Ahead we saw a man standing in the shade of a tree, a big fire ax in his hands. His shoulders rose and fell as if with extreme exhaustion.

The man with the fire ax was looking off into the blue nothing and was not aware of Top’s approach. Maybe he was an uninfected person who’d used the ax to defend himself, or maybe he was something else. The ax was smeared with blood and the man’s clothes were spattered. Flies swarmed around him.

The TOC sent the feed from Top’s bodycam to a corner of my visor and I saw what he saw. We all did. We saw the red, torn, inhuman lumps of things glistening wetly in the grass. We saw the body of a child—what had been a child—sprawled in the dirt, her little arms wrapped around a small dog.
