» | background; mei lian was born in san francisco to a chinese father and a vietnamese mother. at the age of 10 she soon realized her love for music when she picked up the cello and joined the school orchestra. the family was forced to move to vietnam for a few years causing her to struggle to learn three languages at once, because of their short move there she hasn't been able to fully learn the language. she participated in many music competitions when it came to classical music, but soon wanted to learn more and picked up the guitar. she entered as many competitions she could join and developed as a musician slowly whilst juggling school and a part time job as a cashier at a candy store. when she was about 16 she graduated early in the junior year due to her high grades which allowed the family to move back to south korea so her father can be honorably discharged after a long break. her brother has lived there before they even moved so she was excited to be able to see her brother more. she soon auditioned for jyp when after the decision of taking a year break before starting college. surprisingly she got in and she spent the rest of the time training.
