  2. The VLF (VMS Liberation Front) Release History
  3. ==============================================
  4.
  5. A, 2022.08.24, Snapshot.
  6.
  7. 1. File-hosts / Cyber-lockers download resources:
  8.
  9. The cross-platform, open source, Java based, downloading utility, JDownloader, is highly recommended for file-host work:
  10.
  11. https://jdownloader.org
  12.
  13. It cuts through the advertisement annoyances and the CAPTCHA inconveniences of most of the file-hosts, and will also indicate which file-host links are still active, for downloading.
  14.
  15. The MirrorCreator mass-mirror links are from the 25th of August, 2021 communique to comp.os.vms - most of the mirrors are expired, but each has some that are still active and viable - we monitor the cumulative download statistics.
  16.
  17. The (release the!) KrakenFiles links were minted on the 9th of January 2022 and are all currently active.

  56.
  57. You can also use the Tails Security & Anonymity Live Boot CD, to download from the file-hosts, if you particularly mistrustful:
  58.
  59. https://tails.boum.org
  60.
  61. https://rufus.ie/
  62.
  63. Tails and Rufus are as Bing and Bob, Fred and Ginger, Calvin and Hobbes.
  64.
  65. If wrangling and negotiating the HTTP file-host / cyber-locker download resources is not to your liking, then cut your own Gordian Knot with a handy Damoclean Sword and utilise the, no wuss, no fuss, spare and elegant, NNTP resources, that follow.
  66.
  67. 2. The Usenet Binaries Newsgroups download resources:
  68.
  69. https://binsearch.info/?max=250&g=alt.binaries.warez&a=VLF+%3Cvlf%40star.enet.dec.com%3E
  70.
  71. Generate the *.nzb download packages that you require - the VLF recommend downloading them all and salting them all away, for a rainy day, or long VMS winter, or to share with your VMS friends and colleagues.
  72.
  73. You should be able to download any of the releases through the modern Usenet Newsgroup Reader that you have been using to participate in the comp.os.vms colloquy on a weekly, monthly, yearly, or, decades, long, basis; alternatively, the cross-platform, open source, SABnzbd, for Usenet Newsgroup Binaries downloading, is highly recommended:
  74.
  75. https://sabnzbd.org
  76.
  77. General, quality, Usenet technical advice and resources:
  78.
  79. https://greycoder.com
  80.
  81. 3. No, Virginia 'LMFgen.exe' does not contain any virii or malware:
  82.
  83. https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/7585631eb64c1499e1bbad78068eb2577b5438496253366a8d7a51da3caecd8d
  84.
  85. There is no consistent assessment, many false positives, and several major virus vendors concluding that there is nothing that is suspect - however, it is *always* prudent to check any executable, unless the chain of distribution is immaculate, particularly those that operate on Windows systems, where user accounts usually have full system administrator privilege!
  86.
  87. There is no need to run the LMFgen executable, unless you are researching, or experimenting with, the VMS License Management Facility as there is a DCL (Digital Command Language) shell script provided that activates pretty much everything DEC, historically, in terms of VMS and the DEC layered products - you can manually, visually, inspect the DCL script to see that there is nothing suspect, awry, or amiss.
  88.
  89. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_cell
  90.
  91. If you wish to construct a security "Hot Cell" with which to unpack the VLF releases and forensically examine the contents, then we suggest using a virtual machine hypervisor and then installing a disposable instance of Microsoft Windows:
  92.
  93. https://www.virtualbox.org
  94.
  95. https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/
  96.
  97. (Don't forget to download the Oracle (Sun) VirtualBox Guest Additions ISO as well)
  98.
  99. The excellent {Generation2} Microsoft Windows ISO custom mods, work very well, in general, and work very well, indeed, with VirtualBox:
  100.
  101. https://thepiratebay.org/search.php?q=user:generation2
  102.
  103. You will also find the {Generation2} Windows Mods useful for implementing the Stromasys CHARON hardware virtualisers that run on Windows Operating Systems.
  104.
  105. These utilities will be sufficient, at a pinch, for your "Hot Cell" work: 7-Zip (Archiver); Infekt (NFO & DiZ Viewer); MultiCommander or FreeCommander (convenient Dual Pane File managers); Sandboxie (Security Sandbox); Process Hacker (task manager);

  114.
  115. https://sandboxie-plus.com
  116.
  117. https://processhacker.sourceforge.io
  118.
  119. Contrary to the name, 'Infekt' doesn't infect your systems with anything.
  120.
  121. 4. The original LMFGEN was released on the 35th anniversary of VMS, back on 2012.10.25, given that we only had access to VAX/AXP hardware virtualisers that ran on windows, at the time, we decided, out of temporal-situational pragma, to make the LMFGEN executable windows based, only.
  122.
  123. For the 45th anniversary of VMS, upon 2022.10.25, we plan to make amends and do things properly - old school digital - if we are still alive - and to re-release the LMFGEN, re-written and compiled in BLISS - VMS is bliss, after all - and in a manner so that it can be integrated as a DCL Verb on VAX/VMS and AXP/VMS systems, and to supply the BLISS source code, of course. We will also plan to encode the LMFGEN as a DCL script so that anyone can understand and operate it easily, and to also encode it in C for GNU/Linux systems, to supply a LMFGEN executable for such systems.
  124.
  125. By all means, feel welcome to pre-empt us, before the 45th!
  126.
  127. 5. Good luck.
  128.
  129. 6. Semper VAX; Semper AXP, Semper VMS; Semper DEC.
  130.
  131. Thank you for your attention.
  132.
  133. Best regards,
  134.
