  1. I had only been a few days at Tsavo whenI first
  2. heard that these brutes had been seen in the neigh-
  3. bourhood. Shortly afterwards one or two coolies
  4. mysteriously disappeared, and I was told that they
  5. had been carried off by night from their tents and
  6. devoured by lions. At the time I did not credit

  8. unfortunate men had been the victims of foul play
  9. at the hands of some of their comrades. They
  10. were, as it happened, very good workmen, and had
  11. each saved a fair number of rupees, so I thought it
  12. quite likely that some scoundrels from the gangs
  13. had murdered them for the sake of their money.
  14. This suspicion, however, was very soon dispelled.
