Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) is a surgeon saving those caught up in the nightly Chicago shootout. One night, a home invasion gets his wife killed and leaves his daughter in a coma. The police detectives (Dean Norris, Kimberly Elise) have been investigating a series of break-ins in the neighborhood. Kersey finds himself fighting crime as the vigilante Grim Reaper.<br/><br/>The trailer annoyed me to hell. It&#39;s jokey with pumping AC/DC music. It looked horrible from a misguided Eli Roth. The movie turns out to be an ok B-movie. It doesn&#39;t dig that deep into this troubling world. The subject matter provides some interesting potential which is never fully realized. Roth doesn&#39;t have the self-reflection. Bruce Willis may not be the best for the role. He should be a meek every man but the dude is John McClane. The transformation is not that shocking. He keeps on a low key which fits the role but also continues his string of low-energy performances. The daughter does something annoying in the climax. The movie is always on the verge of annoying me but it manages to pull it out in the end.
My kids made me go see this movie, and after watching it I was glad they did. The story different enough to make this one seem very &quot;now&quot;, so comparing this movie to the 1974 original is really not fair to either movie. Bruce Willis is good, Elisabeth Shue is good, the detectives are good. The movie doesn&#39;t run long, is paced well and I liked the action. Movies are supposed to entertain and this one is entertaining.<br/><br/>I remember seeing the original Death Wish in a drive-in. It was good, too. I hope they do a sequel for this one.
As soon as Willis deploys his trademark smirk, and the comfortable vengeance of tracking down his wife’s killers while avoiding detection takes over, it just becomes a million other B-movies about lowlifes getting what they deserve.
