pillars.
  25. >When you sit up, you recognize it.
  26. >It's where you kidnapped the little girl, and where Daud drove a blade through the Empress' gut.
  27. >The stone canopy is all that seems to exist. The world outside of it seems endless and cloudy.
  28. >"So here we are."
  29. >You look up at the voice.
  30. >Floating above you is the man himself, The Outsider.
  31. >His eyes are black, and he appears to be a young man in his twenties, but you know better.
  32. >"I hope you got a good look at what you helped create."
  33. "What I helped create?"
  34. >The Outsider smiles and floats down to the ground. He walks to you and leans down to eye level, "Don't play coy with me Anonymous. I gave you these powers to use as you saw fit, just like every other person I've given them to. Daud's little... order of Assassins has become boring to me."
  35. "No wonder it's been so hard to find trainees."
  36. >"Indeed. I was busy watching Corvo's progress. You should have seen him move. I'm sure a few of you could learn a thing or two from him."
  37. "What does any of this have to do with me?"
  38. >"That little girl got into your head Anonymous. Isn't that why you left the post when you'd been ordered to guard Corvo?"
  39. >The Outsider grins and stands, spreading his arms out, "And now look at Dunwall. The city is on the cusp of a glorious golden age, all because you gave one man the chance to escape. With the plague gone and the corrupt politicians being weeded out, I'd say Daud is about to be out of the job."
  40. >You can't help but laugh.
  41. "So what is this crap? You wanna give me a medal or something? I did what I felt like doing, nothing more and nothing less."
  42. >"No... not a medal" He locks his eyes with yours, "Something far more valuable than a silly piece of gold pinned to your shirt, two things, actually. You've been left to die by the man who took you in from the street as a child. Daud is not a father, and he showed you no soft side."
  43. "He picked me because of my bone charms."
  44. >"Because you had contact with me, and he saw in you the potential to be a professional killer."
  45. "What can I say? I'm good at what I do."
  46. >"I'm going to give you a chance to get revenge Anonymous, revenge on Daud."
  47. "I'm not one to hold a grudge."
  48. >He shakes his head, "If you decide not to, then that's your business, but perhaps a little incentive would help?"
  49. "I'm listening."
  50. >"Daud plans on killing Corvo, and the little Empress as well. Now, normally I wouldn't interfere, but I am extremely interested in the direction Little Emily and her personal bodyguard will take the city in. First of all, you'll need this."
  51. >He holds up a hand, and from thin air appears what looks like a heart. It beats at a steady rhythm, and seems to run with small gears and other mechanical parts.
  52. >"This is the heart of a living being, and I'd venture to say that you need one right now."
  53. >He leans down once more, and pushes the heart towards your chest. It passes through your skin as if there's no barrier, and the pain you feel is horrid.
  54. >You let out a scream you've heard all too often.
  55. >The scream before death, the scream of pain.
  56. >When it's over, and you have regained your vision, The Outsider nods, "My second gift is a hint."
  57. >You can't reply, your chest still hurts and you're having trouble breathing.
  58. >"The powers that I've given you... they are more flexible than you could possibly conceive. The teachings have been lost, but as others have demonstrated, that cannot keep them from discovery."
  59. >You wake up with a hole in your chest and a newly beating heart.
  60. >Your body scrambles for air as you struggle to your feat.
  61. >The wound isn't bleeding, but there's already enough blood there, soaking through your brown assassin's cloak and dripping to the ground.
  62. >Your heartbeat slows, and you hear something in the back of your mind.
  63. >A woman's voice.
  64. >'Go, before it's too late.'
  65. >You break into a run.
  66. --------
  67. >Dunwall tower is heavily guarded, but it's not the first time you've snuck in. You're sure that it'll be child's play for Daud.
  68. >The master assassin's only obstacles are you and Corvo, and you're pretty sure he's not getting away from your blade.
  69. >Even if he does, Corvo will not make the mistake of leaving him alive a second time.
  70. >The hill leading up to the tower is covered in dead guards.
  71. >You sneer, no skill at all, he's not even trying to be discreet anymore.
  72. >He's letting his anger at Corvo blind him.
  73. >He clearly brought a few of the order with him, and they are just as stupid.
  74. >Just like when he bum rushed the Empress.
  75. >You would have had the blade in her throat, the girl in your arms, and would have been gone before anyone knew what had happened.
  76. >But Daud was the leader, you had to listen to him.
  77.
  78. >Not anymore.
  79. >The guards at the front door of the tower are dead too.
  80. >You forgo subtlety and go into a full sprint, kicking open the doors of the tower and leaping into the lobby with your blade at the ready.
  81. >You hear the clang of steel before you see its source.
  82. >Daud and another Assassin are fighting off a guard.
  83. >The other Assassin he brought lies dead at the foot of the fight.
  84. >You sneer.
  85. "Am I late to the party?"
  86. >Daud buries his blade in the throat of the remaining guard and turns to you with widened eyes, "How..."
  87. "I told you to make sure I was dead, Boss."
  88. >You reach into your belt and pull out a throwing knife in the blink of an eye, aiming right for his throat.
  89. >He dodges it with no effort, but hitting him wasn't your intent.
  90. >You feel the power of The Outsider coursing through you as you cast a spell.
  91. >You body vanishes, and you appear right in front of Daud's partner, digging your blade into his throat.
  92. >The familiar gurgling sound as he struggles to breath... you've become used to it.
  93. >You yank your knife out and Daud runs like the coward that he is up the red carpeted stairs of the lobby.
  94. >The two of you make it to the highest room of the tower with several guards on your tail.
  95. >Daud's gone into panic mode now, all he cares about is finding his target and killing him.
  96. >Daud bursts into the Empress' room and you hear the girl scream.
  97. >"You!" shouts Corvo, "I thought I was pretty clear!"
  98. >Daud doesn't reply, he simply screams like a madman and charges Corvo.
  99. >You kiss the hilt of your knife and throw it by the blade.
  100. >It lands in Daud's back.
  101. >The guards tackle you to the ground as your former master falls to the floor in death.
  102. >You're grinning like a madman.
  103. "I told you to make sure I was dead!"
  104. >You can't help but laugh.
  105. >Your heart is racing faster than it ever has before now.
  106. >You've never been so thrilled about landing a kill.
  107. >You look up and you see Corvo, holding a frightened Emily. The grin never leaves your face.
  108. "Saved your ass."
  109. >"Shut up," shouts a guard, increasing the weight on you.
  110. >"Let him go," says Emily, "He saved us."
  111. >"But... Empress."
  112. >You're not sitting here while they debate on letting you live. Your new heart is still hammering like crazy in your chest, and you think you can hear The Outsider's song in the back of your mind.
  113. >You're not meant to be captured here.
  114. >You close your eyes and cast a simple teleportation spell.
  115.
  116. >Everything goes apeshit.
  117. >The gust of a tornado rips through the room, and the guards are thrown from your back.
  118. >The last thing you hear before you feel the lift of the spell working is an indiscernible shout from the girl you just saved.
  119. -------
  120. >Two mares make their way to the entrance of the Everfree forest, both with startling jewelery around their necks and manes that would put the elites of Canterlot to shame.
  121. >Their cutie marks are familiar to everyone in Ponyville, and quite a few ponies in Canterlot as well.
  122. >A Diamond Tiara, and a Silver Spoon.
  123. >"Tiara, are you sure we should be here?"
  124. >Diamond Tiara scoffs, "Please, father is out of town, so who else will supervise construction."
  125. >"Right, but remember what happened last time."
  126. >"Ha, if I didn't know any better Silver Spoon, I'd say you're getting soft on me."
  127. >Silver Spoon falls silent.
  128. >"That's what I thought. Father was going to buy the land from the Apple family fair and square, and when those... 'hicks' refused, he had to find an alternate means."
  129. >Again, Silver Spoon doesn't reply. She simply follows her friend into the entrance of the dark forest.
  130. >She learned a long time ago that going along with what Diamond Tiara wants is better than being on the receiving end of her wrath.
  131. >They walk and walk down the forest path, and much to Silver Spoon's surprise nothing tries to leap out and kill them on sight.
  132. >The place is still spooky though, and she'd much rather be somewhere else entirely.
  133. >It isn't until they reach a small, swampy clearing that something happens.
  134. >The winds starts to pick up.
  135. >And pick up.
  136. >And pick up.
  137. >It's all the mares can do to stay on their feet.
  138. >There's a flash of light, and Diamond Tiara starts screaming, running back the way they came.
  139. -----
  140. >You are Anonymous.
  141. >And you just landed in what looks like a murky ass swamp.
  142. "Great, now I have to get checked for the plague again."
  143. >You eyes your surroundings, and notice you're not the only thing that the teleportation spell grabbed.
  144. >A large trunk lies at your feet.
  145. >You bend down to open it up...
  146. >"Um... who... what are you?"
  147. >You look up at the sound of a frightened voice, and your eyes widen.
  148. >The creature is horse-like, but much smaller, and much more... personable.
  149. >The voice could have only come from her.
  150. >It is a her, you hope.
  151. "I'm not quite sure how I should answer that question."
  152. >"So you can talk."
  153. "I'm more surprised that YOU can talk."
  154. >You both just stand there and stare at each other, trying to figure out what you're seeing.
  155. >You've seen some weird shit happen in Dunwall, but this...
  156. >This takes the cake
