- Homework: handout p. 167/299 - Try to paraphrase the paragraph about vitamin supplements.
- Are you among the millions of Americans who take vitamin supplements? If your answer is “yes”, why do you use them? (1) Many people take multiple vitamin/mineral supplements as an “insurance policy” in case their diets are not nutritionally adequate. (2) Other people use specific vitamin supplements because they think this practice will result in optimal health. (3) Vitamin supplements are effective for treating people with specific vitamin deficiency diseases, metabolic defects that increase vitamin requirements, and a few other medical conditions. (4) However, scientific evidence generally does not support claims that megadoses of vitamins can prevent or treat everything from gray hair to lung cancer.
- ---
- Compare your paraphrase with your partner’s.
- Most people take vitamin tablets in case their diet doesn’t have sufficient nutrition.
- Some people use particular vitamin tablets feeling that they may get good health by taking the tablets.
- Vitamins are effective for people with specific deficiencies, metabolic defects, and a few other conditions, but there isn’t scientific evidence that megadoses of vitamins can prevent other conditions like gray hair and cancer.

- I will bring my umbrella tomorrow if it rains. (I may or may not bring it. It depends on the weather.)
- I will bring my umbrella tomorrow in case it rains. (I will bring it, because it might rain.)
- There isn’t evidence that vitamins can prevent cancer. (Evidence doesn’t say “yes”.)
- (Maybe the evidence is inconclusive. It says “I don’t know.”)
- There is evidence that vitamins cannot prevent cancer. (Evidence says “no”.)

- (The rest of this unit is about speaking and presentation strategies.)
- Are you good at public speaking? Why or why not?
- p. 156/288 - Overcoming Speech Anxiety (or stage fright)
- Before checking the list, what are some strategies you can think of?
- - practice in a mirror
- - practice with a small group of people first
- - get opinions and suggestions from people who have done lots of public speaking before
- Practice, to make sure you won’t forget part of the presentation in the middle.
- Use visuals, to redirect attention and prompt you for the next thing you’ll talk about.
- (If you can), move around during your talk and have water to drink, because both of these things can give you time to pause and think naturally.
