Sumin is a girl overflowing with curiosity. It's a good thing because it causes her to learn more things and have more knowledge, but like they say, curiosity kills the cat. Her curiosity sometimes gets her into trouble because she'd do anything to satisfy that curiosity. She's also a very creative girl and has a designated journal for all her theories and stories. Her creativity causes her to do a lot of forms of art, both visual and performing. Sumin also gets excited very easily, and when she's excited she'll become louder and she smile a lot. She trusts people really easily, including strangers because she believes people are good. It caused her to be involved in dangerous situations, like once she almost got scammed of her money, and almost got kidnapped. It was her sister who had to save her and warn her. Because she trusts people really easily, she's really gullible and usually falls for pranks even if she had fallen for the same one before. Sumin is also a bubbly and cheerful girl who smiles and laughs really easily, resulting in her ability to make friends easily.

Hwang Sumin was born in the waters around Taiwan(more specifically, the East China Sea) , which explains why most of the other mermaids there speak Chinese. Sumin on the other hand, spoke Korean with her family and Chinese with others, causing her to be fluent in both languages. Since the east China Sea was right next to the Philippine sea, Sumin had many flilipino friends, and one of them was the eleventh mermaid. They grew up together and did many things together, they were basically best friends. Despite hearing about Korea from her parents, she had never been to Korea until she turned 16. She was curious to find out where she actually came from so her older sister brought her to Korea and since she wasn't interested in going onto land, she waited for Sumin in the waters. Sumin found herself really liking the land so she would visit often, even making some friends but she had to make an excuse, saying she's from overseas and only came to visit.
