- Purpose
- In this lab, equilibriums will be observed and Le Chatelier's principle tested.
- Methods
- In this lab, four equilibriums will be observed, and products or reactants added to see how their addition changes the balance of the reactions.
- Materials
- In this lab, filter paper, test tubes, distilled water, Fe(NO3)3, KSCN, a graduated cylinder, beakers, Ni(NO3)2, concentrated ammonia, HCl, NaOH, Ca(NO3)2, a ring, a ring stand, guaze pad, a bunsen burner and Co(NO3)2 are used.
- Procedure
- Obtain 3 test tubes and a piece of filter paper.Mark each of the test tubes with an identification number. Add 20mL of distilled water from a graduated cylinder ot a 100mL beaker. Add 20 drops of .1M Fe(NO3)3 and 20 drops of .1M KSCN to the beaker. Add 3 mL of this solution to the three test tubes. Add 20 drops of .1M Fe(NO3)3 to the first test tube, and 20 drops of .1M KSCN to the second test tube. add distilled water to the third test tube and mix all three. compare the colors in the test tubes.
- Add 10 drops of .1M Ni(NO3)2 to a test tube. add concentrated ammonia until the color changes, add HCl until the color changes again
- Using a 10mL graduated cylinder, add 5mL of NaOH to a beaker. Add 5 mL of Ca(NO3)2 to the beaker. Filter the mixture with gravity filtration. wash the filter paper with distilled water. remove the precipitate and suspend in distilled water. Add HCl and record the results. Add NaOH and record the results.
- Set up a ring stand with an iron ring. Place a piece of wire gauze on the ring. Adjust the height so that the wire gauze will be in the hottest part of the flame from a laborotory burner. place a beaker with distilled water on the wire gauze and heat the water to a gentle boil. Add Co(NO3)2 to a test tube. Record the color. Add concentrated HCl. shake the test tube and record the color. Add distilled water. Place the test tube in boiling water and wait for and record the color change. Cool the test tube until the color changes and record the color.
