Description of the Wonderous Sign

Which happened on Monday, January 25, 1630, on the feast day of the Conversion of St. Paul, in the evening from 7 to 10 PM, in the night sky, facing north.

Including a detailed report on the star that appeared the following Tuesday around noon.

Both are truly described with all circumstances, and for the sake of remembrance, printed at the request of the author.

After the apparition of the luminous orb six years ago, which has not yet vanished, and now, the appearance of another sign, a wonder in the sky last night, various opinions have been expressed by many, each believing his own interpretation, and most of all, those who are least capable of reasoning, discuss this most often. As the proverb says, "To every admiration, vanity clings." And yet, not only have hundreds of people seen this, but I myself, the least of men, have witnessed this wondrous sign with my own eyes, and not only that, but I had also heard about it earlier than many others. I saw it in the sky, and when it appeared, I stood there for a while, along with many others in our houses. I saw it, as well as I could, and without being obstructed by houses or roofs, for four hours, and I drew a detailed account of this phenomenon on paper with ink and lead.

Therefore, I have been persuaded by some prominent people to make this record available to strangers as well, who did not have the chance to see it. I am all the more willing to do this, because it was not only a worthy sight in itself, but also, something to be remembered, and therefore worthy of being shared. So that it is never forgotten, and that people will hope for the mercy of God.

Concerning the Wonderous Sign

It was the will of God Almighty, that these miraculous acts are not to be observed, recognized, praised, and handed down to future generations. And thus, He placed this spectacle in the world theater for us to behold, so that we, who have been gifted with the gift of reason, are not like animals, just looking at it. Therefore, I will describe this wonder with a solid basis, as faithfully as I can, and with the events in the correct order. As I myself have seen it, and recorded in my journal, I will follow the order of events, which I saw for myself. However, people with better eyesight and understanding are better suited for this! Those who were standing on a higher place, with a free horizon, and who were not obstructed by glass lenses or anything else. It is only by them that it can be described with more precision.

Firstly, a little before 7 PM, while I was observing the stars, according to my custom, I was looking at the clear sky and the twinkling stars, and, after a long observation, I turned my eyes toward the north and west. Then, a snow-white, bright, cloudlike shape appeared, which I can't really call a cloud. Because it was not as fluffy and fragmented as other clouds, nor did it disintegrate into patches as normal clouds do. It was, instead, smooth and polished, like a bright reflecting surface, but for all its brilliance, it had a distinct shape, and it flickered and flickered again. It was bright and luminous, and it outshone all other clouds. All other clouds are dark and homogeneous, but this one was of a uniform bright nature, and it was so brilliant that it outshone all others.

Because this marvel, which I have seen, is something worthy of great interest and amazement, let us not forget to consider the work of the wise Creator in all this. But, for the sake of completeness, I will add my own initial opinion on this issue, which I held at the beginning. And since Tycho Brahe, the noble astronomer, described how the tail of the comet in 1577 was directed, not towards the sun, as is customary, but toward Venus, this gave me further cause to think about this. I even remember seeing this myself not so long ago, but I haven’t seen it lately.

But this is not the most amazing thing about this phenomenon. The incredible brightness of the phenomenon, which I observed in the first appearance, is what fills me with doubt, which seems to be the sign of a meteor. This should make anyone think of a new age, as it has been reported by the newspapers. Those who are unfamiliar with the wonders of the sky might think it’s just a common cloud, but I observed it very carefully and saw that the sun was low in the constellation Aquarius. It was already setting, and the moon, at its last quarter, was already low in the constellation Scorpio, even lower than the sun. So, it is impossible, by the laws of nature, for a cloud to be illuminated by two celestial bodies at this angle and with such brilliance.

Therefore, it is beyond any doubt, that this is not a natural phenomenon. I must add, however, that I was greatly surprised by the exceptional brightness of this sign. Now, about the star during the day

The French have a saying: "The star does not shine at noon." They mean that a lesser person cannot compare to someone of greater stature. It is clear that the stars do not shine during the day, because the sun’s light overshadows them. But God decided to show us something else that day. It is a very special occurrence, because this star appeared on Tuesday, at noon, in broad daylight.

I myself did not see this star, but I had heard others talking about it. While I was writing about the previous event, I heard this news, but did not think much of it, because people often misunderstand the stars, especially the rarer ones.

But because this event was described by so many trustworthy people, I wanted to learn more about this, so that we don’t fall for a simple explanation, but rather, recognize this as a true wonder of nature. So, I went to the place where this star was seen at night, and I investigated this matter thoroughly.

Here’s what I learned:

    This particular location was shadowy and darkened by nearby buildings, so the sun could not shine there. This makes it easier to see a star in the daytime, because the sunlight is obstructed. The experts also say that if you look into a deep well during the day, you can also see the stars, because the sunlight is blocked. These new telescopes with the dark lenses are also better for observing objects, as the dark glass filters out the light. Of course, the reason why our eyes are black on the inside is because the light is filtered by the dark color.

    All those who were present agree that they saw a star in this location.

    This event happened on Tuesday at 11 AM, and lasted until 2 PM.

    It wasn’t always visible, as the clouds kept covering it at times. However, when the clouds parted, it was clear, and it was visible for a long time.

    This star moved in the shape of a small bird, which was flying and then stationary.

    The star was about the size of the stars in the constellation Ursa Major, or maybe a little bit smaller.

    The star was white or pale in color, and not yellow.

You might be wondering where this star was. Well, I got a reliable answer from a skilled surveyor who had a good vantage point for observing, and he was certain about this, as he had a good sighting instrument with a compass. He looked through a scope, and he saw a star at a certain angle, and he was able to use his compass to measure its angle. I confirmed this by moving the scope, and the results were always the same, showing that this was a solid observation.

According to this observation, the star was at the following position: The latitude is 41 degrees. The longitude is 155 degrees. The star’s position is near the vernal equinox, as we predicted.

Now, to figure out which star this was, we need to consider the stars that appear in the night sky. There are no stars in this position that we can see at night, let alone during the day.

This indicates that we are dealing with a planet. The only planet that was close to this position at the time was Venus.

According to my calculations, the Venus planet was at 24 degrees latitude and 14 degrees longitude in the constellation of Virgo.

This is a confirmation. It’s not a new star, but the familiar Venus, that has been worshipped by the Canaanites, and King Solomon.

But, if you want to be precise, Venus is aligned with two other celestial objects: there’s a trine aspect with the Moon, and a square aspect with Mars.

Here, our astronomers can try to argue that this star was small, and Venus is a large star. However, since Venus was far away from the sun, it appeared to be much smaller, and the sun's rays have dimmed it, making it appear smaller. It is also worth remembering that Venus, like the moon, waxes and wanes in brightness depending on its proximity to the sun.

Therefore, the light of Venus was dimmed, because the sun's light was hitting it directly.

You might also ask why we can't see Venus during the day?

Venus is a planet, or a wanderer in the sky, and it doesn’t appear in the same location all the time. Sometimes, it is behind the sun, hidden from view, or it’s in front of the sun, lost in the sun’s glare. As for the claim that Venus is yellow, but this star was white, well, the moon appears white during the day, but it’s yellow at night. The sun's light is responsible for this color change.

Venus, however, has a fixed path, but this star was constantly moving. And, it appears to be changing direction, but this is just an illusion caused by the fact that this small object is moving quickly, and because our eyes are not designed to see this movement, it appears like it’s moving back and forth.

It is true that ancient astronomers have observed Venus in broad daylight, for example, during the summertime. They have seen Venus shining bright, from morning until two hours after noon, even though the sun was in the meridian. The brightness of Venus could be measured with the quadrant at midday, as well as its distance from the sun. We’ve also seen Venus so close to the sun that in the summertime, it appeared in the morning before the sun rose, and it could be seen for two hours after the sun had set.

But we are not concerned with the natural phenomena, which are constantly happening. We are concerned with events that are beyond the natural order of things. We are also aware that eclipses, for example, are a natural phenomenon, but they are still extraordinary events. And they will occur again, especially during the month of May.

This brings us to the last point: that it is important to not disregard this wonder as a simple natural phenomenon, and we should not attempt to explain it with logic. Instead, we should accept it as a sign of God's power and a warning about the future. I hope that this will be a reminder to all those who are capable of understanding God's greatness.

If you are looking for a sign that God might be angry, you can turn to the ancient prophets, who were well-versed in understanding the signs of the times. They would say that if the sky is clear, God is pleased with us. However, if there is wind, then it could be a sign of war. If there are clouds, then it could mean that animals will perish, and if it snows or rains, then it's a time of trouble.

But, as we said before, we should not only look for signs of God’s wrath, but we should also remember His mercy. He shows His mercy to us in countless ways, and often when we least expect it, He comes to our aid.

So, while we are concerned about the future, we should not forget to hope in God’s mercy. For He is a merciful God, and He will come to our aid when we need Him the most.

Epilogue

As this treatise comes to a close, I have received news from Stuttgart, which tells of the same wonderous sign. This report is quite detailed, so I will share it with you.

The next day, around 2 AM, we saw it again, but it appeared to be more distinct, and then, it disappeared. Today (January 27), we could see this spectacle again through the clouds.

From this, we can conclude that this phenomenon was very distant, because it appears to be the same size in Stuttgart, as it does in Tübingen, which is about 100 miles away to the north.

There is a vast distance between these two locations, and it should have been much larger in Stuttgart, if it were closer.

One more thing to consider is that the arc was moving. It was not stationary, but it was moving toward the east, like the constellation of Bootis.

We can also say, with certainty, that this was not a comet. The comet’s movements are known to be very slow, but this arc was moving rapidly, and it is also unlikely for a comet to be so close to the horizon. So, I cannot conclude that it was a comet.

As I said before, it’s a wondrous spectacle. It’s like the stage of a play where there is much excitement. I, like the rest of the people, also heard the commotion and the noises, and that’s how I realized that this spectacle was real. I was not mistaken. But, this is not a natural phenomenon, for God has brought this about to give us a sign of what is to come.

We can see that the world is in turmoil, and we should be prepared for what is to come. We should be prepared for what is to come.

Remember that, God does not send these wonders to frighten us, but to remind us of His power and to help us prepare for the future. This should be a lesson for all those who are capable of understanding God's greatness.
