  59. 　　11年前，约翰·迈克尔·麦克唐纳拍摄了自己的处女作，短片《第二死》。在那部短片里有一个叫做盖里的年轻警察。几年之后，麦克唐纳提起笔来为这个小角色创作剧本。后来因为种种杂乱的事情的打扰，这个剧本只写了十页纸。虽然有一个单独的情节，但还不足以被拍成一部短片。是麦克唐纳还是觉得自己应该把这个剧本写完。于是，这个十页的剧本就变成了《坏守卫》，而那个十页的小故事则变成了《坏守卫》开篇时，鲍伊尔在农舍里检查死尸的一个小情节。
  60. 　　对于这个简单的开篇，麦克唐纳非常看重，他说：“这是整部电影的核心，我们就是从这个情节开始整个故事的。我在写作的时候，是按照顺序来写的。如果没有一个好的起点，后面的一切都是空想。我在提笔写这个剧本的时候，并没有想过后面的故事会怎么发展，只是一点点、一点点地慢慢写。等到写到某个情节的时候，故事和人物就自然而然地出现在我的脑子里了。”
  61. 　　虽然麦克唐纳一直说鲍伊尔这个角色并不是为了“疯眼汉”格里森而写的，但是他也坦承，如果不是格里森来扮演这个角色，那么这部电影将完全会是另一个样子。谈及自己出演本片，格里森说：“剧本写得非常好，那些绽放出来的情节让我欲罢不能。很明显，这部电影非常有趣，也很幽默，但同时它还很深刻。从某种意义上说，这是一部从剧情到内涵都非常像西部片的警匪片。这里面有阴谋、有策反还有人们的自我认知。我很喜欢这个故事。”
