Three's A Charm (ch19)

For Antiqua! This was a really cute idea for a beach chapter, but I took a few liberties with it~ Enjoy!

								Chapter 19.

Due to the recent success of a demonstration the students of Luna Nova had displayed for a group of alumni, the staff at the school had offered a reward field trip day for the student body.

Naturally, for a class of young witches, the winning vote had been unanimous in favor of the beach.

And so several teams of three had been assigned to specific professors, and after everyone had eaten and mounted their brooms that morning, the witches of Luna Nova had taken the leyline to the nearest beach.

Knowing Akko would be a nonstop chatterbox all the ride there, Sucy had opted to ride with Lotte for some peace and quiet, while Diana had done her best to focus on flying as Akko talked her ears off.

When they finally exit the leyline, the witches are met with a truly beautiful sight; bright sunlight, piercing blue skies, fluffy white clouds, a massive yellow sandy beach, and an even more vast expanse of blue-green ocean. There's a collective cry of excitement as they're instructed on where to land, but none louder than Akko, who has started shaking Diana's shoulders enthusiastically.

"Oh my gosh! It's the ocean, the ocean! Diana, look!"

"I can see it perfectly fine, Akko. Please settle down so we don't fall."

"Waaah! I haven't been to the beach in forever! This is gonna be soooo fun!"

Diana manages to bring them down to a safe landing, though she has to grab Akko by the hood so she doesn't go sprinting off immediately.

"Hold on. Do you intend to go dressed like that?"

"Huh? Oh, right!" Akko draws out her wand and casts a familiar spell. "Metamorphie Vestisse!"

The magic twirls around her, exchanging her traditional Luna Nova robes and hat for a much more modern white-and-red polka-dotted bikini, with frills around the bottom like a skirt.

Diana is a bit taken aback by the sudden exposure of so much skin, and her face turns pink.

By then, their classmates have started casting the same spell to change into their swimsuits as well; Hannah and Barbara into matching green and orange bikinis respectively, Constazne into a navy blue one piece, Jasna into a lavender dress-style, Amanda into a surfing suit and shorts, and Lotte into a yellow bikini and skirt.

As for Sucy, who isn't a huge fan of so much direct sunlight, she changes herself into a black frilled bikini and a long skirt that covers down to her ankles, and on her head appears a wide purple sunhat.

Akko, who had been busy observing everyone else's swimwear, gapes when she sees her teammate and girlfriend.

"Uwah! Sucy, you look so good! But what the heck is that?! We're at the beach, you know!"

"Pipe down. It's water-resistant, though I don't plan on getting wet."

"Well, you should! It's the beach!"

"Not interested. If anyone needs me I'll be trying out a new potion." With a wave of her wand, Sucy produces a large black umbrella and a folding chair which she plops down into, then starts rummaging through her bag for potion bottles.

Akko pouts at her.

"C'moooon, Suuuu! Geez, you're hopeless! Lotte, what are you gonna do?"

"Jasna asked for some help with a sand sculpture," Lotte smiles. "I think she wants to make a doughnut and see if the seagulls will come for it. She wants to pet one."

"Hmm, okay that's more beach-like," Akko says approvingly.

Constanze has already started tinkering with Stan-bot and making it dig up masses of sand for Jasna to start sculpting with in between eating from her bag of chips.

Hannah and Barbara have already laid out on their towels to sunbathe. But not a moment later, Amanda runs over to dump a bucket full of water on them. They shriek and jump up to lunge at her.

"Hey!"

"A-Amanda!"

"Hah hah! Suckers!" Amanda sticks her tongue out at them before rushing back into the water and diving straight in. She pops up a moment later with a surfboard transformed from her wand, whooping and hollering as she rides a wave.

Akko grins, then finally turns back to Diana, only to find she's the last student still dressed in her uniform.

"Huh? Diana, c'mon and change already!"

"You really wanna see her in a swimsuit, huh?" Sucy snickers.

"Hey! As if you don't, Su!"

"I guess it'd be nice."

"You know it!" Akko turns back to her other girlfriend with eager eyes. "Go on, Diana! Show us what you had planned!"

Diana blushes, hesitant to draw her wand.

"I haven't exactly been to the beach in quite some time… not since I was much younger with Hannah and Barbara…"

"Really? That long?" Akko blurts. "I come every year! I love it! What about you, Sucy?"

Sucy shrugs from the shade of her umbrella.

"Not a big fan. Think I came once, maybe."

"Once?! Once ever?!"

"Quiet down."

Akko shakes her head.

"You guys, we gotta have a real beach experience today, okay? All of us!" She turns back to Diana expectantly.

Still blushing, Diana heaves a sigh and draws her wand.

"Metamorphie Vestisse."

Both Akko and Sucy lean forward with interest as they watch the glow of magic settle around Diana in a new outfit.

The long robes and boots that had been covering her arms and legs now vanish to show off her pearly-white skin. Her swimsuit of choice is a modest dress style, one that covers her stomach and falls into a skirt at her thighs, the top part of which is light blue and then fades into a darker shade. A fancy, stylish, cute, and very fitting choice for her.

Akko blushes red, and even Sucy turns a bit flushed.

"Whoa…" Akko mutters at first, then raises her voice in adoration. "Waaaoow! Diana, you look sooooo good! Holy crap!"

"A-Akko, please!"

"I'm serious! Hey, everyone! Come look at Diana's swimsuit!"

"Akko!"

Sucy snickers as she watches them banter, then slowly gets up from her chair.

"Akko's right, though. It really suits you. Though with your figure, I think you could show a bit more skin."

"E-Eh?"

"You could definitely pull it off."

"Yeah! Absolutely!"

"You two…"

The three witches blush and smile at one another for a moment. Then, Akko whirls around to face the ocean.

"Welp, I'm gonna jump in! You guys come join me whenever you're ready!" And with that she tears off across the sand and splashes headlong into the water right on top of Amanda, who yelps and throws her off before pouncing on top of her.

Diana sighs and shakes her head.

"That girl…"

"She'll be fine. Probably."

"Sucy…"

"It really does look good on you, though. That swimsuit. I could never pull off something like that."

Diana frowns.

"Sucy, did we not already have this conversation at Halloween? You're perfect as you are. In fact, I rather enjoy your unique sense of style. The dark colors are very becoming on you."

"Think so?"

"Absolutely."

Diana leans in to leave a quick kiss on her cheek. Sucy grunts happily.

They sit together in the shade for a little while, with Sucy adding different textures of sand and various shells into her potion bottle by Diana's recommendation until she gets a result.

In the meantime, Akko can be heard shrieking and laughing and making all sorts of noises as she plays with Amanda and the others, often getting smacked down by waves and tossed ashore.

At one point she and Amanda sneak up on Hannah and Barbara to throw seaweed on them, and the pair jump up screaming as the perpetrators rush back into the water. Diana's teammates exact their revenge with a combined spell that creates a massive wave, which they crash down onto Akko and Amanda to get even.

Lotte, Jasna and Cons finish their giant sand doughnut. The seagulls come for Jasna's chips, and she happily breaks and shares them with the birds until she's befriended an entire flock.

When Sucy is satisfied with her potion, she lets out a sigh, gets up from her chair and offers Diana her hand.

"Well, guess we should humor Akko a bit."

Diana smiles and accepts as Sucy helps her up.

They head to the water together, and the moment Akko sees them coming, she shrieks their names in delight.

"Suuu! Dianaaaa!"

Akko half-swims and half-runs to them, grabbing each of them by the arm before pulling them knee-deep into the water.

"A-Akko, please take it easy," Diana frets.

"Sorry, sorry! I'm just so excited you guys are finally joining the fun!"

"It is kinda nice," Sucy mumbles. "The water's cool."

"I agree."

"You guys don't have to go under if you don't wanna," Akko says. "But you can watch Amanda and me surf!"

So Diana and Sucy do as she suggests to begin with, staying in the shallows with the smaller waves as they browse the sand for shells and crabs.

Amanda whoops and shouts as she does tricks off her surfboard, while Akko body surfs, occasionally transforming herself into a dolphin to swim. She circles her girlfriends in that form and splashes them with her tail, the reverts back to her human shape and swims off giggling.

When they've swam enough, the trio of witches comes back onto the sand together to try sand-sculpting. Sucy uses magic to make a big sand mushroom, and Diana uses the same technique to make a small, functional castle.

But though Akko commends them, she challenges them to make one without magic, and shows them how to sculpt the sand. They opt to help her, and in the end they've created a lopsided, half-collapsed awkward little tower, but they're proud of it, and they decorate it with seaweed and shells to make it even more charming.

When the teachers call everyone for lunch, the witches sit on their towels together and enjoy some fruit drinks and water while some take turns smashing watermelons, the pieces of which are then distributed as snacks for their classmates. Amanda smashes hers so hard the pieces are too small to be edible, but Jasna hits hers just perfectly so that all the slices form beautifully.

After lunch, Diana is struck by inspiration. Being quite skilled with the art of water summonings, she asks Akko and Sucy for assistance.

"With your wands," she directs them. "If you could both just give me a bit of a boost with your magic."

Akko bounces up and down.

"Oh boy, oh boy!"

"Sure." Sucy sounds much calmer, but she's rather curious as well.

Their professors and other classmates stand back on the shore as Diana had asked of them, while she faces the water with Akko and Sucy on either side of her. When Diana gives a nod to show she's ready, the other two begin casting magic and direct it at her wand. Diana breathes in deeply, channeling her powers as she speaks the spell.

"Shurial Muryuelle… creatures with the sacred manes, receive the light from the stars… and come to life from the flowing fountain. Tiphillie Lirullianae!"

A powerful surge of green magic blasts from the tip of her wand, supported by Akko and Sucy's powers. The spell creates a wide arc over the water, encompassing a massive area and several waves all at once. The color fades, green merging with blue, and everyone holds their breath.

Then, a massive, towering wave erupts about a hundred yards out at sea, and an ancient song of whinnying voices rises over the crash of the waves.

From the sea foam emerge dozens of beautiful glowing white unicorns, their bodies pure white and sleek, their manes flowing with water. They rear up and race to the shore together, swimming as effortlessly as if running on flat terrain.

The witches squeal and gasp and smile as the animals race onto the shore and dance among them. Several come to surround Diana, nuzzling her with affection.

Akko's eyes shine as she pets one, and even Sucy is stricken with awe.

When Diana's spell finally wears off, the unicorns trot back into the water and melt away. Everyone cheers and applauds Diana, while Akko picks her clean up off the ground and kisses her.

The remainder of the day is spent cooling off and winding down, until at last it's announced they'll be flying back to school soon.

But before they can change back to their robes and call out their brooms, Akko scrambles to gather Sucy and Diana by the arms and pull them to the water's edge.

"Before we go!" she says. "One last thing!"

"Yes, Akko?"

"What is it?"

Akko whirls around to face them both, then leans in to kiss them each.

"There! A romantic kiss at sunset on the beach!"

Diana blushes and looks down at the water, while Sucy gives a shrug.

"Not exactly romantic… but nice, I guess."

"I agree," Diana says.

The two of them lean in to kiss either of Akko's cheeks as well, and she giggles.

With that, the three of them change back and return to their classmates to mount their brooms and make the flight home.
