Manga ending

Rei sacrifices herself and becomes the snow (seriously), and Shinji and Asuka are essentially reincarnated in a new, peaceful world. They have no memories of each other or anything that happened in their previous lives. Shinji meets Kensuke and Asuka very briefly on a train, then part ways with both of them. It basically ends on a hopeful but unsatisfying note of Shinji vowing to take charge of his own life.
