  1. POLITOED
  2.
  3. Overview
  4. ########
  5.
  6. -Got back the support movepool it dearly missed in VGC 2014
  7. -Now it makes an overall great support Pokemon that also brings the Rain
  8. -Teams still all know to carry some Grass and Electric-type coverage to deal with Politoed and pals
  9.
  10. Support
  11. ########
  12. name: Support
  13. move 1: Scald
  14. move 2: Icy Wind / Ice Beam
  15. move 3: Helping Hand / Encore / Perish Song
  16. move 4: Protect
  17. ability: Drizzle
  18. item: Sitrus Berry
  19. evs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 76 SpA / 100 SpDef / 4 Spe
  20. nature: Calm
  21.
  22. Moves
  23. ========
  24.
  25. Scald is Politoed's STAB, does solid damage, and lets you fish for a burn
  26. Icy Wind gives Politoed and its partner Speed control
  27. Ice Beam gives you some power over speed control
  28. Helping Hand lets Politoed gives its partner a boost.
  29. Encore lets Politoed punish Protect and other attacks
  30. Perish Song is useful as a win condition if you can get your opponent down to their last two pokémon
  31.
  32. Set Details
  33. ========
  34.
  35. Defense EVs let you live Mega Mawile's Play Rough
  36. Special Attack EVs let you OHKO 4 HP / 0 SpDef Landorus-T with Scald in Rain or Ice Beam outside of Rain
  37. The rest is dumped into Special Defense.
  38. Politoed can use Leftovers over a Sitrus Berry if someone else has the sitrus. Wacan Berry is an option too
  39.
  40. Usage Tips
  41. ========
  42.
  43. People who just start playing often think you need Poltioed + a bunch of rain pokemon. Don't do this.
  44. Don't be over dependent on rain. Think of it more like a helpful boost.
  45. You can challenge CharY's sun with Politoed if it's mega evolved already. If it hasn't, Politoed can't challenge it without a partner faster than Mega Charizard Y with Rain Dance
  46.
  47. Team Options
  48. ========
  49.
  50. Ludicolo is Politoed's go-to partner in crime as it has more useful offensive typing than other swift swimmers such as Kingdra. Ludicolo's Fake Out is also very helpful.
  51. Kingdra is still useful with Politoed, but the lack of Dragon Gem makes it not as powerful as it was in past years of VGC.
  52. Talonflame complements Politoed + Ludicolo pretty well. The three of them are a great core to build around.
  53. Mega Swampert can also work, but you'll need something for Rotom-W
  54. Strong electric-types such as Mega Manectric, Raikou, and Thundurus-T like abusing Politoed's rain to fire off powerful Thunders.
  55. Steel-types like having Rain to get rid of their Fire-type weaknesses. Metagross, Mawile, and especially Ferrothorn love this.
  56. Politoed can't bust througn water or bulky grass types.
  57. If running Perish Song, Mega Gengar and / or Gothitelle are mandatory partners if you want to make a Perish Trap team.
  58.
  59. Choice Scarf
  60. ########
  61. name: Choice Scarf
  62. move 1: Hydro Pump
  63. move 2: Ice Beam
  64. move 3: Scald / Surf
  65. move 4: Hidden Power Grass / Rain Dance / Encore
  66. ability: Drizzle
  67. item: Choice Scarf
  68. evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
  69. nature: Timid
  70.
  71. Moves
  72. ========
  73.
  74. Hydro Pump is your hardest hitting attack
  75. Ice Beam for coverage
  76. Scald for a compromise between power and accuracy
  77. Surf gives you spread, so long as your partner can take it
  78. Hidden Power Grass is for Rotom-W
  79. Rain Dace lets you refresh Rain for the team if Mega Charizard Y mega evolves or switches in
  80. Encore is a fast encore
  81.
  82. Set Details
  83. ========
  84.
  85. Timid with max speed lets you outspeed and OHKO 0 HP Jolly Mega Salamence.
  86. You can outspeed everything up to Base 130 pokemon like the rare Crobat
  87.
  88. Usage Tips
  89. ========
  90.
  91. Don't let this varient of Politoed take too many hits.
  92. Snipe things with Hydro Pump and Ice Beam
  93. Don't make your team overly dependant on Rain
  94.
  95. Team Options
  96. ========
  97.
  98. Ludicolo
  99. Talonflame
  100. Kingdra
  101. Mega Swampert
  102. Ferrothorn, other Steel-types
  103. Mega Manectric, Thundurus(-T)
  104.
  105.
  106. Other Options
  107. ########
  108.
  109. Choice Specs allows Politoed to hit reall hard
  110. Other offensive sets aren't terrible, especially with something with Trick Room. Max Special Attack rain boosted Hydro Pumps hurt, and Politoed also has access to useful coverage moves such as Psychic and Focus Blast.
  111. Hidden Power Grass/Electric gives you coverage against Water-types, but it's weak and only marginally stronger than a resisted rain boosted Scald (120 BP vs 90 BP)
  112. eject button can be used if politoed is only there for rain. helps maintain momentum with free switch ins/can act as a meatsheild.
  113.
  114.
  115. Checks & Counters
  116. ########
  117.
  118. It's important that for whatever check you have for Politoed, keep in mind that it'll have a rain boosted partner to deal with that.
  119. Rotom-W walls Politoed, but have a plan for Ludicolo
  120. Ludicolo walls Politoed as well and some other rain attackers, but have a plan for Talonflame
  121. Powerful electric attacks from Thundurus-I and the like are great against Politoed, but unless they have a natural resistance to water like Rotom-W or Rotom-C, Politoed's Water-type attacks are going to hurt.
